What’s the Word Around Town- Red Deer

  1. Was I able to identify how the geography impacts the town/city with ease? How was I able to find how the physical geography impacted these communities? I had to spend a lot of time researching how the Red Deer River, and Red Deer River Valey, were formed by the melting of the glaciers at the end of the last ice age. This research was important to my understanding of how the physical geography impacts the city of Red Deer, because I now understand why there is good soil in the area for growing crops. It also helped me to understand why farming communities need to be located near a source of fresh water such as the Red Deer River. I learned that the resources that many cities rely on today to provide jobs and food for the people of a region, are the result of how the physical geography of the area was impacted by things that happened thousands, or even millions of years ago.
  2. How did I build my project from a backwards design? Was I able to dream of the future and identify solutions through that process? I built my project from a backwards design model by identifying the types of crops and resources that exist near Red Deer, Alberta, and then researching why the area around Red Deer has fertile soil for growing crops, and is located near large oil deposits. The soil and oil deposits are natural resources which are the result of how the ice age impacted the region.
  3. Were you satisfied with the result of your design and solutions? I was very satisfied with the outcome of my project; not only because I feel like I clearly described my knowledge, but also because I did more work than was needed.
  4. How would you refine your assignment in the future? I would refine my assignment in the future by spending an equal amount of time on the different sub-topics within the project. I realized that I spent more time on the geography portion of my assignment than the rest.
