The Writing Process

When my teacher introduced this project to us, I immediately thought of who I’d interview. My dad instantly popped into my head. The questions that I formulated for him were curated around this one topic that I was hoping to learn about, as my knowledge surrounding the subject in our family was little to none. As I made them, it felt less interesting and I decided to make the questions broader, to receive what I felt would be a better answer. Once I had the questions ready. I procrastinated for a long time before deciding to finally interview my dad. Once I was done interviewing my dad, I realized how much history my family has alongside how talented we are. It was also slightly saddening to hear the answer my dad gave, as he felt that his life may have been incredibly different had he been given the choice to stay in the Philippines. My dad was incredibly willing to share stories with me, which made the project a breeze. When it came to translating what my dad had said onto paper was probably the biggest challenge because I didn’t really know where to start. Once I was able to grasp where I was going to start, it was a lot easier from there. After I had written about 90% of my essay, I came to a realization that I did the essay wrong. (Or what I thought was wrong) So I had to rewrite certain sections. This was a huge blockage in my will to work on this project but I handed in a pretty decent product in the end. This whole project was excellent experience as it helped me dive into history and qualities about my family that I didn’t even know about.

Core Competency Reflection

Others find my feedback useful because I… When we wrote our essay drafts, we were required to peer-edit two other drafts. My desk mates liked my feedback as I didn’t hold back and tried to be as critical as possible. This had me giving as much feedback as possible so that they could create an essay to the best of their efforts.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is… When my dad told his story and the story of my grandparents, I fuelled my mind with images of what or how I believe that situation went. This included using what I knew of these people or events to create a scenario akin to a reel of images of important events.

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are… A huge skill that I developed while doing this project would be my interview skills. This allowed me to flesh them out and had me generating followup questions on the spot to prod my dad for more details, which contributed to an easier work-load.

As an active listener, I notice that I … Always give eye contact, alongside giving an auditory response to allow the person to know that I’m giving full attention. Asking questions also allows me to stay engaged within the conversation, interview, or presentation.

Core Competency Goal

I currently believe that I should work on my Personal Awareness and Responsibility as that seems to be the CC that I lack knowledge/ability in the most. Whenever I make an Edublog it’s my most neglected CC. I hope to reward myself for doing extensive pieces of work rather than neglecting these needs to keep myself focused and not drained. Creating proper goals for myself and a set schedule would also be of great use.

Life Sciences 11 Core Competency Self-Assesment: Communication

This is a dichotomous button activity that we did in the beginning of the year. This displayed communication in two areas. My partner Harrison and I were able to communicate our ideas to each other and separate the world allowing us to finish the assignment within two work blocks. We were also able to communicate to Ms. Chew our thought process on the assignment and our understanding of classifying different “organisms” or buttons. This was an interesting way to start of the year, but it was an enjoyable assignment. A skill I gained was collaborating with peers as my communication skills haven’t been great the past two years. I hope to be able to grow in communicating my understanding/knowledge of a subject to the teacher.

Spanish 10 Core Competency Self-Assesment

Core-Competency: Communication (Communicating and Collaborating)

This was one of our most recent partner scripts that we did. Even though there were some mistakes, overall we did very well. This relates to the sub-competency of communicating as my partner is significantly more knowledgeable in Spanish than I am, so I tend to ask questions on meanings to best refresh my mind. While my partner is knowledgeable in Spanish, his grammar can be a bit questionable. Through this we both communicate ideas while also refreshing/learning new things about the Spanish language. In short, he makes the basis of the scripts then I follow along and fix errors like accents or grammatically wrong sentences. Sometimes I also have to simplify sentences as this is only grade 10 Spanish and his ideas are too grand for our grade. A lot of our communication is also collaboration and without these two aspects our script wouldn’t be as good as it was. Now that I think of it, our partnership benefits each other quite well.

Japanese Internment Paragraph

Japanese Internment camps are a positive change for Canada, though some may counter this with how we’re violating their rights. We must focus on the majority over the minority, as currently the majority are fearful of the Japanese. Canadians will feel safer, and this may also protect the Japanese Canadians from the more fearful folk who may take matters into their own hands if something isn’t done. 

Personally, I don’t hate the Japanese Canadians, but the stories of we hear on the heinous crimes that the Japanese soldiers have committed. It certainly justifies the fear that some of us Canadians may feel towards the Japanese Canadians. Sure, they may not be the same, but you never know if there are some loyal nationalists amongst them feeding the Japanese military information. If they were to be put in camps it’d ease everyone’s minds knowing they’re all in one place being watched. We can all get a good rest. 

The second problem we face is that not everyone is so open minded towards the Japanese Canadians. I previously mentioned some Canadians taking matters into their own hands, but it’s another fear that I personally have for the Japanese Canadians. So, they’d be safer in these camps with each other, away from those driven mad from fear as they may harm our fellow man. My father told me stories of the internment camps that the government put German and Austro-Hungarians into during the previous Great War. So, there’s not as much of a difference if we were to do it again for everyone’s safety. If we were to sell their possessions, we could use the money to further support the war effort and end this conflict quicker so everyone can return to their normal lives. It’s better than them getting destroyed, vandalised, or stolen during the Japanese’s time in the internment camps. 

Curricular/Core-Competencies Reflection

I made an ethical judgement about the action of internment the Japanese-Canadians in my paragraph. 

I did assess and explained the justification for different views of Japanese-Canadian internment in my research handout and paragraph.   

I did assess, understood and explained the significance of the threat of the Japanese army and its treatment of people it conquered, in British Columbia, in my research handout and paragraph. 

I did ask and respond to questions to be an active and supportive listener.

I now understand and can appreciate diverse perspectives on issues and can resolve problems effectively and responsibly.   

I can now understand and tell, after examining the facts of the possible threat from Japanese-Canadians in Canada and the opinions of various people, the difference between fact and opinion.

Communication: Collaboration In a Group Script

This was the first script that I’d created for my Spanish 10 class. My group consisted of two others, someone I have been friends with for the past five years, and a classmate who I just got to know. But when creating our script it allowed us to all get a view on where we each stand in our knowledge of Spanish. Even though we were at different levels of our knowledge, we all contributed a fair share of info/ideas to create a fun script that we were proud of. I didn’t agree with everything, as some ideas were a bit “outlandish”. I was able to improve my social/collaboration skills by working with someone I hardly knew, but we got along quite well while at the same time realising that I played a bit of a passive role, which I probably have to brush up on and improve my “leadership” skills again. I hadn’t done a group thing in a while. But seeing as we’re writing this in the present and this was the past, I think I’m gaining my leadership skills back.

CPR Reflection and Core Competencies

CPR Reflection

What was something that you learned that you didn’t know or consider before?: Something I hadn’t considered before beginning my training on CPR was how easy it is to retain the information that might help one day save someones life. Going into this I thought CPR was something that required months of training to get right and learn, but within a week I’m confident of my skills going into both the written and practical test.

What is a takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit?: A huge takeaway is that I can now know the information in order to save someones life if CPR is required. My dad isn’t the healthiest person, so if worst comes to worst he has a heart attack I now know how to recognise and react to him having a heart attack.

How does this unit connect to the previously discussed nutrition unit?: A connection would be the beginning of the 4 R’s, risk. Many of the risks for a heart attack involved diet and lifestyle choices. Diets high in cholesterol were more susceptible to heart attacks. In the nutrition unit we learned the benefits to a balanced diet, and CPR showed us how to save someone who might not be on a balanced diet.

Self Assessment Of Core Competencies

I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share: For this whenever we did partner scenarios, I always took initiative and even put in a bit to much into my acting. I did my part and sometimes a bit too much.

I persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning behaviour: I’ve taken learning CPR very seriously and have left very little room to fool around. I’ve filled out two different review manuals to make sure I’ve studied to the best of my ability. I will even ask for a third if I’m allowed.

I am kind to others, and support others when they need it: While doing the drills, I never made fun of someone if they did something wrong or forgot to do a step. I’d remind them, give them tips or show them an example on proper hand techniques.

I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals: As previously mentioned, I give feedback to my peers but I’m not perfect myself. I’ve been in a situation where I forget a small step, but a small step might contribute to something larger, which in the case of CPR can mean life or death. I’ve done my best to retain as much information as possible to make sure I pass the practical and written tests.

I find it easy to be part of a group: I have a bit of trouble when it comes to working in a group for CPR. I “hog” a bit of chest compressions, which results in me wearing myself out. When instead I could do 2 sets of 30 then swap out with a partner and repeat that process. This is something I’m hoping to improve upon. A way for me to improve upon this would be to remember to not wear myself out, because if I wear myself out I’m basically useless.
