2.7 Applications of Rational Equations

The last section of unit 2 will be applications/ word problems. Although they may seem intimidating at first, once you learn the different methods of solving them, it will be much easier!

Strategies for Solving Word Problems
  1. Read the problem carefully, many time. Know what you need to solve for, and what you are given.
  2. Let x represent the unknown variable, and present everything else in terms of x.
  3. If possible (usually), make a diagram to illustrate your problem, which will also help you visualize the problem.
  4. Write an equation relating your unknown quantities to what you are given.
  5. Solve the equation.
  6. Check your solution in terms of the original problem to make sure your answer makes sense.
