The supply and demand project that I have completed in this course has allowed me to effectively demonstrate various core competencies. Successful communication is an integral part of the project. I was able to do so by keeping in mind how others would view my work and make sure that the information came across as informative and understandable. The information that I shared was also communicated through the method of presentation. The infographic format allowed me to communicate ideas and concepts in a way that is easy to understand. The project also helped me to show my creative thinking. Throughout the project, I made sure to use the existing knowledge that I had to expand on it and apply it in other ways. Creative thinking helped me to create and present ideas in an innovative way to make my project fresh. I did so by using the complex ideas and concepts and transforming them into presentable points to use in the project. Also, the ability to make connections to personal and social responsibility is a concept that is intertwined throughout the project. Using the concepts to show how our own decisions and actions affect the economy as well as see how those decisions are affected by others is important material that was discussed. Examining action and reaction relationships between consumers and producers was an idea that I was able to explain. The responsibility that we all have to make our own decisions based on situations that we are in was also an important idea.
Core Competency Reflection
My Artifact
Communication Reflection
I demonstrated the communication core competency because of my ability to convey the story and ideas in the comic strip. I was able to understand the purpose of the message that I was conveying in the story. I was able to use my learning to communicate a story in a comic strip which is a different media of traditional communication. The meaning of the comic strip is well developed because the communication strategies that I have learned in this language class are well expressed in the comic strip. I was able to interpret the language skill set to write a creative story that met all the guidelines when communicating my story. The impact of the story on my audience is well developed because the communication of it is clear and concise because of my enhanced language skill set. As a result of all these factors, the communication core competency is evident in the comic strip project above.

Desert Island Project
Desert Island Artifact
About The Project
For the above project I had to create a government and legal code that details how society will function on a desert island scenario. This project involves creativity to create a legal code as well as the ethical and moral aspects of law.
Core Competency Reflection
Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in how I outlined the system of government and legal code to clear up any confusion and any questions that may be raised against a legal code. I also communicated purposefully when comparing my code to others. I demonstrated the ability to make judgements and decisions in my code which can be seen in the punishments and rights outlined. I made moral and ethical decisions to produce a fair and just code as well as a society that will function smoothly. Also, I develop and weigh my options as demonstrated by the moral aspect of the code. I was able to take both sides of situations to make punishments that were fair but also contribute to society and bring justice to the community. I am willing to explore controversial issues such as justice in order to imagine and work toward change in myself or the world including, the development of society based on the procedures and punishments laid out in legal codes.
Curricular Competency Reflection
I was able to create a government that highlights ethical judgments about controversial decisions, legislation and policy. I was able to consider the ethics and morals of punishments given out to infractions of the law as well as both sides of scenarios to make sure that society continues to move forward and justice is maintained. I was able to create a strong legislation by detailing the procedures and systems that would be followed with the goal of expanding society. I made sure to highlight policy in the project by outlining various rights and freedoms to make sure that society is kept calm and that governments could not be oppressive towards society as a whole or against specific groups.
IDS Inquiry Reflection
My inquiry question is what are the different relationships within nature in North America? My time management is good and I often find other times within the week to work on my project. The resources that have been most helpful are documentaries that show animals in real time. The challenge that I am facing right now is narrowing down the information that I am collecting. One challenge that I have overcome is refining my question to narrow down the scope of my project. The growth of the thinking core competency has been evident in my process. I am able to collect information from different areas and interpret and make inferences based on that knowledge. I am planning to make a web or mind map of the information that I am learning about. I believe that I am on track to have it finished by the deadline. I believe that this project is a good opportunity to continue working on for my capstone next year.
Core Competency Self-Assessment
I demonstrated the thinking core competency in my assignment which had to do with poetry. I demonstrated the critical and reflective thinking section when I analyzed the poem to extract the meaning and effectiveness of the figurative language used throughout. I also made connections with the research and the figurative language. I also used the creative thinking competency when making a new poem from an existing line by synthesizing the meaning of the line into a new idea. In summary, I demonstrated both thinking sections of the core competency to produce this assignment
Core Competency Self-Assessment
Critical and Reflective Thinking
I demonstrated the critical and reflective thinking core competency in the acid-base titration lab. I demonstrated this core competency by analyzing the situation to make sure that we could have accurate results and answers. Specifically, I took the data from the first two trials, which we could not use in the final calculations, to refine and expedite the process when conducting the titration. The strategy that I used was to compare the trials to figure out how much was too much and I was successful in the following two trials and I could use those results for the final calculations. Following the conclusion of the trials, I used the critical thinking strategies to figure out how to use the data to make correct calculations. I used the knowledge that I had gained in the solutions unit to arrive at the final answer and be able to apply the lab to the discussion questions on the back. Finally, I used the critical thinking competency once more when writing my conclusion. When writing my conclusion, I had to infer and use my thinking skills to correctly identify the sources of error and implications of each. I did this by reflecting on the lab process and using my knowledge that I had gained previously. All in all, I demonstrated the thinking core competency fully throughout the acid-base titration lab.
Residential School Survivor Presentation
The residential school survivor presentation given by Shane John and Wesley Scott was a unique experience. It was interesting to see the Shane give his own authentic experience of being in residential schools. In addition, Shane connected his experience in residential schools to how it pertains to his life moving forward as well as valuable lessons that can be extracted. Also, it was interesting to see how the residential schools were connected to him and his family. In relation to the personal and social core competency, the presentation showed the lack of awareness, understanding, and appreciation shown in residential schools. For example, Shane talked about how they were not able to practice their own culture and were punished when they spoke their cultural language. Specifically, Shane related an experience of how a boy was punished for speaking his cultural language and did not return. This is related to positive personal and cultural identity because this ability to shape their identity was taken away from Indigenous children. Additionally, the personal awareness and responsibility aspect ties in to the presentation. This is so because Indigenous children had to endure hard labour and punishments, all while being starved and living in poor conditions. Shane talked about how the abusive conditions spilled over into older Indigenous children reflecting that abuse onto younger children because that is all they know. Furthermore, Shane talked about taking a stand to break the cycle and stop the abuse from being bottled in. This lesson helps illustrate personal awareness and responsibility because it helps us understand that there are consequences to our actions. In conclusion, the residential school survivor presentation was an interesting experience because of the genuine experience and feelings that Shane shared.
Core Competency Goals
Based on the three core competencies, I have set three goals for myself. One goal that I have is to have more creative and insightful ideas. I can achieve this goal by working with my peers to refine and stimulate my thinking, which helps me get new ideas. Another goal that I have is to grow in my teaching skills. I chose this goal because I often find myself understanding material well, but not well enough to teach others about it. One thing that I am doing to work towards this goal is being understanding of the people that I am helping. This helps my work towards my goal because when I am able to put myself in the position of others, I am more equipped to teach new topics to them. The final goal that I have set for myself is to express my learning in more creative ways. This is a good goal because creativity is an aspect that I have to work on and it will further grow my skillset and learning. I can achieve this goal by taking inspiration from new ways to show one’s work, and adapting it to have my own creative spin on my presentation. In conclusion, these three goals will help me grow towards being a more creative and effective teacher.

Creative Thinking
My artifact is an example of the critical thinking core competency because I used my creativity to create a poem for a project. I built upon the example poems that we read in class by using poetic techniques while putting my own creative writing for the poem. I used the five senses to create a vivid picture in the mind of the reader by using imagery. I think that I demonstrated the core competency well because I am proud of the poems that I have made and I got a good score on the project overall.
