Life Saving Measures

One takeaway from the Naloxone presentation is the information about how prevalent overdoses are in BC. How we are likely to see an overdose in our community and how crucial it is that we be prepared and have the knowledge to help potentially save someone’s life. The second takeaway is how to use the product. How to properly open the ampule, and administer the drug to the overdosing individual. The third takeaway is how to acquire Naloxone. That we can go to a pharmacy and pick up a kit free of charge. The impact of this session is very heavy. I now have the knowledge of how to potentially save someone from overdosing, and the knowledge that an overdose is very likely in our community.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. From the evidence provided from the presentation about the prevalence of overdoses, I can make the judgement that it is a large problem in the community. It is good that we better know how to manage it.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Thinking

This project has allowed for me to explore my skills and abilities. Through the process of completing this bag, I have had to modify or make things up to create my finished product. For example, the pattern for the squares did not include the orange border around the star and moon. The star was also not a part of the pattern set. The squares did not come with instructions regarding assembly, so I had to create that as well. Hand stitching the squares together and burying threads was also exceedingly difficult; not because it is hard, but because it took a long time to complete as it is tedious work. Creating the straps was also very difficult. Finding the right length, tension, and width took a very long time, as I had to redo them numerous times.  Though the hardest part by far, was creating the lining. There was no pattern or inspiration for it, I had to do it all myself. I traced the finished outside of the bag onto the fabric for the lining and hoped for the best. The fabric I chose was also difficult to work with. I needed to use a special needle, different tension, and battled the fabric’s aggressive fraying. I decided to create a zippered pocket and French seam around the bag to challenge myself as I had never done them before. Finishing the top edge was very hard as well. The fabric did not want to lay and ironing was not working very well. Hand stitching the lining to the bag wasn’t hard, but it was tedious and meticulous work as I wanted the edges to be as perfect as possible. This project required large amounts of critical thinking, as majority of the project was improvised. I am proud of the finished product and look forward to using it.

The Fish: Poetry in Voice Reflection

My Poem

Curricular Competency Reflection

I chose to focus on the poem “The Fish” by Marianne Moore for a few reasons. The first was the fact that it was over the 25-line minimum outlined in the assignment criteria. The second being, that the contents of the poem intrigued me. I was fascinated by the sense of whimsy the words inspired in me. Not being able to recognize the message upon the initial read, made me curious as to what context lay beneath the words of the poem. The third reason this poem appealed to me was because it seemed easy to memorize, due to the shorter lines and prominent imagery. The class activity that helped me most to memorize and collect the nuance within, was listening to the poem being read by others and tone mapping. By thoroughly going through each line of the poem and analyzing it, it was easier to commit to memory. Although my poem was not fully memorized at the time of my presentation, I did have a greater understanding of its meaning and how it should be delivered. Outside of class, to attempt to memorize the poem, I had a recording of it that I listened to while getting ready in the morning, as an attempt to embed it into my subconscious mind for easier recitation. Completing the paragraph write also helped as it put focus into analyzing the nuances and poetic devices used in the poems, and allowed for a greater understanding of the material.

Core Competency Reflection

I respectfully advocate for my needs by… asking to change poems when I was feeling overwhelmed. I was greatly overworked mentally and physically, so I asked for permission to change my poem to a much more manageable one.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in… When I communicated how I couldn’t find the criteria for this assignment. I sent an email explaining my confusion and was able to resolve it because I asked for help.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I… Take a breath and think through my feelings. Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed, I take a step back, figure out the root of my unease and come up with a plan to remedy it.

Textiles Arts and Crafts Core Competency Self-Assessment

Thinking

My crochet squares effectively display my critical thinking skills. They demonstrate this as I had to modify the patterns. Originally the pattern for the moon and star don’t have the darker oranger boarder. I had to use my critical thinking skills to figure out how to add it on. I added a row of slip stitches in orange around the outside of each shape. The outline, I believe adds cleanliness and more of a detailed and finished look to the project. When I have enough of these squares, I will assemble them into a bag and add straps, then a lining. I hope to continue refining my crochet skills and create more projects in the future.

Pre-Calculus Core Competemcy Self Assessment

Core Competency Reflection

During this semester I demonstrated numerous core competencies. One of those competencies was being able to learn and use math vocabulary. I was able to successfully demonstrate my learning using the proper mathematical terms. I was able to do this both on tests and while helping my peers. This skill helped me better understand concepts and allowed me to demonstrate my knowledge more effectively.

Another competency I was able to demonstrate was the ability to strategically prepare for assessments. By figuring out what study methods work best for me, I was able to achieve grades I am proud of. By reviewing the class notes and doing numerous practice questions, I was able to quickly learn and understand concepts. If i became stuck on a particular concept or question, I would pracrice more problems from that unit untill I hqd a complete understanding. All these methods allowed for me to achive a grade I am happy with.

A different competency I was able to demonstrate was the ability to work collaboratively with others. While doing board work and class. I was able to work well with those in my group and effectively collaberate with eachother to solve problems. This allowed for more success for me in the class as explaining concepts allowed for me to rethink solving stratagies, and having more people availible to ask for help.

Advice For Future Students

My advice for future students would be to study the notes and do more practice questions than you think you need to do. Another piece of advice would be to study more than one day before the test and ask questions when you have them.

Law – Pro Drug Legalization Debate

Debate Artifact

About the Activity

For this project, I was placed in a debate group to argue the benefits of legalizing drugs. I researched the economic benefits of drug legalization and how it can impact our society. I also helped present the main points of our arguments, the rebuttal and the closing statement. By working together and sharing information, we were able to create an effective argument and successfully complete the assignment. I am proud of the work I have completed during this project and am proud of the work completed by the rest of my group.

Core Competency Reflection

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.

I chose this competency because when presenting our debate, I was effectively able to convey my argument to the class and present my rebuttal in a clear and organized manner.

I can work with others to achieve a goal.

I chose this competency because I was able to successfully work with others to complete the project.

I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share.

I chose this competency because I completed my share of the project and assist with others.

I can analyze my own beliefs and consider views that do not fit with them.

I chose this competency because while working on this debate, we researched possible points the opposing team would present and researched possible counter-arguments.

Goal

I can ask open-ended questions to gather information.

My goal is to ask more open-ended questions to gather information. I would like to work on this because I believe it will greatly improve my quality of work by looking into more posible contributing factors to my research. By looking into more questions I have, I can create a more well-developed projects and answer potential questions the reader/listener may have regarding my research.

Transforming Parabolas

Parent Function

My equation

Desmos Graph

Significance of a

Changing variable a affects the form of the parabola. When in my equation, a was changed to -1/3, the parabola became wider. Because -1/3 is a fraction between the values 0 and -1, the parabola becomes wider than the parent function. In my equation, the value of a is also negative. Because it is negative, the parabola opens downward, unlike the parent function which opens upward.

Significance of h

Changing the value of h affects the horizontal shift of the parabola. In my equation, when h became -7, the vertex of the parabola became (7,1). This means it was shifted 7 points to the right along the x-axis from the original placement of the parent vertex which was (0,0). Because the value of h was negative in my equation it was shifted right. However, if the value of h had been positive, the parabola would have shifted to the left.

Significance of k

Changing the variable k affects the vertical shift of the parabola. In my equation, the value of k was 1. Because of this change, the parabola’s vertex became (7,1), which changed the y value from 0 to 1. This caused the parabola’s vertex to shift one point on the graph. Since the value of k in my equation was positive, the parabola’s vertex was shifted upwards.

Self Assessment

When explaining the significance of each of the variables h and k, I represented the same mathematical idea that changing these values results in a location shift of the parabola either vertically or horizontally. While explaining how changing the variables affected the location of the parabola, I was able to use mathematical vocabulary to accurately demonstrate my ideas. By separating the explanations of the variables into segments, I was able to clearly format my ideas in a concise way.

English First Peoples 11 Reflection

My Artifact

I rate the authenticity at a 5. The author is telling a story from a community he is a part of. The author and Matoaka both originate from the Powhatan community. He factually states the historical happenings around the life of Matoaka. He tells of how she was portrayed in the Disney movie, and how different the actual events of the story are. The author tells of the harmful stereotypes used to portray his people and how different it was in actuality. For these reasons, I rate the authenticity of the text to be a 5.

The Real “Pocahontas” Story Text Evaluation

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Through this assignment, I was able to demonstrate the comprehend and connect competencies. By completing this assignment, I learned how to determine whether a text is authentic. By learning this skill, I can now establish whether a text is authentic and written by those who have jurisdiction to tell it. This is important when reading and discussing Indigenous topics as it is pertinent that they are genuine and written by individuals that have first-hand knowledge. It is an important part of reconciliation as hearing requirements and requests from those harmed allows for proper healing.

Core Competency Reflection

By completing this project, I was able to advance my thinking core competency. While reading a website, I can determine whether the text is authentic or not. I can do this by analyzing evidence to make judgements. To determine if it is authentic, first I find whose story is being told. Next, I read and see if the author has the jurisdiction to tell the story. Then, I check if the author is representing their own culture and representing it accurately. By considering all of these factors, I can determine whether the story is authentic and a credible source or not.

Chapter 1 Pre-Calculus 11

When I first attempted this problem, I encountered some difficulties solving it. I found it challenging due to all of the steps involved. The most difficult components of this problem were remembering to foil the brackets, and correctly moving all terms to one side to use the zero product property law. I was frequently making mistakes regarding these steps. To fully understand how to effectively solve this problem, I consulted multiple strategies. I reviewed the notes and asked my peers to help me understand. The most important concepts I needed to remember when completing this problem were to foil terms, use the zero product property and factoring terms. The next time I encounter a problem, I will ask my peers and consult other resources available to me, such as a video tutorial or a teacher.
