Where the Blood Mixes

There are many examples within the play that illustrate the character of Mooch. It is evident that Mooch is a complex character. Mooch is a strong individual, who has been through a lot in residential schools. He will never forget the moment he saw “the shadows move like that”. He has been abused in multiple different ways that are unforgettable, but he still manages to move on with life and fights the memories that still haunt him. Furthermore, he is kindhearted and caring. His close friend, Floyd passed out in the bar one time and Mooch took care of him by putting “him in between two garbage bins”. He thought that it would prevent Floyd from getting robbed and wet from the rain, which shows Mooch’s soft side as he was worried for his dear friend Floyd. Despite Mooch being a good person, he is also selfish. Mooch went through his partners “coin jar and stole money from her”. His partner, June, has been working hard to pay off their phone and grocery bills, but Mooch spends all that money at the bar, gambling and drinking his beer, ignorant about June’s feelings. Therefore, Mooch being a complex character is shown through his hardships, and has both positive and negative traits.
