I know that my digital footprint can have both positive and negative effects, I can see this by how depending on what I post can make people happy or mad. It can strengthen relationships with friends and family and can also hurt relationships. So, the effects depend on who sees what I post and what I post in general.
I make ethical choices when online by, making sure whatever I am posting is not offensive in anyway. Also, I can make sure that I do not post something without a person’s permission if the post is about them or anything personal. I do this as to not make anyone annoyed with me or offended by what I post.
Some ways I work to maintain online relationships are, staying active with messaging my friends or consistently playing a game with a friend. Also, I will call friends and family regularly. This has helped not just maintain relationships but strengthen them.
Elements of the town: wooden wall perimeter, abandoned mine, small lake, factory, mountain, desert
Population: 666
Explanation / Brief History: This town was discovered by European explorer who found a flat plot of land after climbing countless mountains and crossing many deserts. The explorer had a team of about 50 people. They set up camp at the flat plot of land. Later some mappers pass by and ask the people what this town is called. They all look at their boss and he replies, “On-White,” so the mapper writes it down on his map and continues walking. Mapper decided to publish his new map of the area and many people are intrigued by the unusual town. The town gets a lot of attention and people start to build houses there and a bar. Many years pass and the population grew. People have since built a cotton mill factory and are self sustained. The name was later changed to “White-On” because of a slight misunderstanding with a nearby hotel called Off-White.
Media Fluency Reflection
How was the ease of access in building the town, and what software did you use specifically?
I used Minecraft because I’m familiar with this software. Minecraft feeplay game lets me build the town and explore unlimited terrain and choose resources and elements.
Were you able to apply the skills you learned in the planning stages appropriately to a digital environment?
I was able to apply most of the skills learned in the planning stages.
What were the sources you researched that made this an “authentic make-believe” town? I used inspiration from the book Lyddie. I also used my experience building worlds, structures and towns in minecraft . I had a base understanding of the factory towns and how they look and feel from Lyddie.
Is there other software online that could have done the job better? Explain.
I don’t think there is a software better than Minecraft for this project because Minecraft has an endless world so you can go as big as you want.
