After this course in BC First Peoples it provided me a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and contemporary issues faced by First Nations people in British Columbia. In terms of my perspective in First Nations Peoples, it hasn’t changed much as I learned stuff about First Nations prior to this course. Before learning of anything of First Peoples, it has changed in numerous ways. It has deepened my understanding of systemic injustices and historical trauma that they have faced. Also learning about cultures, traditions, and languages have helped me foster a greater appreciation for the richness and diversity, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions.
One thing that has stood out to me most were the guest speakers who came to our school to talk about their experiences and what they did to overcome their situation. They often shared oral histories, stories, and teachings that are passed down through generations, offering us, non-Indigenous audiences a deeper understanding of Indigenous worldviews and values.
This course helped me to understand more of the Social Awareness Competency. Through discussions on historical injustices such as colonization, residential schools, and ongoing systemic barriers faced by Indigenous peoples, guest speakers raise awareness about social injustices. By engaging with First Peoples guest speakers, it exposed me to more diverse cultural perspectives and histories. By actively listening to their stories and teachings, I developed a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and values.
