The Crucible and Kohlbergs Morals

There are many examples of Kohlberg’s morals that can be found within The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Kohlberg’s morals created by psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg are categories based on how people make decisions, there are three categories those being pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional. The Crucible has a very diverse cast and putting each individual into one or more of these titles is difficult and is what this essay is about.

The first category is pre-conventional, where characters act in a way to avoid punishment or to gain a reward. Abigail Williams is a quintessential example of a pre-conventional character because she will do anything to get what she wants, not caring if she hurts others. An example of this is when she cries out saying, “She made me do it! She made Betty do it!” Abigail immediately throws Tituba under the bus to escape punishment for dancing in the woods. This moment shows her manipulative behavior and how little she cares about others in contrast to herself. Her lies would later kill multiple people and families, but this still doesn’t bother her. Another clear example is Tituba, who becomes one of Abigail’s first victims. When she is accused of working with the devil, she responds by confessing, “He say Mr. Parris must be killed!” Though Tituba has never helped the devil, she knows that denying the accusations will only cause her death. So, she confessed to avoid this. Lastly, Mary Warren also acts in a very pre-conventional way. When she says, “I’ll not hang with you! I love God!” she turns on Proctor to save herself. Like Tituba, Mary’s confession is not out of guilt but out of fear of punishment. Mary Warren is constantly switching up and lying to avoid punishment.

The second category is Conventional, where characters make decisions in a way to fit in with a group. While Mary Warren acts pre-conventional, she is also a very conventional character. This is proven when she says. “I’ll murder you, he says.” Mary warren is once again lying but this time she’s following the lead of Abigail and her peers trying to fit in and not wanting to be ousted by her friends. This action proves that her decisions are influenced by her want to fit it. The next example is Judge Danforth. He will do anything to keep his career in the court with the other judges, and this is proven when he says, “A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it.” This quote shows that Danforth will not backdown no matter how bad it looks because all of the other judges are in on it and if he were to back down that would prove that he was wrong and was fooled by a little girl. The last conventional character is Elizebeth Proctor. Elizebeth was always a very good person abiding by the rule to never lie, but the one time she did lie was in the court when her husband was on trail. She says, “My husband is a goodly man sir.”  This is a great example because she lies for the first time for her husband showing just how much she loves him but unfortunately it doesn’t turn out well.

The third and final category is post-conventional. This is when a character isn’t influenced by anything other than their morals and what they think is right. The first example is Elizabeth Proctor. She is undoubtedly the purest character in the story and just does things because she thinks it’s the right thing to do even if it hurts her. An example of this is when she says, “He have his goodness now, God forbid I take it from him.” This quote shows how caring Elizabeth proctor is, she knows she’s about to lose one of the most important people in her life but realizes that if she saves him, he will just suffer more. Knowing this she puts her feelings aside letting him die a good man. The second character is John Hale, a character who starts a lot like Danforth just wanting to keep his job in the court but after seeing what was happening, he realized it was wrong. He said, “I quit this court!” He knows doing this made him lose the comfortable spot he was in but seeing everything that was being done to the innocent civilians he decides to leave. Lastly, Giles Correy, when he was accused Giles would try his hardest to save himself but when he gives his testimony, he is unable to name the person who gave him it. No matter how much the court tortures him he would not name this person and before he died, he says two words those being “More weight.” Giles knows if he confesses, he will live but he also knows that wouldn’t be right. Him dying like this might be sad but the most important thing is that he died a good man.

In conclusion The Crucible by Arthur Miller has many examples of pre-conventional, conventional, and post conventional characters. And although some characters might be extremely complicated to understand when put into these categories you can see that each individual had their own reason for committing the actions they did even if they weren’t good reasons.

Metalwork Edu-Blog Assignment

As a part of Mr Peterson’s metal 11 class i made a rocket stove out of metal. our first step was to cut a piece of metal into three parts then weld it into an L shape, then we were tasked to make a handle, a grill and legs with some creativity. i made some mistakes with the legs making them to short and had to grind them off and weld a longer piece so it was stable. for the grill i used a screw to enable it to spin so you can move it as you please. for the handle i attached to pieces of metal to the sides. i feel i did well on this project and achieved the goals i put for myself. here are some pictures of the project.

Transforming Parabola

The orange graph in the image above show’s the parent function y=x^2, this is the base equation for graphing a parabola. The light blue parabola uses the equation y=-7x^2. The new coefficient is a, the base equation would be y=ax^2. The a represents the change in width and which direction the parabola opens. If a equaled a positive number the parabola would open the opposite way like in the first image. Another change is if the number was a fraction which would make it wider. The next equation is y=3(x-4)^2 which is the green parabola. This adds the variable h to the equation which shifts the parabola horizontally on the x axis. The base equation would be y=a(x-h)^2. If the number is a negative in the equation the parabola will shift right and opposite if its a positive in the equation, this is because the base equation has h as a negative meaning that when h equals a positive it would still be (x-h)^2. h also is the x value in the vertex. The last parabola is the purple one and has the equation y=5(x+7)^2+3. The last variable is k, the base equation would be y=a(x-h)^2+k. The variable k shifts the parabola vertically on the y axis. if the number is positive it will move up and if negative it will move down. k also equals the y value in the vertex.

Self Assessment

How did you represent the same mathematical idea in multiple ways in this assignment?

Even though the equations were different they all used the parent function and every time i added something new it stayed into the next equation as well.

State some of the relevant mathematical vocabulary words you used to demonstrate your understanding and their definitions. State where you found the definitions (your own memory, class notes, online?)

I used words like horizontal, vertical, shifts, y/x axis to make sure people know how the parabola is moving on the graph.

How did you use formatting to share your information in a clear and organized way?

I added the variables one at a time so the explanation were less chunky and had different pictures for each parabola so you can really focus on the specifics for the parabola.

core competency goals

if I become angry or frustrated, doing homework to help me be more productive or calm I will plan to take breaks or walks, I will also take my time so I do the job well the first time.

Some of the things I plan to do to stay mentally and physically healthy include making sure I’m not spending my entire night working by taking breaks every now and then. Second thing I can do is take walks to escape technology.

CPR Reflection

My Learning Of CPR

CPR reflection

I learned that, CPR takes a lot of energy and time. It’s also a lot harder than it looks. The key take away in my opinion is placement, you need to have the right placement or it won’t work. Another key takeaway is you have to continue the CPR until any signs of life and or emergency services arrived. If you don’t listen to the nutrition package. Then you would be more at risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Core Competency Reflection

One way I see this learning helping others is…with this learning I’ll be able to help others who are in critical condition with their lives on the line.

One area of CPR in which I’d like to spend more time learning is… the vocal part, I’m not very good at projecting my voice and it could hurt my chances of saving someone.

When I need to boost my mood or refocus I… take a minute to sit down and breath to calm myself and go back in with a new mindset.

Reflecting on my first year

My grade 9 year

This year I learn a multitude of subjects, units and lessons. This year I enjoyed my DDA class, some specifics are I enjoyed the 3D Modelling unit on fusion 360 and the animation subject that were doing now. I’m most proud of being able to make friends with people in my class’s and keeping in touch with old friends.

My favourite website

My favourite website will probably be https://m.youtube.com/

Not only is this a website where I can watch my favourite YouTube creators, it’s also a place where my teachers found educational videos to make our classes a bit more interesting. It helped me when I didn’t really understand the subject and needed a bit of help.

My favourite video

this video is the start of our animation unit in DDA, it’s really helpful and helped me learn the basics of animation. I really enjoy animation so this was a really cool and educational video to watch.

My favourite image

This was the first image i took that i actually liked, this proved two things. one it showed i actually liked photography and taking nature/animal pictures. two it reminds me of the fun i had at the zoo with my family.

My Favorite Quote

My favorite quote is “if you worry you suffer twice.”

I have a lot of anxiety so this quote helps me realize if I let anxiety take control then i, “suffer twice.” this helps me in school, home and anywhere else that I would feel anxious.

Geography Town Project

By Jacob

Landforms.

1. (blue arrow) Through the middle of Edmonton there is a huge river called north Saskatchewan river, this is one of the many landforms that are in Edmonton. It is there because there is a slow but noticeable downward decline from fort Saskatchewan to Devon. They make money from the river by using hydropower, the water from the river flows down and about 300 Km away is a hydroelectric facility.

2. (water drop) There are a lot of wetlands in Edmonton, this is because of mainly one reason. They get a lot of rain/snow. And when the rain falls, it falls heavy and same thing with the snow. They make money from this by gathering the resources from the wetlands (fish and shellfish, blueberries, cranberries, timber and wild rice.) and sell them to people like, towns folk, other cities, fishermen, store, etc.

Climate.

3. (snowflake) The snow in Edmonton is caused by the extreme cold and winds they get there, It is also very dry in Edmonton which makes snow much more common. Even though the snow has a very small impact on the economy, they still can make money on stuff like, snow clearing industry’s. These people go around and pick up the snow from the roads and the ground. Snowy sports, The snow on the ground makes it ideal for snowy sports like, snowboarding, ice skating, sledding etc.

4. (desert) It is very dry in Edmonton, this is due to the location in the Canadian prairies which is know for there low humidity levels. It is also influenced by its high latitude with a similar latitude of northern Europe. Although the dry climate also has a very small economic impact on the city they still make a small bit of money because, the dry climate reduces energy consumption for things like air conditioning.

Vegetation.

5. (tree) One of the most common vegetations in Edmonton is the forestry, this is because Edmonton gets a lot of sun, water and nutrients. They get a lot of the water from the melted snow they have, they are in a very sunny area (barely see clouds even if its raining/snowing.) and the soil is combined with decaying plant material which gives it nutrients. They make money off of the forests by selling the wood material to other places for trade, they have a sustaining amount of this resource so it’s a cash flow for Edmonton.

6. (flower) The second vegetation is grass lands, the reason grasslands can grow is because of the good soil and lots of rain. Ways they could make money are. through wildcrafting, grasslands are filled with many berry’s plants and more. which can be turned into medicine, food, beverages, floral decoration etc.

ADL – Financial Literacy

800,000×0.15 = 120,000

80,000×1.042 = 83,360

83,360×1.042 = 86,861.12

86,861.12×1.042 = 90,509.29

Savings 10,000 + 10,000 + 10,000 = 30,000

Total 90,509.29 + 30,000 = 120,509.29

Justification.

Risks: That’s a lot of money that you cant touch for 3 years, The reason this works best for me is that its not actually a real risk. sure you cant use the money that you put in the GIC, but there is no chance of losing money.

Strengths: Its a guaranteed investment, This works best for me because this means there’s no risk of losing money. that no matter what you will gain more money that you put in, this gives me peace of mind knowing that I cant lose money.

Collaboration and contributions

How did I find working with a group. With this project I didn’t work in a group, I think it was probably for the better. I was less distracted and got the work done faster with more quality.

How did you contribute to the group? And how did others in the group contribute to your learning? I did the work with Mr. Ruditch. I didn’t have a group and wasn’t here to see the other groups. so I didn’t learn anything from the other groups.

Did you use any other the solutions proposed by your group? Why or why not? I used the solution from Mr Ruditch but not from anyone else since I wasn’t here to see the other projects.

How would you rate your ability to collaborate with others in your group on a scale of 1-4: I would say I’m a 2.5 but I wouldn’t know because I wasn’t in a group for this project.

Core Competency Reflection

-I can work with others to achieve a goal, I showed this by being able to learn everything I missed in a short amount of time through my friends and Mr Ruditch.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I take a minute break then get back to doing my work. if that doesn’t work I ask questions to try to get myself back into things.

English 9 Final Reflection

My Artifact:

My artifact is my conflict project, I chose this because I did well and enjoyed the assignment. it is a project about internal and external conflict.

Curricular competency reflection

What did you learn during this assignment or task and how did you grow in your writing, speaking, or representing skills? I learned that if I take my time and put a lot of effort into my work, I can do well on anything. I grew in my writing and speaking, I grew in my story telling, punctuation and grammar.

Core Competency Reflection

Share the experience of communication for your artifact I considered my audience by, taking in every idea and try to implement it into my story and making sure that all of it was appropriate for school. I represented my ideas successfully by, going into detail about how to the character felt. I feel like I could grow on, making the story a little bit longer and going into detail on how the character coped with his conflict.

Share the experience of creative thinking for your artifact I formed and developed my ideas from personal experience, When I was younger I got bullied and had stage fright. Strategies I use to generate ideas is by asking my friends or looking back at my old assignments. I would improve next time by being a bit more critical and less creative.

“I Am Able To…”

I am able to learn from my mistakes, accept them, and become a better person because of them.

I am able to create friendships with people I just met and I can communicate with them without any problems.

I am able to learn and become better at sports/work that I’ve never done before.
