7 Generations: A Plains Cree Saga by David A. Robertson

Edwin is on a journey to learn of his family’s history to take control of his life. Along his way, he faces grief, addiction, and courage in the face of despair.

7 Generations contains 4 graphic novels: Stone, Scars, Ends/Begins and The Pact. It explores Plains Cree culture, social customs and political structures and what they came up against with the likes of smallpox and residential schools.

One of the best quotes from the book is “in the end, we define ourselves by the actions we take; how we address the past and look to the future”, which really rang true throughout the whole story. It genuinely tells the tale of accepting one’s past to create a brighter, stronger future.

David Robertson is a national best-selling graphic novelist and writer, who’s work is focused on educating youth about First Nation’s issues. He is a member of the Norway House Cree Nation and lives in Winnipeg.
