1.3 Squares and Square Roots

Squares and square roots may seem complicated, but they’re actually quite easy once you get the hang of it.

Terms You Should Know:

  • Squares: to raise a number to the second power; i.e. to multiply a number by itself twice
  • Square Roots: a number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the square (the square root of 4 is 2 because 2*2 = 4)
  • Perfect Squares: a number made by multiplying 2 equal integers (9 is a perfect square because it can be shown as 3*3)
  • Cubes: to raise a number to the third power, i.e. to multiply a number by itself three times
  • Cube Roots: a number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the cube of said number (the cubed root of 27 is 3 because 3*3*3 = 27)
  • Perfect Cubes: a number made by multiplying 3 equal integers (125 is a perfect cube because 5*5*5 = 125. 400 is not a perfect cube because there are no 3 equal integers that multiply to 400)
