Core competency reflection

Collaboration Prompt

If the group is not getting things done, we can have a time to brainstorm in order to get things moving in the right direction. This means we focus on new ideas in an organized way, making sure everyone gets a chance to share.

Creative Thinking Prompt

When it seems the good ideas just won’t come to me, I put myself in a creative or inspirational activity, such as listening to music or reading a book, to help myself create space in my mind to invite fresh perspectives and imaginative thoughts.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility Prompt

When I am sad, angry, or frustrated, engaging in physical activities help me calm down. I practice this by going to the gym or doing a home work out. Working out allows me to transition my negative thought into positive thoughts. Once I am done, I can regain control over my emotions and focus on my awaiting tasks.

A goal I have for myself to move forward

I would like to make an effort to improve including my voice and perspective in group discussions. I will start by building confidence in expressing my thoughts. I will practice this by sharing to a smaller group to overcome my fear of public speaking. Slowly I will be able to speak my thought to a larger group and participate in group discussions.

Lab 20C Titration Lab

Titration is a laboratory technique used to determine the concentration of a substance in a solution. We use a concentration of a known solution to determine the concentration of the unknown solution.

We titrate the hydrochloric acid solution with unknown concentration, with sodium hydroxide.

The endpoint is when the solution has a light pink color. This indicates the acidity level has reached it’s endpoint and the titration reaction is completed.

Our result was that it took an average of 10.85ml +-2.8% of NaOH to completely titrate 10.00ml of HCl. The moles of NaOH were 1.09×10^-3 mol +-2.8%. Which gave us a concentration of HCl of 0.109M +-2.8%.

Me and my partner communicated well and helped each other when one did not understand something. We helped each other to make sure we have the correct equipment, solutions, material and calculations. We were not entirely sure of what to do but were always willing to help one another. The overall lab took a long time but was enjoyable. Me and my partner supported each other well and completed the lab efficiently.

My Parabola

This is the equation of my parabola, which looks like this. It is a quadratic function that has been transformed from the basic form (parental function) below.

The parent function of a parabola is this and looks like so. It opens upwards forming a U shaped curve with a vertex at it’s origin (0,0). The axis of symmetry is the y-axis. x=0.

Blue= y= x^2 Red= y= -2(x+7)^2 -2

My function (Red) is written in vertex form, which is y=a(xh)^2+k, where (h, k) is the vertex of the parabola and my h,k values are (-7,-2). The a value of my parabola is -2. My parabola opens downwards and is shifted to the left by 7 units and downward by 2 units. The x-intercepts and y-intercept can be determined by solving the equation for x=0 and y=0. This function is more complex with transformations that include a downward opening, a vertical compression, and horizontal and vertical shifts.

The parental function (Blue) has no horizontal or vertical translation. h=0, k=0. The graph intersects the x-axis at (0,0) and the y-axis at (0,0). It is a basic quadratic function with no transformations.

Self Assessment

  1. I represented the idea of parabola by using Desmos and giving a graphical representation, and symbolic notation by showing equations of the parabolas.
  2. The mathematical vocabulary i used are x-intercepts and y-intercepts the points at which a line intersects the y-axis and x-axis. Vertical compression, meaning making the y-value smaller for any given value of x. Horizontal and Vertical shifts, Horizontal shift is a movement of a graph along the x-axis and a Vertical shift is a movement of a graph along the y-axis.
  3. I formatted my information by introducing my parabola and the equation first, then showing the parental parabola and equation. I them gave explanation of what each of the parabola represents and the differences.

Facing a Challenge

A problem i found challenging is Dividing Radical expressions. This is one question i struggled solving from making a simple mistake from the rules of exponents.

This is the answer i got my first attempt on solving this expression. These are the steps i did:

  1. Finding the common index for 2 and 5, the LCM for 2 and 5 is 10.
  2. Express both radicals with the same index. I did that by multiplying 5 to the numerator and 2 to the denominator.
  3. Perform the division. I divided the exponents using the laws of exponents.

When i realized my answer was incorrect, i looked up the question on the internet and identified my mistake. The mistake i made was when multiplying the exponents inside the radical. I added the exponents instead of multiplying. I didn’t apply the laws of exponents properly. I applied am × an = am+n instead of (am)= amn.

I applied the correct law (am)= amn, and solved the problem correctly like so.

Addition of exponents only apply if the exponent base are the same. The next time i encounter a problem like this, i will be cautious of the different exponent rules and apply it correctly.

Calculations

3 year 4.2% non-redeemable GIC

  1. 80,000 x 1.042 = 83360
  2. 83,360 x 1.042 = 86,861.12
  3. 86,861.12 x 1.042 = 90,509.29
  4. 3rd year of GIC = 90,509.29
  5. 3 years total savings = 30,000 (10,000+10,000+10,000)
  6. 90,509.29 + 30,000 = 120,509.29

Grand Total = 120,509.29

Core Competency Reflection

Reflection ( Collaboration and Contribution )

I missed a few classes, so I couldn’t participate with my partner much in this assignment. She did an amazing job without me and helped me a lot with the work I missed. I think I helped with doing some of the calculations, and also help my partner understand some of the concepts of this project when she needed help. There was a part where we struggled, and we did not hesitate to ask for help and understand the confusing parts. I would rate my collaboration abilities a 2/4, because I missed a few classes and wasn’t able to participate in this activity fully.

Justification

We did not use the 1 year annual GIC because if we did, we wouldn’t have been able to reach our final goal of 120,000. We did not invest in stocks because we did not want to take the risk of losing money. Our final decision was to stick with the 3 year 4.2% non-redeemable GIC because our calculations proved that this would make us reach our goal of 120,000 in 3 years. Turns out it did!

Button Classifying (Dichotomous Key)

I communicated with my partner on how we could classify the different categories of buttons. I demonstrated this by proposing ideas by observing and spotting the small differences among the variety of buttons and grouping them together. Some of our opinions on which buttons are related didn’t always match, so at first, we grouped those separately, then later on found more similarities to classify, and we both agreed on the classification. We also got feedback from out teacher to help complete our unique dichotomous key.

Workplace math 10 games day

The game we played on games day every Friday was UNO. I didn’t know the rules of UNO at first, but by playing and watching others play, slowly made me understand the rules.

My strategy at the beginning for winning uno was saving the changing colours cards till the end so I can put it down in any circumstances. This strategy helped me be the winner in many of the games I’ve played, so I stuck with this strategy and made myself a winner!

The other strategy i used was saving the 2+ 4+ cards till the end. these cards make people pick up cards on their turn and by putting this down as my last card, not only will I win, it also gives people lower chances to discard all their cards first with the remaining people in the game.

Physics Minecraft Energy Transfer Project

How effectively did your group work?

Our group put all of our ideas and thoughts together to complete this project. Our teamwork was great, except some times when we were missing a team member that lead us to handing in our project a little late.

Were the behaviors of any of your team members particularly valuable or detrimental to the team?

One of our team members often didn’t show up to class which made it a struggle for us. They had the Minecraft world on their laptop, and we weren’t able to access it without them with us. Although the times they showed up, they worked hard and did a great job completing the project and sticking to their part.

What did you learn about working in a group from this project that you will carry into your next group experience?

Our group was hard working and passionate when we were on task, and we all used all our teammates thoughts into the projects. I would like to take on these attitudes on to my next groupwork, because it was a comfortable and accepting atmosphere.

Communication

Our group was successful communicating. We interacted with each other and came up with ideas to put into this project. We also had group meetings and worked on this project outside of class to be more successful.

Thinking

During this project, we did the thinking together to come up with the sources we will build, and the different types of energy that were used.

CPR Reflection

My Artifact

Core Competency Reflection

What was something you learned that you didn’t know or consider before?

In this unit I learned how to perform the proper steps of CPR, and how to react and handle a emergency situation.

What is a key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit?

One of the skills this unit taught is the way to perform CPR to an Infant. I have to perform CPR with two fingers because the they are small, have soft bones and is easier to reach the heart.

How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously?

Nutrition and the diet you are on affects the condition of your body. Not getting enough could weaken your body and causes health problems that could lead to heart attacks, and strokes.

Meal Planning Assignment

Problem

Our problem is that we don’t have have a meal plan that includes everyone in the family it make meals through out the week.

Solution

Our solution was to make a meal plan for who cooks, what we eat, how much they’ll make and when they’ll eat.

This is the meal plan for the week.

MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday
Who will cook?Parent AParent BTeen 1Parent AParent A &
Teen 2
What recipe?Ginger Glazed Salmon Vegetable Pad ThaiChicken noodle soupBlackbean TacosSpaghetti and Meatballs
How many servings
will they cook?
They will cook the whole recipe as there are only 4 servings, 1 serving per person. All of it because it is easy to make and has a lot of servings, and with the 2 leftovers the parents will take to work for their lunch.It makes 6 servings and with the 2 extra servings teen A and teen B are going to take it to school the next day for lunch.Keep all the portions the same because it makes exactly 4 servings. They will cook half of the dinner because the whole meal makes 8 servings so if we cut the ingredients in half, we will get our 4 servings enough for the family.
What time will
dinner be?
Dinner will be at 5:30 when parent B gets home.5:30 is when dinner is.Dinner is going to be at 6pm because everyone is home after 5:30 letting them have a nice family dinner that is not rushed  5:20-5:40 because parent B gets home at 5:30.Dinner is going to be 5:45 15 minutes after parent B gets home.

Justification

I believe our plan will be successful because we calculated the time it takes to cook and prepare the food in order for the family to eat at the same time, and the recipe’s aren’t very challenging or takes too long time to cook.

Collaboration Reflection

  • Our group communicated during class and shared information through a group chat we formed for this project.
  • We used a laptop, which we are very familiar with because we use it often in school for projects like this one.
  • We each did our parts we were assigned to do and when any one of us were struggling, we were kind to help them with what they need.
  • I completed and made a plan for my day which is Wednesday, and mostly participated during class with other groupmates.
