Jazz Concert Reflection

During this last performance of the year, I felt immensely proud of my articulation throughout all the pieces we performed. I paid close attention to the various articulations, such as the staccatos, tenutos, and so forth. Additionally, I focused more on the dynamics in jazz band than in concert band. For example, in “Spider-Man,” there is a section where the saxes play chords and we are instructed to play forte-piano, with a crescendo leading to forte. I could clearly hear myself executing that dynamic well. Overall, I am proud of my dynamic variety and diverse articulations. If I could change one thing about my performance, it would be to work on my tone. In some areas, my embouchure would tense up, causing me to sound off-tone, and I could feel that the band sounded off because of this. My higher register notes, in particular, were challenging, and I struggled to sound good on them. I also really enjoyed my solo in “A Day in the Life of a Fool.” I aimed to convey emotion during that part, as it was a very musical section. Overall, during this last concert of the year, I feel that my jazziness and swinging have improved compared to the other concerts we had this past year. In “Cotton Tail,” I could really hear myself trying to swing and sound more “rabbity,” as we were supposed to in a swingy piece like “Cotton Tail.” The same goes for “Spider-Man”; I tried to swing as much as possible. Even though I am very new to jazz and this year was my first exploring and playing it, I learned many aspects and styles of jazz and will continue exploring this genre in the future. This past year in jazz band, I experienced various genres within jazz and learned many new things, such as how to solo, swing notes, and more jazz music theory about which notes sound good together. We explored subgenres in jazz such as swing, funk, bossa nova, Latin jazz, and more. I also discovered many new genres within jazz by playing and sight-reading new pieces in class, which was very helpful. Overall, in the upcoming years, I hope to learn even more theory to improve my soloing skills for my future performances.
