My Digital Footprint

Reflection

In the society we live in today, our world revolves around technology. Many people use the internet, but many people don’t realize that every time they post something, they could be leaving behind a digital footprint.

When I searched my name on Google and the few social media websites I use, Instagram and Facebook, there were a few things that surprised me. The first thing that surprised me was when I googled my name. When I googled my name along with my city, a search result popped up. I didn’t expect any results to load, so it shocked me. Thankfully, it was just a transcript of the SunRun participants in the past. Another thing that surprised me was that I was unable to find my Instagram account when I searched it up, unlike when I searched up my name on Facebook. I thought that I would be able to find my Instagram account because my username uses my name, but I did not find my account. However, I did find many accounts of people with the same name as me.

I believe that I have been very cautious with sharing information. Even if you find my accounts on social media, all of my accounts are private and I have not posted any personal information online. When trying to find a job, my digital footprint won’t affect the employer’s decision because the only thing that shows up when you search up my name and city is a SunRun transcript, and all of my accounts are private so that people I am not close with cannot see what I do. I also think that my digital footprint’s effect on my college/university applications won’t be significant because I have been very wary of the things that I post and the comments I make online.
