Get Out Writing Goal and Paragraph Assignment-Self Assessment

A main theme of Jordan Peele’s Get Out is slavery, the reoccurring presence of a deer symbolizes the people like Georgina and Walter who are used and seen as trophies. On the way to the house a deer runs in front of Rose’s and Chris’ car while Rose is driving and is heavily injured, looking back at this with the deer symbol in mind, I related it to how Rose lures in innocent black people. In this deer scene Chris approaches the injured deer while Rose tries to stop him, later in the movie when Chris starts suspecting something wrong with the other black people he’s met, Rose attempts to convince him he’s wrong. Another symbol shown through the deer is how they are hunted down, stuffed then used at as trophies; the white people hunt down black people with their desired attributes (attractive, athletic, etc-trophies) stuff the innocent bodies with their brains. Now that we know Walter and Georgina resemble the deer we can look at the last symbolization made with this deer analogy. Walter and Georgina, being the deers, are used to help convince Chris to stay which will cause him to end up like them, his conscious mind killed; this heavily relates to how Chris uses the deer trophy to attack Rose’s father leaving him dead. To hunters deers aren’t seen as more than things they can kill for their own enjoyment and use as décor rather than an actual living being, black people are seen as nothing more than things the white people can control as they see themselves superior to blacks.

Writing goal: I would like to make smoother transitions between the points I make

Curricular Response

I chose my writing goal by thinking back to my old paragraphs and choosing what I would like to improve on. I chose to make my goal using smoother transitions between my main points. I mostly rushed this paragraph so I didn’t have much time to focus on critiquing my paragraph to meet my goal. To meet this goal I can find things that relate to each now my points rather than jumping from topic to topic. I can also find things that are opposite from each point.

Core Competency Self-Assesment

One aspect of my writing that I would like to improve is spending more time further elaborating on each of my points. To do so I could spend more time when planning by making smaller points to my main points. I can also elaborate on the evidence by adding quotations. I can also add opinions and relate it to real life scenarios. I can also make connections.
