English Core Competency

Something that I am proud of from this course is the Poetry Sheets we had done in class. This was an exciting part of the course. We learn how to write different types of poems in different ways then presented it in class. This was very exciting to do with my peers.

This was an representative for my Communication and how I shared my thoughts through poetry. Not only this but among my peers and teacher as well.

Games Written Assignment

1) What strategies did you start with?

Once we formed our group of three we started working right away. Our first game idea didn’t go as to planned so, we started to think of basketball. Our last game was going to be a balloon popping game but it wasn’t approved. That got us thinking and we came up with the game idea called “All Star”. This was the start of our beginning. As we started to build our game we made changes throughout it. We planned as we made our game. We thought of the name of our game towards the end of our building process and what paints/designs we should use to make our game stand out.

2) How did those strategies change?

We were just going to have the game against a wall but we made a cardboard stand instead. Instead of using golf balls to shoot our shots into the cups we brought ping pong balls in instead. That way our game won’t become damaged and no one can get hurt. We also changed our points for each cup. As we kept testing our game we thought about the probability and the different chances people would get. This made us move around the ‘How to play the game’ and ‘point score’ of the game. We also changed the distance form the shooting area and where the game was. We moved the two closer for a better probability of getting the ball into the cup.

3) Were your new strategies successful?

As we made sudden changes we realized our game was really successful. Nothing broke, people understood the game and rules. This made many more people want to come to our game. We guessed that no one wants to play a game that is hard to understand so as we worked on those changes the game became a lot more understanding to our players.

4) Why or why not?

The changes were success because we planned out our games and made changes as we built our game. We also tested out our probability and made some changes from that. This helped to game become less difficult to play yet not easy to play.

5) Were there any patterns you noticed that helped you during play?

As people played we didn’t notice a pattern. When we were testing probability, we also didn’t notice much of a pattern. It really depends on your aim.

6) Are there “rules” you can generalize to someone to do well at the game?
There aren’t much rules to help you do well. More towards your aim. We suggest you throw underhand to get the ball into the smaller cups and overhand to get the bigger cups.

Thai Curry

Making and Sharing Reflection

Share and progress while making to gather feedback. Laying out the step for this Thai Curry was planned out successfully by my peers and I. We had discussed what we would each do when making it and had assigned each group member to make and/or help with the dish. By working together or by following a step by step plan we finished our product with a delicious dish. After we had tasted what we made we talked about the flavours, how does it look like and if we liked it or not; what would we change?

Core Competency Reflection

  1. Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…

Before we begin to cook or bake, we communicate with each other about the steps and what each partner will do while making this recipe. We also communicate clearly when cleaning up. Each person gets assigned a job such a washing dishes or special duties. If one person has nothing to do, they come in and help another group member out. For example dish drying, one person could be drying dishes while another can help put away the dishes.

2. I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…

When I hear them working well together by communicating with each other, helping each other out and equally contributing in cooking or baking. Its also when I see everyone helping out either cooking, baking or cleaning. I can also see this when we are filling out our recipes. There is always someone who needs help filling out their sheet.

3. While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extend understanding by…

Planning every step out before beginning to work. We do this before we cook or bake or before we start cleaning. we can also help build and understand by helping each other out as we work. If someone doesn’t understand something while cooking or baking, we can help each other out by helping them with it. Trying to help them understand and learn.

4. My Goal: If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to…

If there is ever a disagreement we get stuck and we can’t find any ideas to help. Maybe asking the teacher if we can change the recipe a bit so we can contribute both ideas is a way we can help the situation. Myself and other in my group do need to find ways to work on this. I will continue to work on this goal for myself and others. I think I can expand my learning if someone doesn’t agree.

Spanish Reflection

El Artefacto

Core Competency Reflection

  1. I can understand that learning is continuous and my identity will continue to evolve.

I am aware that learning a new language such as Spanish will take me some time to learn. As I continue learning in my Spanish class, I hope to see some great improvement with my ability to read and write in Spanish. So far, I can understand the work we are given in class and hope to continue this. For example, we have done a presentation with a conversation in Spanish. We were told to converse with another student. Not only did this help me improve in the language but also help me get to know my peers.

2. I can find it easy to be party of a group.

I can always discuss with the peers around me. We can always help one another with work. This helps me improve my learning and skills for the class. For example, if I am ever stuck on a question and need help understanding, I can always look around for help to the people next to me.

3. I can reflect on my thinking.

I can reflect on my thinking by checking my work twice before submitting any type of work in. I can also do this by asking questions and reflecting on my answers. If I am doing a test, I can always check it over and reflect on my thinking then. I do this with any type of work to help me understand what I am doing.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Social Awareness and Responsibility

My teacher has assigned the class to create a body biography related to the characters in the novel “Kill A Mockingbird”. My group of four includes Katalina, Lucas, Sabrina and myself. We have picked the Character Atticus from the novel. While doing this project together we have communicated, discussed and evaluated each other. We have all communicated to help each other get things done for the project and we have used communication to learn. For example if we didn’t get enough information to put on our poster, we would go to the novel and discuss what other things we could add to our project to make it better. I feel like working as a group really helps each individual work on our work ethics. Such as communication, socials skills and critical thinking. We could always work on areas we struggle in as well. As for myself I would like to work on critical thinking; thinking outside the box while working as a group.

Favourite Recipe

Eggs Benedict + Scones

Making and Sharing Reflection

My partners and I productively had made this recipe together. We had planned out what we were going to do each step before we started cooking and baking. The process of making the scones were quick and easy considering we had made these once before. We started off discussing our steps and rereading our recipe. When we finally decided what each person will do, we started to gather our materials and began to work. We were great combining the ingredients together and communicating with each other. We had made a mistake in the process, we had forgotten to put the racks in the right place. So, when we had to change the racks, the oven lost some of its heat. In the end, the scones turned out great. Considering we were group of three, we were fast and on time. Two people made the scones, and the other made the hollandaise sauce. In the end we learnt that we could’ve baked the scones longer, it was a bit undercooked but we learnt from our mistakes and now we are aware that we can add more minutes to our baking time. As someone took out the scones from the oven, I set up the tables and got ready to have the scones and egg Benedict with my group member; Zoe. Andrej was part of our group but had to leave half way so instead of six scones we had four. Each person got one egg and two scones. We added the hollandaise sauce on the egg and enjoyed our meal.

My Most Memorable Food Experience

My most memorable food experience is when I when to a café called Le Foret in Burnaby with my two friends. I ordered a Mango Waffle dish. It had waffles as layer one then ice-cream, mango syrup, pistachios and fruit on top. The café was very pleasing, aesthetic and well organized. This experience stands out to me because it was my first time going to a café. Considering this café is new, it was very busy. Although, I did get my order pretty fast. Looking for a place to sit was difficult. This dish smelt delicious and had many flavours to it. It was very sweet but creamy. It had some crunch to it because it had pistachios, which I didn’t find that appealing but other than that it’s the best waffles I’ve ever had.
