Reflection on Core Competency learning in Physics

Displaying IMG_1895.jpg

During textbook exercises on the whiteboard, I showcased core competencies in communication and collaboration. Working in diverse table groups allowed efficient problem-solving through discussions, applying class knowledge effectively. The dynamic table group rotation in physics class fostered continuous communication with various peers. Textbook work served as a valuable review, ensuring the application of correct laws in circuit units. In critical thinking reflections, quiz corrections played a pivotal role, offering insights into our errors and facilitating collaborative learning within diverse groups. The positive impact extended to unit test preparation, utilizing corrections to reinforce understanding. This process of looking back at notes, rectifying mistakes, and ensuring a comprehensive grasp of the unit exemplifies critical thinking skills.

Chemistry Lab 19C – Reflection

The core competency highlighted in this lab, determining the solubility product constant (KSP) of PbI2, is critical and reflective thinking. By employing KSP calculations, we can assess whether each test tube will result in precipitation or not. If the Trial Ion Product (TIP) is greater than KSP, a yellow precipitate forms, observed in test tubes A (first tube from the left) to E (fifth tube from the left). Conversely, test tube F (the sixth tube from the left) does not yield a precipitate since its TIP is less than KSP. These calculations involve critical thinking, allowing us to predict precipitation outcomes without conducting a physical lab.

IDS Inquiry Reflection

My inquiry question, ‘What does it take to start a business?’ remained the same throughout the months of IDS, but its meaning evolved and refined as I gained new insights. I received valuable input from my mentor teacher, friends, business owners, and others, which helped shape my business approach in a more positive light.

To stay organized and track my learning progress, I made it a habit to record calendar events every Wednesday. In case I forgot to write a journal reflection, I could refer back to my calendar to recall the events and experiences of each month. Additionally, I found TED Talks and the wisdom shared by various individuals to be instrumental in my understanding of the business industry. I also encountered challenges, such as obtaining permission for the fundraiser and setting up the sale in school, as I embarked on this project independently without a leadership committee.

Overall, I believe my growth in the core competency of communication has been significant. Many of the new knowledge and insights I gained were a result of effective communication with my mentors and others. For my final project, I plan to present a video that visually showcases my learning journey and the process leading up to the sales. Looking ahead, I hope to incorporate aspects of IDS into my capstone project next year.

Core Competency Self Assessment

During Biology class, we had to distinguish the parts of a real sheep’s heart. This was for our learning about the circulatory system. I reflected in critical and creative thinking for this lab because, real life model was very different from the diagram in textbooks. It involved critical thinking to compare and contrast the picture diagram and the actual model therefore, it applied our in class knowledge towards real life experiences. Improvements were made when the parts we had labeled was wrong, we had to use our notes and description to locate the correct area.

Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Reflection

Reflection

During the presentation of connecting media and psychological disorder, I achieved the communication competency by, exchanging information from others about the different perspective of psychological disorder in different categories. Not only the information was gained, the interaction with others led to receiving feedbacks for a better result. In this team activity, we had to present to a total of two people. The listeners would then write two points they thought was good during the presentation and one feedback of what the presenter could do better.

Social Psychology Monopoly Assignment Reflection

The core competency that was demonstrated while making of the Monopoly Assignment in psychology class was, communication. I can represent my learning and tell how it connects to my experience by taking the lesson I learnt in class and applying it to the project. As well as, learning the vocabularies and examples while completing the assignment. The scenario write-up of this assignment shows how I can represent my learning. Additionally, I can share information about a topic of interest in a clear organized way by showcasing the lesson that we had learn and categorizing them into themes of colours.

Research Assignment Reflection

A core competency that I have demonstrated in terms of the research assignment was collaboration. I worked with a team to achieve a goal. The research project included a survey research, cross correlation table, and a conclusion which was a summery of the result of our statement. The survey question was based on a statement we believed that decreasing the usage of phones in class can increase our success rate for letter grades. Within collaboration with peers, it was efficient as creating the questions were all negotiated and the work was split the work equally.

Acid-Base Titration Lab

.

Curricular Competency Explanation

The purpose of the Acid-Base Titration Lab was to combine an unknown concentration with a known concentration to determine the concentration of the unknown solution. In context, the unknown solution that we had to find was hydrochloric acid (HCl) and the known solution was, sodium hydroxide (NaOH). To find the   unknown concentration, we utilize the titrations data to calculate the molarity of HCl. To determine the end point of the solution, an indicator is added causing to solution to change colour to a light tint of pink. The indicator used was phenolphthalein and when the pink colour remains for 30 seconds, the titrations is completed. Using our 3 best trials, our average volume of NaOH came out to be 14.79mL. Next, we found the moles of our average volume using the known molarity of 0.100M. After, we used a balanced equation to convert our NaOH moles to HCl, which resulted in 0.001479 moles of HCl. Lastly, we divide the volume (0.010L) to get a final concentration of 0.1479M of HCl.

Initial Volume (not shown): 0.15 +/- 0.05mL Final Volume: 15.51 +/- 0.05mL

Core Competency Reflection – Communicate

During this lab, I collaborated with a partner to achieve the result of the unknown solution. We both did our shares, taking turns initiating half drops and setting up our titrations. With trials and errors, my partner and I did a total of 3 trials including our rough trial. We communicated during each trials to get a better result on the next. On our practice trial, we tried to practice our half drops and that resulted in putting too much solution, that came out to be bright pink. Second practice trial, we had more knowledge on when to stop for the final volume. Finally, we started our real trial and this time we not over shoot and the solution turn into a light pink for 30 seconds. Together, we solved our own questions by reflecting on our errors from the past trials.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

I can give, receive and act on feedback to progress in my goals.

In showcasing the lab I had done for Life Science 11, this can show my progress from before and after. Our first microscope lab was a test trial, as we examined a printed out letter ‘e’. I got familiar with microscope soon after and our class started our first live lab with an organism. As expected, the first lab didn’t go as well as the recent ones since, I had many questions on how to draw the organisms from a microscopic view. However, I improved over time with the feedbacks from peers and my teacher and worked on my goals to draw a more efficient organism. The picture above is a recent lab on examining a Hydra. In total we had to draw three different views of the Hydra. Not only have I improved on drawing, also the labelling and calculations of the organism took less time to figure out. As a result, my efficiency and accuracy of the microscopic drawing has advanced compare to the first lab.
