Drama 9

This introductory course helps students develop theatre & communication skills, creativity, and get them comfortable performing on stage. Students explore activities/topics including movement, improvisation, theatre games, short skits, scene acting and scene building. The course will help boost confidence and people skills, and introduce students to performing for a film or theatre audience.

Drama 10

Drama 10 provides students an opportunity to explore and create dramatic scenes and characters and to learn and practice the interpersonal skills encompassing the work of the actor. Through the exploration of dramatic scripts, students will learn and practice acting techniques. Student imagination and creativity will also be developed through improvisation and theatre games. The course will help boost confidence and people skills, and prepare students to perform for a film or theatre audience.

Drama 11

This course is designed to develop formal acting skills and to provide extensive experience in presenting scripted material, including award winning plays. Students develop creativity and communication skills through theatre games, script and character analysis; and creating, coaching, and rehearsing, with presentations. Through the exploration of various dramatic scripts, students will learn and practice the techniques of the actor, and understand the psychology of the characters they play, as they reflect real social issues in the world. The focus is on living truthfully in imaginary circumstances. This course will help boost confidence and people skills, and prepare students to perform effectively for film and theatre audiences.

Drama 12

Building on the knowledge and experience gained in Drama, this advanced theatre course is for the motivated acting student interested in honing their performance skills for theatre or film. Through work on dramatic scripts, including award winning plays, students engage in script analysis and learn to both develop physical and behavioural interpretations of characters, and to find and play themselves in different characters’ circumstances. This course will help boost confidence and people skills, and prepare students to perform effectively for film and theatre audiences.

Musical Theater 10/11/12

Through participation in the rehearsal, production, and performance of a Broadway musical, students will practice and polish singing, acting, and dancing skills.  Students will study personal and social responsibility associated with creating, performing, and responding to musical theatre, as well as take creative risks to express ideas, meaning and emotions.  Students will reflect on aesthetic experiences and how they relate to a specific place, time, and context.  Centennial has a long history of producing quality musicals for the school and community. This course is designed for the serious actor, singer, or instrumentalist with a passion for the Broadway genre and REQUIRES extensive after school rehearsal in addition to in-class work.             

Foundation:  None for grade 10, 11 and 12 students; permission of the instructors for grade 9.  

Theatre Production 11

This course REQUIRES extensive after school hours in addition to in-class work. Students must be willing to attend after-school rehearsals several days per week from Oct-December and DAILY after school rehearsals in January.  Students must attend all 6 evening performances in February as they are the tech and stage crew for our major Musical Theatre production.  It will appeal to those students who have an interest in learning set building skills for theatre and stage management or students with artistic abilities for painting/prop design/costuming. It offers training in the technical craft of effective presentation of theatre, focusing primarily on construction of scenery sets and some props. Some students will work on sound and lighting design.

Theatre Production 12: Technical Theater

This course REQUIRES extensive after school hours in addition to in-class work and will continue to build on the skills learned in Theatre Production 11.  Students must be willing to attend after-school rehearsals several days per week from Oct-February and DAILY rehearsals in January; as well, students must attend all 6 evening performances in February as they are the crew for our major Musical Theatre production. It will appeal to those students who want to explore set construction, painting, costuming, light/sound design as well as running those lights/sound during production.

Foundation: Theatre Production 11 or permission of the instructor

Musical Theatre: Pit Band 10/11/12

Through participation in the rehearsal, production, and performance of a Broadway musical, students will practice the inner workings of being a professional pit musician. This course is designed for the serious instrumentalist with a passion for the Broadway genre and REQUIRES extensive after school rehearsals in addition to in-class work. Students must be willing to attend after-school rehearsals several days per week from September-February and DAILY rehearsals in January; as well, students must attend all 6 evening performances in February as they are the Pit Orchestra for our major Musical Theatre production. 

Foundation:  None for grade 10, 11 and 12 students; permission of the instructors for grade 9.
