Cooking At Home(option#7)

I made eggs Benedict for my family and I. While I making this dish I used touch when I was chopping up the potatoes to go into the pan. I used hearing when the potatoes were sizzling in the pan. I used taste to try the sauce and make sure the the seasoning was good. I used smell when the sauce was finished cooking and being put all together. Finally I used eyesight when placing all of the ingredients together. This tradition started being used for holidays like Christmas morning as a celebration or treat to have. The meaning behind this meal is just eating it together as a family. The best part of this tradition is when we make it on Christmas morning and we all take part in making it and enjoy it together. A challenge i had to overcome was the sauce turning out to be very thin and I overcame this by letting it heat for longer period of time. My greatest success was getting everything ready to be plated. I am most proud of the fact that it turns out so good every time we make it.

Cooking At Home #6 (option#2)

I made chicken noodle soup, with leftover chicken and chicken bones from a previous dinner. I used touch when preparing the chicken into small pieces. I used my eyesight when i was chopping the vegetable into uniform pieces. I used my hearing while the vegetable were simmering in the pot. I used smell when i put the spices into the soup to give it flavor. I used taste when the soup was completed and i got to try it. Yes i used a recipe to make this dish. One thing i would change about this dish was adding less pasta next time. One challenge i had was having enough liquid in the soup because the pasta soaked up a lot of liquid. i overcame this challenge by having to add a lot more liquid to the soup. My greatest success was the flavor of the broth being vert tasty. I am most proud of how the overall soup turned out because it was my first time making it. https://www.averiecooks.com/easy-30-minute-homemade-chicken-noodle-soup/

Cooking at Home #5 (option 1)

I made banana bread for this cooking at home. First i used touch while preparing all of the ingredients and doing the mis en place. Then i used eyesight while mixing the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. I heard the batter being put into the pan and being smoothed out. I then used smell when the banana bread was cooking in the oven. Finally i used taste when the banana bread was finished cooking and i got to try it. I did use a recipe for this dish. If i was going to make this dish again i may add chocolate chips to it. A challenge i had to over come was peeling the bananas because they were frozen and the peel was hard to remove. I overcame this challenge by using a knife to peel the bananas. My greatest success of this dish was the final product because of how good it tasted. I am most proud of the finished product because it was successful. Here is a link to the recipe! https://www.food.com/recipe/best-banana-bread-2886

Buddha Bowls

I made Buddha Bowl with quinoa, chickpeas, spinach, carrots, broccoli, and avocado. My biggest success while making this dish was the finished product and how good it looked and tasted. A challenge i faced was putting the ingredients together in a neat way. I overcame this challenge by going very slowly and carefully when i added each new ingredient. First i used hearing when i was cooking the quinoa. Then touch when i was chopping up the vegetables to go in the bowl. I used smell when the quinoa was finished cooking and ready to be put into the bowl. I used my eyesight when i saw the finished product being put together. Finally i used taste when i ate the delicious Buddha Bowl.

Using what you already have!

I made beef and broccoli with noodles. First I used touch when i was cleaning and chopping up the broccoli. Then I used smell when the meat was cooking in the pan. Next I used hearing when when I was boiling the noodles in the pot. I used my eyesight when i saw the final product all put together. Finally I used taste when I ate the finished meal. For this dish I didn’t use a recipe, I made it up. If I was going to make this dish again I might use a different sauce on the beef. A challenge I had to overcome was making sure that all of the components to the dish would be ready at the same time. I overcame this challenge by waiting until the broccoli was done cooking so that I could put in the noodles to cook. My greatest success in this dish was the finished product because it turned out well. I am most proud of completing this dish all by myself because it is something I’ve never tried to make before.

Building your skills- Tools

For this dish i used a spiralizer. It is used to spiral zucchini and other vegetables. It can also be used to spiral vegetables like sweet potato or beets if that’s what you desire. Some safety concerns that come with tool are by the time you get to the end of the zucchini you could easily cut yourself on the sharp edges so you have to be careful. The proper way to use this tool is spiraling vegetables. If you didn’t have this tool in your kitchen you could use a knife or peeler which would basically have the same purpose. I created zucchini noodles and i shared them with my whole family. I did use a recipe in order to make this dish. If i was going to make this dish again I would make a different sauce to the zucchini noodles, maybe a tomato sauce. A challenge I had to overcome was there was a lot of excess water on the zucchini so i had to overcome this by drying off the noodles so there wasn’t too much liquid in the dish. My greatest success in this dish was preparing the zucchini noodles successfully because it seemed like it would be hard to spiral the noodles. I am most proud of the finished product because it turned out how i wanted it to. here is the link to the recipe I used. https://downshiftology.com/recipes/how-to-make-and-cook-zucchini-noodles-the-most-popular-methods/

Turning leftovers into something new

I made chicken divan. I used leftover chicken from the previous nights dinner which inspired me too make this dish. The first sense I used in this dish was touch when I had to clean and chop up the broccoli. Then I used smell when i shredded up the chicken fro the night before and it smelled so good. Next I used hearing when the boiling water was ready to steam the broccoli in. And then I used my eyesight when i saw the result of the final product. Finally I used taste when the dish was finished and we ate dinner, it was very delicious. I did use a recipe for this dish. If I was able to make this dish again one thing I would change was the seasonings because I found that there wasn’t enough salt or pepper in the dish. One challenge I overcame was when there wasn’t enough sauce to cover the dish, I overcame this by adding more milk to the sauce in order to make it thinner. My greatest success in this dish was putting all the ingredients together to make the final product because it looked good and was successful. I am most proud of the final product of this dish because I have never made it before and it turned out good. Turning Leftovers Into Something New

I made homemade Gnocchi with tomato sauce. This meal was inspired by the leftover potatoes and tomato sauce that was in the refrigerator. The five senses I used during this recipe were first I used touch while combining the flour, egg ,salt, and potatoes, by using my hands rolling the dough into a ball. Next I used my eyesight when I had to roll out the dough into skinny snake like pieces. Then, I heard the Gnocchi being dropped into the boiling water. After the Gnocchi was cooked and had risen to the top of the pot, I placed the Gnocchi in the delicious smelling tomato sauce. Finally, I served the Gnocchi onto a plate and sprinkled Parmesan cheese. It was very tasty. I did not use a specific recipe but I did use my Mom’s previous knowledge from making Gnocchi in the past. If I was going to make this dish again I think I would add cheese to the Gnocchi mixture in order to give more texture to the dish. A challenge I faced during this process was peeling the potatoes since they were cooked it was a lot harder to remove the skin. I overcame this challenge by using a knife instead of a vegetable peeler which seemed to be much easier. My greatest success of this dish would have to be the final product because of the fact this was my first time making this dish and it turned out well. I am most proud of the fact that I completed this dish all by myself.

Reflection

How has our interactions with trench warfare (letters from the trenches & “over the top” simulation) impacted our understanding of Remembrance Day and the contributions that Canadian soldiers made during WWI?

I think that learning about the trenches and WWI and the horrible conditions they were dealing with during that time helped me understand how much the soldiers have sacrificed in order for us to have good healthcare, food, water and so much more. The soldiers gave up their lives and families just so that we could live our lives and have a future, they cared and invested more in their countries than in themselves which is something we should all be so grateful for.

Knife Skills

The omelette lab went pretty well because of how well we worked together and how we helped each other if we were struggling or needed help. Some challenges we had was knowing how long to cook the eggs before putting in the vegetables , but we overcame this by asking for help. For this lab we sliced and diced our vegetables in small pieces but in other recipes they use different knife cuts like chopping, mincing and more. We use a variety of knife cuts when cooking because bigger pieces of food take longer to cook and you don’t want your food to be cooked unevenly. Your knife cuts will affect your final dish because it won’t look as nice if all of your food is cut in different shapes and sizes.
