Core Competency Self-Assessment

Titration Lab

Communication CC

I demonstrated my communication skills by working well with my partner in order to complete the lab. This took a long time to complete due to how accurate the measurements have to be to get the lightest shade of pink. My partner and I had assigned jobs of getting the right materials required. We then took turns testing out how to use the pipet and the burrette clamp. Since this lab requires more than one try, this allowed us to be more involved and fully engaged with the experiment. When measuring the HCl, one of us had to hold the pipet while the other will look from an eye level to get as accurate of the measurement as we can. The other one will slowly release the pressure so the the HCl will go down to the 100 ml line. After that, we communicated on how we execute the final part of the lab, which will determine whether we did it accurately. The substance cannot be a bright pink which is why me and my partner made a plan. One of us has to directly observe from an eye level while holding the erlenmeyer flask, while the other has to slowly and carefully twist the little knob so that not too much of the NaOH will be poured out. Overall, it was a very lengthy process but we managed to pull through.

Where I’m From Essay

My Paper:

My writing process:

Due to the time difference between Canada and the Philippines, choosing a suitable time to interview my grandmother was the most difficult part. I sacrificed some of my sleep just to find the right timing, but it is more than worth it. What surprised me was that, I didn’t know more than half the story of what actually happened. It was like opening a present only to discover there was another one inside. The easiest part of this assignment was putting all the information together into one big paragraph and edit from there. I enjoyed talking to my grandma just like the old times and having that feeling of nostalgia. What I didn’t enjoy was writing the last paragraph of my essay. It was hard to relate it to me but in the end I managed to do it. What I learnt from this was nothing I’ve never heard before to be honest. For me, it was just a matter of revisiting and reflecting more thoroughly on all the lessons and advice my grandmother shared with me when I was younger.

Core Competency Reflection

Communication:

The ways I communicate at school differs from how I communicate at ____ (soccer/ work/ hockey/ piano lessons/ family events/etc) in these ways: I speak my native language at home which is Tagalog. I had to translate the entire interview in English to the best of my abilities. It sure was a challenge but it sure was an interesting experience.

Critical and Reflective Thinking:

I used to think that I know how my grandma was like when she was young due to the stories she would tell me growing up and now I know that it was only the surface of it and that I have so much more to learn because I did this interview.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility:

To celebrate an accomplishment such as this assignment, I went ahead and called my grandma again and showed her my good copy. She also told me more stories that I’ve never heard of before which is why I’m glad that we did this assignment.

Communicating:

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include brainstorming how I’m going to put my essay together. I also thought about how I’m going to wrap up the essay and make a connection to myself.

Goal:

A long term goal for myself include me learning as much as I can while at the same time having fun. My plan to achieve that is to take breaks, like watch my favorite book, watch my favorite movie, hang out with my friends, etc.

French 11 Movie Poster

Aladdin: 1992 film

For this poster, my partners and I put together details and information of our favorite animated movie, Aladdin. We worked hard on it especially on our French grammars and spellings. We tried our best in summarizing the movie without having to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t watched it. We utilized collaboration as well as communicating because we all have different ideas that we brainstormed and get feedbacks on how to make it better. The grammar, in my opinion, is the most difficult part because it tests our knowledge. This was an experience that I would be glad to do again in the future as I learnt a lot in this project.

IDS Inquiry Reflection

My Artifact:

  1. What is your Inquiry Question? Has the focus of your inquiry shifted or changed since you wrote your Personal Learning Plan? Explain.

The focus of my Inquiry question changed since I wrote my Personal Learning Plan. My original question was related to my Law class. But then a few months ago I switch focused to youth homelessness in our community and how to help them. It’s a newly formed group under Leadership called “Cent Helping Youth.” And now, my question now is, ”How do I make an impact in my community?”

2. How is your time management? Are you using CENT time weekly to work on your Inquiry, or are you finding other time during the week?

Since the second semester has started, it took a while for me to adjust and so most of the time, I use my CENT time on doing my homework or studying for my other classes. However, I find time during the week through flex time to meet up with my group and discuss how to move forward.

3. What resources (people, websites, apps, videos, etc.) have been most helpful?

The most helpful resources so far was advices of my leadership teachers.

4. What challenges are you currently facing with your Inquiry? What challenges have you overcome?

Challenges would be finding the proper materials needed to execute our ideas. We overcame many challenges so far by having a plan B for most of it.

5. Describe your growth of a Core Competency through this inquiry process.

I used my Personal and Social thinking skills to communicate in my school community. I engage with students and peers directly especially in fundraising events, which is the main point of our plan.

6. How will you share what you have been learning, creating or planning in this Inquiry? Are you on track to share your learning by the end of May or early June?

Cent Helping Youth still have future plans that will last to the end of the school year and I think by early June I will have a completed Powerpoint presentation of my Inquiry plan.

7. Will you continue working on this Inquiry, or parts of it, for your Capstone next year?

I am hoping to continue what Cent Helping Youth has been working on since the beginning of this school year.

Arts and Crafts 11

Personal and Social: I can recognize my strengths and take responsibility for using strategies to focus, manage stress, and accomplish my goals.

Crochet

This project was the most challenging for me to accomplish as I have never done anything like it before. It was stressful at some point, especially the beginning of the project, which for me was the hardest part. Fortunately, I have coping methods on how I handle my stress or frustrations. In order for me to gain back my focus, taking short mental breaks was really helpful. I also manage to accomplished it after watching the Youtube tutorial as well as seeing it demonstrated in person. I paid close attention to the details regarding the correct way to handle the crochet hook and the proper way to hold the crochet thread. I did my best effort into completing the project and learnt a lot throughout the process. Nevertheless, I am certain that I will be able to use this new skill in the future.

Graphing a Parabola

My equation:

My graph:

Green: Original Parabola Black shaded area: Range for original parabola Blue: My Parabola Violet shaded area: range for my parabola

In the Parabola equation vertex form y=a(x−h)2+k, the ‘a’ value which is the coefficient of the equation, determines whether the parabola will be wider or thinner and whether it is facing in up or down direction. For my equation, the -1/4, which is a fraction, made the parabola wider. It also opened downwards because my ‘a’ value is negative.

The ‘h’ value represents the axis of symmetry. x=h It is one of the vertex in the parabola and it determines the horizontal shift (whether it shifts to the left or right of the graph from x=0). For my equation, (x+1)^2 is the x-intercept of the vertex and this tells me that it moves to the left because when ‘h’ is added from x (x + h), the parabola shifts to the left side of the graph.

The ‘k’ value represents the vertical shift of the parabola (how far up or down the graph shifted from y=0). It is also the other number in the vertex which represents the range. In my equation, -4 which is the ‘k’ value, shows that it is the maximum value of the parabola. It shifted 4 units downwards because it is a negative.

The vertex in my equation is shown in the blue parabola, (-1,-4). The vertex of the original equation is (0,0).

Self-Assessment

  1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in three different ways? (for example, as a graph, an equation and in words)

I was able to discuss the significance of the vertex form of a parabola equation and apply it to my own parabola equation. The graph image shows how the two parabolas differ from one another. I incorporated mathematical terms into my short paragraphs as well. To show the parabolas’ maximum and minimum, I included the range in the graph.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

I was able to use words such as maximum value, ‘a’ value, shift, and vertex to explain my parabola.

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

In my graph, I essentially used four different color types—green, black, blue, and violet—to indicate both the original parabola’s range and my own parabola’s range. I ordered my parabola explanation as best I could by going over each step from “a” to “k.”

Brain Disorder Story Assignment Reflection

One of the scenes from my project

It took me some time to plan out the precise event or scenarios that I believed would work best for my idea, which is how I showed creative thinking skills in this project. As a result of the type of situation I wanted to portray, I also had to write my own script. I also considered the colors schemes of the scenarios and made my decisions effectively.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

Should our criminal justice system be more punitive or rehabilitative? Why?

I believe that the criminal justice system in Canada should be both punishing and rehabilitative. Rehabilitative approaches put more of an emphasis on assessing the offender and determining their motives, which enables them to acknowledge their mistakes and seek the assistance they need to change. Punitive means using a stricter method to punish the guilty party. In my opinion, Canada needs both because rehabilitation will help offenders become better people and will increase their willingness to accept punishment because they will understand that what they did cannot be undone.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. I use the knowledge that I learned in law class from cases that had different punishments. Some of the guilty party had been charged with life in prison while some have lesser punishment which is dependent on how serious the crime is. Based on what I’ve learnt so far, there are more punitive punishments than rehabilitative that happens in Canada today.

Research Assignment Reflection

For the research assignment, i demonstrated a few core competencies and those are; collaborating, social awareness and critical and reflective thinking.

Collaborating- i think i demonstrated this the most out of the three because i did my part and worked with my group mates as best as i could by discussing the important parts of our project. I tried my best to communicate and understand with each of my teammates and give my feedbacks as well as receive it from them.

Social awareness- I am kind to others and participated in group discussions. I demonstrated respectful behaviour in the classroom and outside.

Creative thinking- i tried my best to give a creative idea or inputs to my group and i reflect on the feedbacks that i received from them and improved it.

Core Competency Goals

How do you learn best?

I learn best when I write down notes that the teachers provide on teams and having it on paper is easier for me as I prefer it. It also helps me remember little details about the lecture that the teacher did previously. When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I would put my ear buds in and play my favorite songs to calm me down and help me stay on task. Most people probably likes a quiet place in order for them to be able to focus on their studies, but for me, I prefer the opposite.

What do you do when you disagree with someone in your group or discussion? How did you learn/develop that strategy?

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by respectfully asking for their comments and their point of view before stating my disagreement with them and explaining my perspective in a calm manner. This way, both sides will come to a consensus agreement and avoided a potential argument. For me, this way of communicating is best because both sides get to learn something new.

What helps you get new ideas?

When it seems the good ideas just won’t come to me, I would read a book that I think would be relevant to my task. Of course there are a lot of other ways to get new ideas from, but I have two favorite things to do and one of them I just mentioned. The second is to share it with my friends and family and express an idea I had but wasn’t satisfied with in order to get their constructive criticism that I can use to improve. To help calm myself or create space in my mind to absorb this new ideas, I would quickly write down notes so that I can easily finish the task at hand.
