Business Education 9

This course introduces many of the basic concepts needed to understand how the business world works. Topics include marketing, accounting, business law, finance, and entrepreneurship.  This is an introductory course to Marketing and Promotion 11, Accounting 11 and E-Commerce 12. This course utilizes computer software such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

Accounting 11

This is course is an excellent foundation for students who intend to get jobs in the business world, become self-employed, or take post-secondary business courses. As an introduction to bookkeeping procedures and accounting concepts, this course allows students to be aware of and capable of completing the basic accounting cycle and financial statements for a small business, using real world examples and projects.

Accounting 12

This course provides a general review of introductory accounting practices and then proceeds to work with more complex concepts and principles. Excel spreadsheets and Simply Accounting software will be used extensively throughout the course. This course provides students with additional skills for employment and gives them a strong head start for future business studies at college or university.

Economic Theory 12

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of economic theory. Students will investigate such topics as economic systems, the structure of business, employment and inflation, money, stabilizing the economy, and international trade. It is of special interest to those who may do further study in law, business management, political science, economics or commerce, or those entering directly into the business world. Students may take this course in their grade 11 year.   This course also meets the Graduation requirement for Social Studies 11.

Business Computer Applications 12

This course will help develop students keyboarding proficiency both as a personal life skill and as a foundation for career development. Students will learn to touch key to industry acceptable standards as well as create personal, school, and business documents using word processing software. This course is designed for the beginner as well as for those who wish to increase their speed and accuracy and learn more advanced word processing skills. Learn how to create reports, letters, tables, and other useful documents; and some advanced word processing and desktop publishing skills by the end of the course.

Marketing and Promotion 11

Have you ever wondered why some products in the marketplace are so popular while others are complete flops? In Marketing 11, students will develop an understanding of marketing strategies that are used to successfully bring goods and services to consumers. Specifically, students will learn about consumer behavior, the business environment, marketing research, retailing, advertising and promotion, pricing, and distribution. Students will prepare a hypothetical marketing/ business plan for a business of their choice. Students also run the Cent School Store where they apply their new concepts and skills through hands on participation. This is an excellent course for students interested in being involved in business but unsure of where to start.

E-Commerce 12

Do you plan to run your own business? E-Commerce 12 provides a practical, “hands-on” opportunity to develop the entrepreneurial spirit required for starting and operating a business. During the semester, students will identify and evaluate business opportunities, assess business ideas, and develop and implement a business plan for a new venture. This course provides students with timely experiences needed for the business world.

Information and Communications Technology 9

This “hands-on” course provides an opportunity to develop digital communication skills in data processing, graphic design, photo editing, presentation software, 2D digital animation, and coding.  This course will help prepare students for a career in the digital world and provide them with newfound skills which they can use to enhance projects for coursework in other curricular areas. Assignments will include working with Microsoft Office Tools; graphics editing and presentation with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Adobe Animate; coding and website design with HTML, CSS, and scripting languages.

Media Design 11

This is a ‘hands-on’ course where students will engage with industry-standard design and media technologies. Have fun exploring graphic media design using various photo-editing software like Photoshop and InDesign; work through the elements and principles of design as you create web pages or make your own animated movies, memes, gifs. This course is very collaborative as students work creatively through the design process.

Media Design 12

This course extends the skills learned in Media Design 11. Students will be challenged to develop higher levels of skill in the areas of media development, information processing, and digital communications. ‘Hands-on’ project work will include advanced photo-editing techniques, advanced print media design, and animated web page creation. This course will further explore software like the Adobe creative suite (Photoshop; Animate; Dreamweaver etc.) or comparable online applications. Students have great independence and choice as they work through the design process.

Digital Animation 11

The focus of this course is on 2D and 3D animation, graphics and multimedia productions. While the course will begin with an introductory week of traditional sketching and character design, students will be using computer tools for their animation work. Digital movie production and game design are strong industries in Vancouver and there are many local post-secondary programs that students can pursue. Students interested in storytelling, creating animated movies, video games, 3D modeling, and creating 3D environments will find this course valuable.

Digital Animation 12

Designed for those students who want to go beyond what they learned in Design 11: Animation & Multimedia, this senior course will allow students to build on the skills previously learned, to produce more advanced 2D & 3D computer animation and multimedia productions. The course will conclude with students writing, creating, and producing an animated short film. If you enjoy creating 2D and 3D animated multimedia productions, then this is the class for you! This course can help prepare students for rewarding careers in related fields in the movies, television, special effects, advertising, and many other design and entertainment related areas.

Advanced Design 12

In this career-focused course, students have an opportunity to be involved in self-directed studies focused on topics of individual interest that relate to a variety of career sectors such as engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban planning, automotive design, computer graphics, fashion design, 2D & 3D animation, 3D game design, and multimedia production. Students will utilize advanced skills, knowledge, and features of previously used- as well as supplementary- software on applicable projects.

3D Game Design 12

The video game industry is thriving, and Vancouver has many post-secondary and employment opportunities in this evolving and exciting field. This 3D Game Design course is designed to teach students the fundamental philosophies of game design and apply them in a hands-on manner using a step-by-step process. The majority of class time in this course will be dedicated to the creation of a working 3D game.  Tools for this course will include Blender, Unity, graphics editing software, and sound editing software.

Computer Programming 11

In today’s digital world, coders are in high demand. Learn to create your own software, applications, and games. Students will learn to design programming algorithms, utilize computational thinking to solve programming problems and code with a high-level programming language to create real-world computer programs. This course is designed to prepare students for study in university-level computer science and software engineering.

Computer Programming 12 - Game Design

Do you have a great idea for a video game? This advanced course is designed to develop programming skills through the process of video game design. Vancouver offers exciting career opportunities in this area and this course can give students the head start needed for post-secondary education. Students will spend some time advancing concepts learned in Computer Programming 11 and a large portion of the course will be spent constructing a working video game using Python and PyGame. Computer Programming 11 is essential for success in this course and it is also recommended that students be comfortable with graphics editing software as they will be expected to create their own graphics.
