The last section of unit 2 will be applications/ word problems. Although they may seem intimidating at first, once you learn the different methods of solving them, it will be much easier!
Strategies for Solving Word Problems
- Read the problem carefully, many time. Know what you need to solve for, and what you are given.
- Let x represent the unknown variable, and present everything else in terms of x.
- If possible (usually), make a diagram to illustrate your problem, which will also help you visualize the problem.
- Write an equation relating your unknown quantities to what you are given.
- Solve the equation.
- Check your solution in terms of the original problem to make sure your answer makes sense.
