IDS Inquiry Reflection

My inquiry question is ” How much can I improve in soccer this year? ” more specifically how well I can improve throughout the course of my season. Since I wrote my personal learning plan, my  topic of interest hasn’t really changed, and I’ve always concentrated on strategies to improve my inquiry all around.

My time management for IDS has been okay as I feel I was doing great before winter break but have started to slow down and have been less consistent. During CENT time, I sometimes am working on my inquiry but often have the urge and need to use the time to work on other subjects. I feel my work habits are good but need to lean more into using CENT time for IDS. Although, I do try and make extra time to work on my inquiry project on the weekend when I feel I may need to (30 min-1hr on some weekends).

The typical resources I use for my project are YouTube, specifically my soccer team’s channels where my games are filmed and uploaded for me to review. I also use google to research things like statistics and any info I may wonder about. I’ve additionally found lots of helpful videos from TikTok, like ways to train, and what workouts to do.

I am currently facing the challenge of finding the motivation to follow through with some of the drills and workouts I would like to do. I feel, after winter break, I lost my determination and my mindset is not where it used to be. I think this is because after the end of my first semester, I was drained, and I couldn’t find time and effort to do my inquiry. I think that mindset has carried on since after winter break and I have not been able to get back to where I was in my effort just yet. Although with hard work and consistency, I am confident I can get back to where I was.

I have grown a lot in Core Competencies throughout this inquiry process, mainly in my Personal and Social competency, I have improved myself at soccer and it has shown in my character as well as my individual and team success. I feel I have been a better all-around person and player as the season has progressed. I started to care more and more about how my team performed and have always been looking at the goal “To win provincials.” My team and I both know how important winning is to all of us and I feel that I’ve done my part to make that happen as we have been very successful in the last few weeks especially. I have grown a lot and I’ve improved myself and now I’m feeling a lot better, my team is winning and we’re having fun.

I will share what I’ve been learning/researching in this inquiry by PowerPoint or posterboard, I do believe I am on track to share what I’ve been learning by the end of May to early June.

I may continue working on this inquiry for my Capstone next year, and carry it on to next season because I have seen great results. I may also switch topics but I’m probably going to stick to my interest which is sports.

Curricular Competency Reflection:

This assignment reflected on the land we reside on and many other indigenous communities within BC. I learned a lot about the territory I live on which I felt was really impactful. I feel I really benefited from the concepts of land, and community and how it has affected indigenous communities throughout the years. After visiting all these places and learning about the various groups that the land belongs to it made me realize how fortunate we are to be able to live and grow on the land we have. This project has truly expanded my knowledge of indigenous communities and I am proud of the work I’ve completed.

Core Competency Reflection:

Thinking: During this assignment, I had to share the photos and experiences I went through while being on the traditional lands of many different indigenous communities. I also had to reflect deeply on the stories behind the places I visited and how they are related to the indigenous peoples as well as how the colonization of the land has impacted them.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking. 

The criminal justice system plays a massive role in ensuring that our country’s citizens are kept safe and feel the wellness our justice system intends to bring. Currently, Canada’s criminal justice system is mainly focused on the idea of rehabilitation rather than more severe punitive punishments being handed out. This certainly has both its flaws and upbringings and impacts our nation in numerous ways. Personally, I feel Canada should apply more punitive punishment where it is necessary as I feel it will cause most individuals to really see how poor decisions can lead to major conflicts. I also am keen about this as Canada doesn’t impose the death penalty which is completely fine but with this, I feel they should have strict laws, including harsh punishments to go along with the laws being broken. Therefore inflicting these punitive punishments will show people that their actions can lead to serious faults and it may even lower the crime rate as people who may have gotten away with things in the past will see that there are now more punitive punishments in place.

I can analyze evidence to make judgments. 

Throughout the course, we’ve completed numerous activities, assignments or collaborative group work that involve analyzing and gathering information and creating an opinion-based judgment based on the facts gathered. An example of this would be the Intro to law assignment in which there were many cases in that we had to read and analyze any data, evidence, and other viable information and use it to make judgments like whether the individual was guilty and if so what evidence points to that and why. Based on this, I feel I’ve exemplified that I am capable of using evidence to create ethical judgments that result in a good understanding of the topics being covered.

Graphing A Parabola

Communicating & Representing Assignment:

Blue: My Parabola y= -1/2(x+7)^2 – 4, Red: Original y=x^2

The equation of my parabola in this assignment y= -1/2(x+7)^2 – 4 can be compared and contrasted to the original parabola’s equation of y=x^2 in a network of ways. The image above represents how my parabola is seen in context to a graph as well as how it may contrast visually to a standard parabola equation.

Variables A, H, and K are the variables represented in our equation y=a(x-h)^2 + k, and they are primarily what differentiates the two shown parabolas and what makes them significantly different. In this case, the A is -1/2 and the A is responsible for the width of a parabola and in my example my parabola equation is shown to be wider than the original as it is shifted -0.5 units vertically opposed to 0. Since there is a negative in front of 1/2 it also flips the parabola below 0, making it fall in the downward direction. In addition, my H value which is +7 along the x-axis, is responsible for creating a horizontal shift within my parabola whereas the original is only 0 along the x-axis. In my equation, the +7 resulted in a shift of 7 spaces to the left as the positive sign correlates to the opposite, in this case, a horizontal shift of -7. Finally, the K results in a difference in the vertical shift of the parabola; in this specific instance, my parabola has a shift of -4, whereas the original parabola has a shift of 0. As a result of these shifts, the vertex changes from (0,0) to (-7,-4).

Self Assessment

1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in three different ways? (for example, as a graph, an equation, and in words)

I was able to represent three different mathematical ideas by communicating my overall understanding of the 3 main principles which were the values A, H, and K. These principles were represented through the desmos graph as it showed visual differences between the original equation compared to mine. In addition, it was also represented through my equation as from a visual and critical standpoint it was quite easy to tell that my equation would not result in the same parabola as the original. Finally, I was able to inflict these principles in my paragraph by providing examples of why my graphs features are shown as they are as well as why there is a drastic difference in the two parabolas based upon the three main principles A, H, and K.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

My mathematical vocabulary was represented throughout my explanation by using terms such as vertical and horizontal shift, implementing key parts of a parabola like a vertex and expanding upon it, as well as using appropriate, sensible, and clear language to give the reader a persistent flow.

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

By using proper terms, efficient sentence flow, and distinctive separation between different ideas/questions, I was able to elaborate and share information in a clear, structured, and efficient manner. Overall, this improved the flow of the assignment and made it easier to locate any errors I may have made in addition to producing an excellent presentation.

I tend to easily lose focus when I’m not in a good mood and as a result that can influence my progression within the school day. This year to fix this problem I will fix essential habits like sleep, life-to-school ratio, and especially not trying to overstress myself as well as build anxiety. Another key component to help achieve this goal would be to focus directly on me as sometimes that’s the best thing to do. Some little things I can do to help this goal would be to listen to music and be more independent when in a bad mood as it can help keep me calm and collected in a sense.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by…

I am more than often very open when working with others and am usually quite easy to work with. As a way to show people I really care and value their effort this year I will take bigger steps to ensure they feel valued for the work, they are putting in. I can do this by complimenting them when they achieve something, or even by simply working on something together and helping them accomplish what they need together. So as a result I strongly feel that collaboration with others is necessary to succeed and build strong communication skills.

How have you improved this year in…?

I feel that this year in particular I have to taken a huge step in becoming a more responsible, well-rounded individual as I’ve taken on bigger roles, tried new things, and have been quite successful in reaching things I thought I couldn’t. In contrast, I have found that I have improved significantly in aspects like my life outside of school including soccer, my social life as well as my time management. I believe that my improvements outside of school can make me a better all-around person and I will continue to take the necessary steps in able to succeed.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Skills

Cold War Anthems

This piece of work demonstrates both the ideas of critical and reflective thinking. The main idea of the assignment was to reflect and use critical knowledge based on the song we listened to and write about how it pertains to the Cold War in general. More importantly this had to be done with the use of only the song and our minds as this was a very critical piece of work.

This “assignment” showed and brought out how I can take the ideas of one topic like music and reflect on how it fulfills the idea of critical and reflective thinking. This tested my ability to think majorly as I had to go in depth about things like emotions of the song. Although this task could have been a lot simpler I was able to extend my thinking and reflective more deeply on how I feel about each song along with the fact of its related to the topic of war. I’m the end I was able to come up with a fine and drastic response for each section of the piece of work. My work show how finely and extensively I can expand on my reflective work and shows my eagerness to keep going.

The greatest challenge I faced during this “assignment “ was definitely finding the right emotions that came along with the song. Although many of the songs were quite complex it was hard for me to figure out what I was feeling and it took me a while to really comprehend what I felt. In the end I rose up to this remark and I was able to successfully complete the assignment.

As a whole, I am now confident in my reflective and critical thinking skills along with the variety of other components the piece of work brought to me. I feel these skills are very important to have as at some point in our lives we will most likely need to use these skills again, and for some we may use them everyday.

Explanation / Brief History: Millergrove which was built in 1924 is a small town that is slowly becoming more well known. It is located in the South of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is home to many slaves. The town is lead by a young male named Gideon, the slaves in this town are planning a huge escape through the underground railroad. It’s DUE OR DIE. Will they reach freedom?  

Media Fluency Reflection

A. How was the ease of access in building the town, and what software did you use specifically?

The town was not very hard to make but did get frustrating at times. I would say that formatting everything and figuring out where to place our structures was the hardest part of this project. We used Fortnite to complete the project which I found a lot easier to use than other suggested platforms. I like the aspects of this project a lot as it incorporated gameplay into a school project which I thought was cool.

B. Were you able to apply the skills you learned in the planning stages appropriately to a digital environment?

I would definetly say I was able to as in the beginning it was very hard as we had no idea where to put anything or how to structure our town in general. Once we got the hang of using materials and sources provided it got much easier and soon became very familiar and showed improvement from the planning stages. We incorporated our main ideas and mistakes and used them to our advantages to make our final product.

C. What were the sources you researched that made this an “authentic make-believe” town?

Sources we used were the pictures Ms. Mattson had shown us earlier when talking about parts of the industrial revolution and Lyddie. We also looked at the examples that were shown to us when the project was being explained and the most helpful source was the movie on Harriet Tubman as it showed everything clearly and was easy to understand. Most Concepts were brought upon by the movie and we just incorporated what we got from all sources and pictured it then made our town.

D. Is there other software online that could have done the job better? Explain.

Another software that also could’ve worked well for us was Minecraft as even though it also takes a long time my partner and I are both familiar with how the game work which makes it a lot easier. I feel Minecraft could’ve made it look more realistic but Fortnite did a great job too.
