Social Competency Reflection
My experience with Rochester Elementary so far,
I have worked with children for the first time who are 6-7 years old that are
kindergarten and grade 1.
Our first activity was reading.
My partner was named Tili, she was a shy girl with a soft voice.
I asked her which books to read; and she chose 3 books.
When I was reading, I have observed her behaviour, she looked away and- was not paying attention.
She had that short attention span.
I believed that she got bored after reading the fourth page because
the book wasn’t suitable for her age.
I notice when people feel left out and do this, I approach him/her and encourage to join our activity-
to make sure they feel included. And give them opportunities to participate in group activities
so they won’t feel left out. My values around social interactions with other people includes respecting their feelings and personal boundaries. For example, in foods class, I wait for my team-mates before we start eating together.
Some of my traits/ skills that make me a leader in the area of emotional intelligence include:
I read people’s feelings first before showing my empathy, I can comfort them and show them
I understand how they feel, the way they feel.
I listen to them carefully and ask some questions, I let them know to talk about it freely.
I respect their boundaries when they don’t feel comfortable to share their personal problems.
I can understand their choice and I do not push boundaries to anyone.
I have valuable ideas to share about my experience in Rochester Elementary and do so by
doing fun activities with the child and get to know them, that would boost their social skills
and adapt their important life skills in the future.
