Physics Core Competency Self-Assessment

Physics Slinky Lab

Communication & Collaboration

I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share.

In this lab, we were to work collaboratively in a group to learn about types of waves, and how different conditions can alter them. In my group of three, we split up the work evenly by tasks; one person recorded, while the other two would carry out the procedure. I was paired up with partners I was not entirely familiar with, so I took on a leadership role and prompted the group to start. I was tasked with moving the slinky in parts ‘A’ to ‘E’ to create transverse and longitudinal waves, as well as fixed end and open reflection waves while another group member held down the other end of the slinky. The other group member recorded the results, but we all ended up having a discussion after each question so the answers were not limited to the recorder. We were able to finish all of the lab questions during the block as we communicated and worked together effectively by asking each other questions when they came up.
