Life Saving Measures

The three take aways that stuck with me was:

I learned many things I did not know before that will help me be more aware and cautious of people around me. The first thing I learned is that the first push in CPR is the hardest push because you have to break the persons ribs to be able to compress on the lungs. I also learned that with the Good Samaritan Act people can help the unconscious person and not be charged with anything if something goes wrong. The Good Samaritan Act helps to get more people involved if they see a person unconscious because they are protected. I also learned about opioid use and how the drug naloxone is used to help those who are overdosing. Furthermore, I found that there are many consequences to substance abuse which can damage your body and make you do irrational things. Another thing I learned is that different ways of ingesting drugs have different levels of effects like if you inject drugs into your bloodstream the effect will be more severe due to the substance going right into your bloodstream unlike taking an oral substance because it will have to go through the entire body before it gets to the bloodstream, so the effects are not as severe. In Conclusion, I learned many new things that I did not know before that will impact my views and actions in everyday life.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. I believe in a quick situation, I could act fast to potentionally save someone’s life.

The Crucible Essay

To truly understand characters in the Crucible and their motivations for behavior, one must analyze Kolberg’s moral precepts for explanation and understanding. There are three moral precepts that each individual will evolve to. In this essay, we will talk about how each character relates to either pre-conventional, conventional, or post-conventional behavior. People are not set in a certain behavior; they are able to flow between them with the major decisions they make. Each character is unique in their own way and has different motivations for different reasons.

To begin, there are many examples within the play that illustrate a preconventional individual. These characters behave in such a manner to avoid punishment and obtain rewards. With this in mind, Tituba is a great example of a preconventional character.  She shows this trait when she confesses to a crime she did not commit because Reverend Parris told her she would get taken out and “[whipped] to [her] death.” Because Tituba was afraid, she did not want to stand up for herself. She confessed a lie to ultimately avoid death. Thomas Putnam is a character who is one for his own reward. He proves this behavior as he is frustrated and “sick of meetings.” These meetings are not mandatory; however, Putnam is heavily concerned about his own priorities and financial well-being. Lastly, Betty is a character to avoid punishment. She demonstrates this personality characteristic when she denies waking up after Abigail aggressively tries awakening her by saying “Betty wake up, Betty!” If Betty were to wake up, then she would have gotten a beating from Abigail. Betty, trying to avoid punishment, perceived to be asleep in hopes that Abigail would think she did not overhear her conversation with John Proctor. Therefore, making Betty a pre-conventional character.

On the other hand, there are many conventional characters in the play. These characters behave in a way to fit into a group no matter the circumstance. For this purpose, Cheever is an excellent example of a conventional character. He showcase’s his conventional behavior as he will always “do as [he’s] told.” Cheever is responsible for carrying out arrests during the witch trials. He embodies typical conventional traits as he follows the rules and does his duties without questioning the higher authorities. Another example of a character who wants group acceptance is Reverend Parris. He displays this behavior when he influences the towns people to “speak nothing of witchcraft.” Rev. Parris wants to discourage witchcraft in the community to protect his reputation from potentially getting damaged. He feels that spreading witchcraft rumors will cause chaos and violence which will reflect poorly on his image. Our last example is Mary Warren. Mary Warren wants to fit into the crowd of girls. She follows the crowd of girls while they are accusing people of being possessed by spirits when she cries out as well “spirits, spirits” when she does not necessarily know why she is doing this. Because she wants to fit in with the other girls, she does what they are doing even if it is not the right thing to do. This is a clear indication of a conventional character who has a desire to fit in and go along with the beliefs of the community or a group.

Lastly, there are many examples within the play that illustrate post-conventional characters. These characters are the most complex in that they behave in a way that they stand for their internal value system, without regard to punishment, reward or group acceptance. John Hale is a perfect example of post-conventional character. He proves this behavior as he will “quit [the] court” because he does not believe in the righteousness of the courts system. He stands for what he believes is the correct thing to do regardless of losing his well-earned job as a member of the court. He believed that supporting the court is not beneficial to his religion and it reflects negatively on well-being. Additionally, John Proctor is another character who believes strongly in his internal values. He shows this when he “will hang” if he does not give his confessions to the court. He believes he is a bad man, and he knows the best way to save his name is to accept fate and be hanged. Even though the consequence is death, his personal integrity and moral courage is enough to overcome that punishment. Lastly, Elizabeth Proctor is another example. She demonstrates her post-conventional behavior as she wants her husband to live, however, she “cannot judge” his decisions. She knows that letting him pass away to something he is passionate about is greater than him being a husband to her.

In conclusion, understanding Kollberg’s moral precepts helps you get a stronger understanding of the characters of the Crucible and their motivations that influenced them to do the actions they did. Knowing whether they are pre-conventional, conventional, or post-conventional helps identify the cause and effect of the situation in the play.

Biology 12 Diffusion lab Core Competency Self Assessment

Communication and Critical Thinking

I chose to do my core competency self assessment on my diffusion lab. Throughout this lab I had to use my communication and critical thinking skills to be successful. My partner and I had excellent communication skills as we had to do multiple steps together to get the best results. Communication was a key factor in many of these steps. For example, one person had to have steady hands holding the cell, while the other person had to work around their hands to tie a knot around the cell. I believe weak communication would lead to a disaster in a lab like this.

In addition, critical thinking skills were greatly needed to be successful in this lab as-well. We only had one question to ask Ms. Chew, so we had to think around things on our own and use that question wisely. We had to make educated hypothesis’s on what would happen and had to describe in detail what happened. We analyzed our data, made educated assumptions with the knowledge we learned by using our critical thinking skills.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication

I used my communication skills numerous times throughout this acid-base titrations lab. My partner and I had to come in agreement with measurement, ways to approach doing about this lab, and talking with one and another about which roles we were doing. My partner and I did well on this lab and I think it came down to how great our communication was throughout it. Communication kept us on task and getting ahead of other groups. I noticed groups that fell behind lacked communication with their lab partner.

Where I’m From Essay

My Paper

Where I am From Essay

Imagine you are 9 years old; your father is a part of the famous Buffalo Bill Wild West show, and he tells you “We are moving to Saskatchewan.” Everything you knew and did in life would have a dramatic change, practically a reset. No more travelling, meeting new people, and most importantly, no more living life to the fullest. This is the story about my great grandfather Roy Murray’s journey through his life.

Roy Murray grew up in a wealthy society, but his family did not exactly earn as much as you would think while being a part of the Buffalo Wild West show. His father was a sharpshooter during his time in the show. “His good friends were the Indians and he really enjoyed them being a part of the show.” He was friends with Indigenous people from two tribes that did not get along. Both tribes were interested in the show, and he wanted both to be together, but the Indigenous people could not come to terms. The show went on travelling across the United States and parts of Europe for decades before coming to an end. They had plenty of fun being a part of the Wild West Shows, but they needed a sustainable place to live along with a sustainable income.

At the time Saskatchewan was offering free land to claim if you took care of the land and grew crops or raised livestock on it. Saskatchewan was doing this because they were trying to grow their province. My Great grandfather was living in South Dakota prior to coming to Saskatchewan, so It was not too difficult to move places. They followed the main rivers upstream until they reached Saskatchewan. Roy Murray’s father was 25 years older than his mom, so unfortunately, he passed away only a few years into living in Saskatchewan. They did not have much money, his mom worked extremely hard providing for them. My pop said to me “My father needed a well-paying job, so he applied for the army. He then got placed to guard the Pacific Ocean along the Coast of British Columbia.”

Roy Murray served in the army for several years before retiring to become a prison guard for sixteen years. As a prison guard he won the sharpshooter contest sixteen years consecutively. “He must have taken those skills from his father,” who was a sharpshooter for the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. He loved how beautiful British Columbia is and wanted to grow a family here. He married my great grandma who came from a wealthy background native to British Columbia, and they settled in Surrey. They had seven boys all within ten years of age, the second oldest being my pops.

My great grandfather went from travelling the world at an early age to becoming poor to building himself and family back up. He lived in several places, met many people, built his reputation, and lived a long enjoyable life. Now, his father has a museum in South Dakota featuring a section all about my great grandfather Roy Murray.

The Writing Process

I throughly enjoyed the process of writing this essay about my family. I learned so much interesting facts, that I would have never known if I did not do this interview. The main challenge I found was the struggle to plan an interview with my grandpa because he is a very busy man. Once I finished the interview it wasn’t a problem writing the essay; everything came smoothly. Something that really caught my attention was that my great great grandpa was a part of the Buffalo Bill Wild West show. I did not know anything about it. Because I did not know anything about it, it made me want to research about this show.

Core Competency Reflection

I show that I value feedback from others in my group by taking their feedback into consideration and incorporating it into my essay.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include listening and asking questions to my piers.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by reflecting on what they have said and contributing it into my writing. As well as to showing them what I’ve done.

I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when I was not thrilled with someones idea but I gave it a try.

Communication: A goal of mine is to work on my communication skills. This would benefit my tremendously, because by talking to more people it opens ideas up, and everyone sees things differently, so it could boost my writing skills

French 11 Movie Poster

Ryan and I choose to do this project on the movie Cars. We did a short description of a few of the main characters as well as a summary on the movie. I had a fun time working with my partner creating a poster board. I used many of the core competency skills throughout this project such as communication, collaboration and creative thinking. I used communication skills by planning out who is going to do what with my partner. Creative thinking skills were used to organize our poster in a unique fashion. Overall, I learned a lot from this project and I enjoyed doing it.

Life Saving Measures

The three take aways that taught me the most was:

  1. To think quick on situations
  2. I learned how many people are overdosing and how dangerous it is. I did not know it was as high as 7 people a day.
  3. I learned the precautions towards preforming CPR to someone in need of it.

I Think these learning about the Naloxone and CPR presentation is an important thing to know as well as an important skill to have. The more people that know about these topics, the less people we will have in danger.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements too maximum my learning experience. I analyzed what the instructor taught us for CPR, and I practiced it on a doll.

Tanner H

IDS Inquiry Reflection

My inquiry question is ‘How I can become a better lacrosse player’. I’ve stuck with the same question since the beginning of this course. It’s been hard to find time to work on this project because I’m in several challenging academic classes. I’ve mostly used my cent time for homework and extra study time. The time I have had to work on this project I’ve worked really hard to do well on it and I’m continuing to do so. I’ve overcome having limited help and instructions towards this project. My plan is to create a powerpoint presentation to present in the end of may. I believe that’s the best way I can show my learning process. I think the core competency that represents my learning the best is the “personal/ social” core competency because I feel like this has been a very personal project where its on me to complete every with little to no help or direction.

Huberman Lab Podcast

  1. I tend to be more interoceptive. I think I am this way because when I tried to sit down and meditate I kept getting distracted by my own thoughts and I found it challenging to focus on my breathing and things you would during while meditation.
  2. I think the most beneficial type of meditation for myself would be a focused meditation where I try my best to block out all my personal thoughts and focus on breathing and practises like that.
  3. I think the type of breathing that would be best for me during a meditation is a type of breathing where you really have to concentrate and focus. Andrew Huberman mentioned a type called box breathing where you control the pattern you breath. For example, inhale, inhale and then exhale. I think that would be best for me and it would help me focus better throughout a meditation.
  4. Andrew Huberman mentioned that before you go into a mediation you should have planned if you want to come out of it more calm or more alert. He said that to help calm you down you should focus on the exhale part of breathing. I think a type of breathing that would help calm you down would be a type where you really focus on the exhale part of your breath, maybe a shorter inhale with a longer exhale, things like that would help you calm down the best.

Physical Geography Core Competency Self-Assessment

project MOVE4MANA

Collaboration

Our group used our collaboration skills well throughout completing this project. We worked together on finding relevant information as to why move4mana should support Sierra Leone. We split up the work so that all of us had a sub-topic to find information on. Finally, we worked together to make a presentation to share to the class. I think we worked well together as a group because we got along and had no problems along the way. I think we could improve our collaboration skills by changing the way we approached this project. Instead of working on sections individually, we could worked on each section together one by one. This would benefit us because we would all know the information more accurately.

Communication

We used our communication skills many times throughout this project. We communicated well to each other when we were figuring out who was going to do which section and who would talk to the class about each section. We had no problems communicating to each other. We also used our communication skills when presenting to the class about our topic. I think we could have done a better job as to getting more of the classes attention by making our presentation more entertaining. That is something that there is a lot of room for improvement that I can work towards to be better at.

sierra leone.pptx – Link to our PowerPoint Presentation

Ethical Judgement

I think we did a great job on the social, environmental, and economic aspects of our project. I think we did well explaining the social and environmental problems occurring in Sierra Leone, we could have done better in the economic part but overall those three categories we fully understood and I thought explained well. I think we could have done better as to incorporating the political aspect into our project. We could have added more information about Sierra Leone’s current and past government position and experiences. We could have also added more information on Sierra Leone’s relationship with its neighbouring countries and how that may affect or support them. Overall, I think we did a good job on our project, we convinced the class that our country was in the most need for support. I would grade it a high proficient mark.
