What you did well and how you can improve your Japanese study habits

During Japanese Intro 11, I studied Japanese using the given material and worksheets. I think that my work on the group assignments was the place where I did most well at. There are tons of ways I could and could’ve improved my studying, I want to use school time more effectively to prevent last-minute work that I’ll just mindlessly complete but I also want to be able to endure being okay with sacrificing my own time for school. Feeling like I owe myself entertainment after doing something for X amount of hours is a bad habit of mine because I’ll always start procrastinating and leave work for another time.

I appreciate feedback on grammar and I’d prefer it be written or said to me clearly.

When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I ask classmates and my teacher to advance the development of my ideas.

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is grammar particles and when to use them, I have an okay understanding of how and when to use them but when it comes to more complex and longer sentences I want to better learn how to properly use them.

How will you continue your Japanese language acquisition over the year?

I want to continue progressing my skill in Japanese in my own time and hopefully take Japanese 12 next year before I transfer.

If you could travel back in time, what study/language advice would you give yourself or others? (min 2 sentences)

My past self definitely wouldn’t take any school advice, but in the future, if I ever choose to continue studying Japanese or another language I would prioritize reading in that language.

R4 – School Life

Schools in Japan are extremely different in comparison to western schools. For beginners, the teachers are the ones to move around classes instead of the students, I could never imagine staying in the same class for most of the day with the teachers being the ones who move between classes. Although that makes sense if the school is smaller. Another thing is that middle schools and high schools in Japan are much stricter. Schools in Japan have very strict rules on uniforms, behavior, and even hair, whereas school students in Canada have more freedom when it comes to how they want to live. I would look fire in a school outfit but the negatives outweigh the positives because I wouldn’t be able to wear baggy pants anymore (huge negative).

One thing I wish we did at Centennial is more variety for clubs, but some things are limited due to teachers, accessibility, funding, and location. Japan high schools also have a wide selection of clubs such as tea, swimming, softball, tennis, table tennis, baseball, art, manga, and broadcasting/news. The clubs are well-populated as well so you wouldn’t have trouble meeting a lot of people with similar interests. Personally, I still wouldn’t join any but it’s good to provide students with opportunities to try new activities.

I would be insane atじゃんけん, those elementary kids wouldn’t stand a chance.

R3 – Japanese Mascots

http://wandertokyo.com/fukkachan/

Fukkachan is a mascot from Fukaya city in the Saitama Prefecture. When I searched for Japanese mascots, Fukkachan caught my attention immediately. Fukkachan’s design is very colorful and I just love its design. I believe Fukkachan is popular because of its unique design and cuteness.

One big difference between the mascots in Japan and the mascots in Canada are the animals themselves and the designs. In Canada, we often see beaver, moose, and bear mascots that wear clothes such as shirts and jerseys. The mascots in Japan arrange from all different types of animals, objects, plants, creatures, food, etc. They tend to be more colorful, bold, and creative than Canadian mascots. We see how entertainment and culture differentiate between countries, and we also see how lame and uncanny western mascots are.

I think mascots in Japan are bigger than in Canada because they are heavily promoted and their uniqueness and cultural connections make them popular among people. There are many unique mascots that you can find whereas the mascots aren’t really that distinctive in Canada.

This is the mascot for Coquitlam that I chose to create. I decided on this because it’s always raining here like I’m tired of looking on the weather app and seeing a ‘Rainfall Warning’ that lasts weeks…

For my Yokai, I chose the Tsukumogami. I decided on the Tsukumogami because they’re inanimate objects which become self-aware and alive after 100 years of existence. Tsukumogami are everyday objects that are possessed by spirits that come after 100 years of the item’s existence. The Tsukumogami could be evil and cause chaos but it could also live faithfully. To prevent evil spirits from occupying objects, people would discard items before they reached 100 years old, this tradition was called “susu-harai”.

Japanese Yokai and Western creatures aren’t that different from each other, Yokais and Western creatures both exist as folklore and are pretty similar in terms of popularity and belief. I personally do not believe in Yokais, monsters, or ghosts. I really believed in them when I was young and would get so scared when anything weird happened, my sister is currently in the same phase and it’s funny watching her freak out when I tease spirits and ghosts. I do not believe in monsters but will still be anxious and afraid during horror movies, I will never voluntarily watch a horror movie by myself…

Why Japanese

Inspiration

I was inspired to learn Japanese because of some Japanese artists and sculptors, I also find Japanese culture and the language itself interesting. I’ve always wanted to learn new languages proficiently but never found the time to. I chose Intro Japanese 11 as an elective so I could learn Japanese from a teacher and ask questions.

Goal

My goal during Japanese 11 is to learn the basics of Japanese along with sentence structure so I can understand conversations in Japanese. I also want to be able to understand Japanese media including books, manga, anime, and artwork.

Motivation

In other language courses, I never found a “spark” in learning language. It always felt like a chore to study everyday to learn words and sentence structures. For Japanese 11 I will work towards achieving better habits than my previous classes. I will achieve this by finding time to studying, asking questions, and practicing.

R1 – うらない

I haven’t been judged because of my horoscope of blood type before. I feel like generalizing someone based on their horoscope or blood type and determining their worth solely off that can be upsetting to the person. You have no control of either traits and to be treated differently is discriminatory. It’s unhealthy to let a social label tell you how you’re “supposed” to act and have control over your personality and values. Although I do not believe in horoscopes or blood types determining yourself, I do think some personality tests could somewhat describe what type of person you are if you answer truthfully.

I believe these fortunes are still widespread and popular as of today because of superstitions, cultural traditions, generational teaching, and social norms. I personally don’t believe in superstitions but a Hindu superstition my mother told me about is that seeing one crow is deemed misfortune but seeing two crows is an omen for success.

I always think to myself that I would be dead already if monsters or ghosts existed because I’ll be mocking and teasing them to do something and nothing ever happens. Maybe one day my teasing will catch up to me and I’ll mysteriously pass away or disappear.

Artifact: Game of interview Jenga

In familiar situations, I cooperate with others for specific purposes.

During one of our classes we played a game of Jenga where we had to answer an interview question for each piece we took out. I was put into a group with three other people in my class, we all took turns taking out a piece and answering questions. We were able to share our answers to each other and communicate clearly, no one was being uncooperative and we all respectfully listened to what each person had to say.

My brochure for my CLE Career Report unit project

We created a brochure using our research of the careers we found interesting. We researched many parts and aspects of our careers including compatibility, outlook, workplace, skills, salary, and education. After we completed our brochures, we were tasked with presenting our brochure to a small group of people. When you weren’t presenting you listened to your group member’s presentations and gave them feedback at the end, I listened to my group members and gave them feedback in a respectful manner. I learned how to research information on possible future careers and I created a brochure based on my thorough research.
