In this final performance of our concert, I am immensely proud of my perseverance and determination not to give up, even when making mistakes. I made a conscious effort to look up most of the time during most of the pieces to ensure I wasn’t rushing or slowing down. Although I rushed in “Fanfare for the Third Planet,” I made sure to look up more often afterward to maintain a steadier pace. I squeaked during “Highland Legend” due to nervousness, but I didn’t let that bring me down; I continued to play confidently afterward. Overall, despite making a few mistakes in this concert, I persevered and succeeded. This reflection applies not just to this concert but to all my past performances. I aim to improve my nervousness and stress in future concerts. Although I always know my part, seeing so many people watching often makes me tense up and make mistakes. I hope to be less nervous and stressed and more confident in myself in future performances. I was particularly nervous for this concert since it was our last one of the year, which caused me to tense up, squeak, and make a few mistakes. However, I persevered and quickly recovered from my mistakes. I wish I had paid more attention to my tone, as my nervousness caused my embouchure to tighten, resulting in a poorer tone and occasional squeaks. Despite this, I am proud of myself for trying to look up and keep in time. This past year in concert band has been eventful, filled not only with playing fun songs but also with learning more about the technical aspects of making a piece sound better. For example, we focused a lot on dynamics, phrasing, and articulation—three major aspects that significantly enhance a piece when used properly. In middle school, we didn’t focus much on these techniques, concentrating more on playing the correct notes. Therefore, learning about dynamics and phrasing has improved me as a musician, and I will continue to focus on these elements when playing new pieces. We also practiced sight reading, which helped improve my sense of rhythm—something I had struggled with. Practicing scales helped me learn more about music theory and the importance of scales in improving musicality and technical skills. I began focusing on my tone and using a tuner each morning to improve not only my sound individually but also the band’s overall sound. I will continue to work on these aspects and keep them in mind when practicing new pieces. Overall, this past year in band has been an amazing musical experience for me, and I hope to learn even more in the future.
