Reflecting on English Studies 12

My Artefact; Happiness Podcast

Curricular Competency Reflection

When coming up with a script for my podcast, I had to make sure it was entertaining for an audience. I wanted the script to come from heart and share my own experiences with happiness. I’m proud of how much I wrote and honestly could have kept talking about it because I choose something of interest. I learned a lot about happiness through the resources I used and connecting it to my own experiences.

Core Competency Reflection

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in my podcast. I used evidence from an article we read in class to further talk about happiness.

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are making sure its something people would want to hear and not doing into deep detail without it being boring or irrelevant.

Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Mind Map Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. I can analyze the song I chose and its lyrics to discuss how it relates to depression.

I consider more than one way to proceed in an investigation. It is possible for the song to have other lyrics that resonate with another mental health disorder. Or the lyrics i’ve chosen can also be symptoms or signs of another mental health disorder.

I can tell the difference between facts and opinions. The written symptoms of depression are facts which can be found in the psychology text book. Reading and analyzing the song and giving my personal opinion with background knowledge to help express ideas on depression within the song.

I Saw a Perfect Tree Today : Poetry in Voice Reflection

My Poem

Curricular Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the poem I chose to Recite. This poem has a deep connection with how trees and nature are being destroyed and future generations wont be able to see much of the natural world.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is tone mapping with other people from my class. I got to hear how they would read my poem to help choose a tone to read it in.

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are learning different tones and how to find them in a poem. I’ve got to practice finding tone and mood in class which prepared me for reciting my poem.

Ceramics Character

I am willing to explore controversial issues such as global warming in order to image and work towards change in myself or the world. My piece is about how pollution is effecting the nature. He is sitting slouched Infront of a factory were I believe lots of pollution issues start at. He is sad or worried about how the effects of climate change can change him and the world around him.

Cheek Lab Self Assessment

Thinking CC

I can deliberately learn about things that interest me, and new ideas pop into my head. The cheek cell lab indulged me in learning about micro biology and seeing my physical cheek cell under a microscope. Human biology interests me and being able to see my real cell is fascinating. When filling out the last question, ” what are some things that you are curious about after doing this lab or learning about cells in general?” an idea that popped into my head was, do cell carry on functions outside of the human body? and how long does it take for a cell to die outside of the body?

Personal CC

I can understand how my values shape my choices. I value trying my best and working hard for a good outcome. For the cheek cell lab I attempted my best drawing for the cheek cell. I made sure the drawing was as accurate as it could be. I labelled the cell best to my knowledge. Because one of my values is to get a good outcome, i make sure to hand in my assignment on time to get the best grade possible as well to keep myself caught up for this course.

Research Assignment Reflection

In communication and collaboration I chose, “I encourage others to share their voices and value diverse perspectives” as my core competency. This is because my group and I made a survey for students to see if distractions decrease class engagement. We encouraged students to answer our questions to their fullest truth. I respect all of the diverse answers shared in the survey to make a final conclusion with my group.

Inductive/Deductive Reasoning in Mastermind

Today I played the game Mastermind. To play this game you use colors and a sequence to try and break the 4 color code. There are 8 different colors to chose from and the code is 4 colors long. There’s also have a maximum amount of try’s. On the side of each try there is a red, white or blank dot. Red means you have a right color in the right spot. White means right color wrong spot. Blank means wrong color. A strategy I used was to put random colors and try to find the colors that weren’t in it so I could eliminate them first. This game is deductive reasoning because you have to use the side colors for information to know what move to do next.

Comparative Cultures Mid-Term Assessment

Inquiry

My group and I worked together to research information on Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt’s large scale infrastructure and compare the two. We spend a few days searching the internet for information and details we could use in comparing the two. We also made a hand build Pyramid and Ziggurat to show the difference between the two structures. By the end of our project, my group and I were able to understand the differences between both architectural structures as well and learn more information and Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Core Competency’s

Creative thinking took place when my group and I build a ziggurat and a Pyramid. I know a Pyramid looks easy, but it takes some skill and effort to be able to cut out 4 identical walls and hold them perfectly to glue. An extra piece we added on to the pyramid so looked less boring is that you are able to open up the pyramid to see inside. Inside was a replica of what a real pyramid looked liked. I think being able to see inside the pyramid was a part of creative thinking because we came up with a good way to make our piece more interesting and understandable.

Core Competencies

In my Spanish conversation, I built on my collaboration skills. My group and I worked together to write out and create our own dialogue in Spanish with 6 transitional phrases and 3 idioms. Together we decided who was speaking and when, who would say what, how we would move the conversation to hit all 4 chapters and how we would present to the class. I equally collaborated and made decisions for the group as well as letting other decide. I am quite proud of the score we got as it shows our hard work and effort.
