“The soldiers in “Hero of War” come to a clearer realization of the horrors of war than the soldiers in “Disposable Heroes” who carry on blindly. In “Hero of War,” gives a clear representation of the brutality of war. It shows a soldier who gets recruited. He was excited to join and ready to be a hero for his country, though it took a quick turn as soon as he started. He saw the horror from soldiers, as soldiers disrespected one soldier and “pissed in his hands” and then proceeded to join in. He knew the action was wrong but continued to do it. “Hero of War” gave a sense reality of the killing of soldiers and how they were forced into doing orders, they didn’t agree on. As “Hero of War” states “she walked through bullets and haze.” “She” can be represented as a metaphor for country and is shown as the country fighting for its life and home. “I asked her to stop, I begged her to stay, but she pressed on, so I lifted my gun and I fired away.” The soldier is forced into killing all the soldiers in this country and they press him, but he doesn’t want to do it but he wants to follow orders as others did and be “a hero of war.” “Hero of War” glamorizes war in a way because after every horrific act they commit as soldiers, he feels everyone will “be damn proud of me.” The soldier brought home medals and scars after the war but he also brought home his home flag. This flag now “gathers with dust” as the soldier felt he couldn’t do it anymore. He couldn’t go through another war being forced to follow through with disturbing orders, and seeing the brutality of soldiers and what war is really like. On the contrary, “Disposable Heroes” has a more cold, blunt side of war. The soldiers are shown to be used and discarded as the title states. “Disposable Heroes” shows the same perspective for each soldier. “Now an empty shell,” tells how the soldiers are emotionless with no soul just as a bullet shell is empty with no souls or emotions. The soldiers are desensitized as the “barking of a machine gun, does nothing to me now.” They feel nothing, they are in a routine, and know what they have to do. “Bred to kill, not to care,” the soldiers know their only purpose out on the battlefield is to kill and have no fear. Though the soldiers know nothing else than the battlefield. They were born into this and were “molded day by day” into preparing for war. The soldiers went through hell and they saw it as that, “Disposable Heroes” shows how used and discarded the soldiers were, whereas “Hero of War,” showed the glamorization of going into war but more of the emotion shown through the war as compared to the blunt emotionless soldiers in “Disposable Heroes.” The soldiers in “Hero of War” come to a clearer realization of the horrors of war than the soldiers in “Disposable Heroes” who carry on blindly.”

This paragraph reflects my weaknesses by I did too many quotations and it just became a generalization, I explained too much and didn’t contrast the two songs. My organization of this paragraph was strong with the structure. To add, my So what? was also good, I would say my strengths when I am doing a piece of writing is the setup and structure and my main ideas. This paragraph was difficult and it took me awhile but I tried my best and managed to get a B plus on this piece of writing. This wasn’t my best piece of writing but i took note and have improved from this paragraph on my other writing pieces.

Think generally about you and writing: describe what writing is like for you? easy? Hard? Why is it easy or hard? Or what specific parts are easy or hard? Or what kinds of writing is easier or more enjoyable for you than others? Do you write outside of a formal school situation? How ? when? What is that like?

Writing for me is easy when i understand the concept or idea of what i am writing. If i don’t know any of that, its quite hard for me to get a grasp of what to write and how to write it. I would say for me writing literary paragraphs is enjoyable for me because its a simple paragraph with quotations and not a lot of though or writing has to go into it. Essays would be the least enjoyable because it is a lot of writing and organization and there has to be some thought put into it. To add, I do not write outside of school, writing isn’t my favourite, i only do it when i have too. I would say overall, i enjoyed writing in English 12, even though some topics were difficult, but i got through it and did pretty good on my writing assignments.

Math 11 Foundations Stats Self Assessment

Something new I learned is the standard deviation of an equation. It Is a measure of how dispersed the data is in relation to the mean. Low standard deviation means data are clustered around the mean, and high standard deviation indicates data are more spread out. A thing I well understood in this unit was a – scores I understood them quickly and they were fun do to do in equations, word problems and creating the formula for it, they helps me out a lot and I was able to make good use of them to solve problems. A challenge this unit was normal distribution, I didn’t quite understand it that easily and I struggled a bit but I tried my best to understand the whole concept but it was a hard thing for me to grasp in this unit. And finally something I would like to work on for our next unit is just keeping up with my homework because it’s a big resource in these units and understanding and completing the homework will help me when we are doing problems in class and when it comes to tests or quizzes it will help me out alot.

I demonstrated that I can collect and analyze evidence when I collected data for our natural selection lab on how many black birds survived and how how how many red birds survived and we took that and created a chart and analyzed it to see based on which coloured environment they were in. We then took the data from each environment and found an average for each environment. I showed that I can collect data, analyze it and create something out of it

Creative Thinking

In our first Spanish 11 script , I used the core competency creative thinking. I created this script with my group and we used all of our note packages and handouts, to help us and we used our minds to come up with the dialogue of the crops we came up with so many situation and things we could say and we created this all by the flow of it all and the criteria we had to meet to achieve a good grade. Creative thinking is a big part in making a script making process, you have to think outside the box’s and come up with creative and humour concepts, it is what makes the whole dialogue and brings it all together.

Communication

I’m this the creation of this script I used communication, in our group we had to communicate with each other our ideas and what we thought should be put into the script. We also also used communication in our presentation, we had to present this to the whole class and we had to communicate our scrip out loud as if we are having a conversation in front of them . Communication was a big part in this script making and presentation because without communication this whole dialogue wouldn’t meet the criteria and wouldn’t be complete and overall we would’ve achieved a good grade.

This is my character infographic on the story “A Mountain Legend”

Curricular Competency

What did you learn about Indigenous themes, issues, or perspectives during this assignment and how did you grow in your reading, listening, or viewing skills? 

I learned about indigenous perspectives through the character infographic i created by looking at how the indigenous boy named Jason and the way he thinks, his characteristic traits and perspectives he has through the story “A mountain legend”, how he thinks he has to climb the mountain to be a warrior, since all his ancestors and people of his Cree community are warriors. Jason mindset was that he has to prove to everyone he’s a warrior even though he puts his life at risk while doing it. His perspective throughout this whole story was about how he can become a warrior and prove to all that he’s not a chicken. To add, i grew in my reading skills through this assignment by reading a short story “A Mountain Legend” and analyzing and identifying the different characteristics and traits Jason had, and created a character analysis from it. This taught me to gather every critical detail in a story because it’s all important and can help identify a character more in a story.

Creative Thinking

The core competency I have chosen for my artifact is creative thinking. I demonstrate this by being able to create a body of work over time. I did this by, when I created my character analysis I was given one week to do it, over that one week I gather ideas and information to create my character infographic and each day I would add to it because I thought of more ideas and traits that the character demonstrated in the story. So, at first I started off with some ideas in a character analysis chart, I then over the course of a few days, took those ideas and created my infographic into this creative, colourful, well thought out infographic made on the app canva. My character infographic on the character Jason the story “A Mountain Legend” has illustrated on how i can create a body of work over time, and reflects my creative thinking in English First Peoples 11.

Core Competency Self – Assessment

Should our criminal justice system be more punitive or rehabilitative? Why? 

I believe our criminal justice system should be more punitive, I believe this because I think offender should be punished for the crimes they commit, they have committed a crime against society, and they should have to be punished for their reckless behaviour. If our criminal justice system was more punitive than we be making society safer and locking away criminals who have put society at risk or have caused people pain. Though some people may think rehabilitation is better because it makes offender reflect on the crime they have committed and offers them to change their reckless behaviour. I firmly believe that being more punitive towards offender is more effective than rehabilitation.  

Critical Thinking

The core competency i have demonstrated in my law paragraph is critical thinking. With critical thinking i can analyze my own beliefs and consider views that do not fit with them. I demonstrate this b y in my paragraph i show my belief and opinion on why i believe our criminal justice system should be more punitive. I also, consider how others point of view may be that the criminal justice system should be more rehabilitative, though i don’t agree with that point of view, i can consider it and acknowledge peoples beliefs and opinions.

The core competencies i demonstrated with the brain disorder assignment is creative thinking. I can get ideas when use my senses to explore, i demonstrated this by doing my research on bi – polar disorder, i gather facts and information on it, to help my partner and i to create a story on bi – polar disorder. I also demonstrated communication, i can work with others to achieve a common goal, i do my share. My partner and i, split up different responsibilities in the group equally , and worked well on the project together. We wanted to achieve a good grade on this assignment, so we worked hard and did our shares in the project, to achieve a decent grade. With this assignment, my partner and i worked har, put in our efforts, gather well done research and put together a creative, colourful, well thought out brain disorder story on bi – polar disorder.

What Core Competencies did you Demonstrate With the Research Assignment?  

Communication

The core competencies i demonstrated with the research assignment is communication. With communication, i can be an active listener, i support and encourage the person speaking. I demonstrated this by when we were in our groups gathering research and speaking on the topic of music, i listened to each and everyone of my group members who were sharing their ideas, and i was an active listener to those who were speaking. Also, with Communication, i can understand and share information about a topic that is important to me. I demonstrated this by when we were talking about our research on music and how it affect peoples efforts when doing school work, i know quite a lot about music and then different genres, and i’ve listened to music while doing school work before. So, i shared my knowledge and thoughts on how i feel about listening to music and how i think others feel about their work efforts while listening to music, based on the different genres of music.

Communicating

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in my trigonometry homework. I get extra practice sheets to go along with the lesson I learned that day. I communicate clearly on these extra practice sheets by showing my work and achieving the correct answer on the problem I had to solve. 

Thinking

Critical and Reflective Thinking

I used to think trigonometry was difficult at the start of the unit because I’ve never learned it before and now I know that it’s not as difficult as it looks because I learned how to do trigonometry and the different aspects of it and how to apply it to word problems, complex triangles and different types of triangles. I learned this through lessons taught my teacher and taking notes down so I can comprehend how to do trigonometry.

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this artifact. In this picture of my trigonometry extra practice sheet, I use my notes taken down in class and ally the notes taken and the knowledge I received and apply it to my extra practice sheets where I use all these resources to help me make decisions and judgment calls on how to solve these problems correctly.
