Within this play, there were many important themes, although the theme I focused on the most was slavery. I think that especially during Shakespeare’s time, slavery was a very important topic, as almost all people of higher standings had slaves. Slavery, as we know now, is not acceptable. This piece of literature expressed that Shakespeare shared the same beliefs, as Prospero, the main character, freed all of his slaves at the end. I think that was a message to the people watching the play to release their slaves as well. Shakespeare’s genius to have brought up points such as this so early on is remarkable. This really affected my view on past society, as this proves we knew better in 1610 leaving no excuse for the horrors that slaves had to endure. With this in mind, I can’t help but wonder what other concepts that we perceive as acceptable in society today that will be deemed unacceptable in years to come. This also leads me to wonder if people have already figured that out, expressing their opinions thorough art. The tempest has certainly opened my eyes to concepts new to me, yet old to time.
