The Writing Process

Through the interview and writing process of creating this essay I have not only learned much more about my father’s experience but also, many useful writing and interviewing skills. The whole process began with curating a list of questions to ask during the interview, which taught me about the different types of interview questions. Those types of interview questions being close ended and open ended. Another thing I learned was the importance of recording the interview in combination with taking notes to find multiple strong quotes that can be used to enhance the essay. One aspect of the writing process that I initially thought to be redundant was the peer-editing portion. But, after taking part in the peer-editing I found it very enlightening to see different writing styles, as well as, have feedback on how I could improve my own essay.

    During the interview and peer editing processes I was required to communicate clearly and purposefully. In order to obtain the information I required to write my essay, it was imperative that the interviewee (my father) understood what I was asking.

Before we began as well as after the interview concluded I made sure to thank my father for taking the time to allow me to interview him.     Evidence of this competency can be observed once again during the peer editing aspect of the essay , in addition to the overall writing process. Throughout the entire writing process I kept the criteria in mind to ensure that I met all aspects, such as having strong quotes and transition sentences.

    My goal regarding this area is, in future situations such as peer editing, I plan to reach out and ask people that I don’t know very well to give feedback on my essay. I am working on this goal because I believe someone I don’t know too well might give more honest feedback than one of my close friends. In order to achieve this goal, when it is time to ask people to edit your work I will stand up and ask someone I am not too familiar with that I think will give me useful feedback; rather than just stay seated and work with my friends sitting right next to me.
