Chemistry 11 Core competency Reflection

Artifact

Core Competency – I can reflect on my thinking

This was a lab where we had to create a solution in a volumetric flask. We had to weigh out a certain amount of substance, then create a solution, then rinse the beaker into the V flask. When I was doing the after lab questions I had to creatively think about how to answer them, relating to previous thoughts and opinions during the lab to create an answer.

Anatomy & Physiology 12 CC Assessment

Artifact

My artifact is our cell membrane diffusion lab

Core Competencies

Thinking CC: I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is

The evidence of that is that me and my partner who were in charge of the glucose cell (clear cell) we needed to do it three times as the side kept bursting. We did it faster and faster each time, while also increasing delicacy. We finally managed to get it done and get in the water for observations which we had to do right when the cell was dropped in and 20 mins later.

Creative Writing 10

My Writing

Core Competency Reflection

  1. One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is by almost making my brain overclock or overdrive, thinking of A LOT of things in a very short time span. I can be very imaginative and think of so many options to so many problems.
  2. I am so curious about how I could make my work better, and how I could improve my syntax and some grammar too. I am excited to learn more about how I could keep writing to make it even better.
  3. I think my experiences such as playing volleyball, loving animals, and being involved in the community by working influenced my choice of course / hobbies / teams because I want to be in AP biology for next year, and I want to take Composition 11 for my English course because I think it would help with my writing for biology.
  4. One goal I have set for myself is that I want to improve on the following; “Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…” because I feel like I don’t communicate as much as I should or would want to and I feel like communicating more would help improve my grades overall

Stock Market: Self Assessment

Artifact:

Curricular Response

  1. Stock VS Bond

What is the difference between a stock and a bond?

  • A stock is a share in a company owning a piece of the company while a bond is a loan given to a company that they pay back to you over time

Which security tends to have the best returns?

  • Having stocks in a company is more risky but has higher returns

2. Risk

How are risk and return connected?

  • By buying from a risky but highly profitable company will give you a high return, but is risky because the company could go bankrupt at any time.

What are some steps you could take to mitigate risk while investing in the stock market?

  • By diversifying your stock portfolio, AKA getting a lot of spread out stocks among smaller companies.

3. Balance

What does it mean to have a “well-balanced portfolio?”

  • It shows the proportion of bonds to shares you own, while also showing your diversified portfolio.

What is “rebalancing” a portfolio and why is it important?

  • Rebalancing your portfolio is when you either sell stocks or bonds depending on the market, like a market crash where you would buy more stocks than bonds due to how low the market is.

Core Competency Self Assessment

How much information did you use to help you with your decision-making process?

I used however much information we were given to with my decision process. With all the information given to me I can use my mind to invest in what I want and save what I want, while also keeping myself from recklessly buying stuff, mainly liabilities, like cars, new phone, or any other item you buy that depreciates when you buy it

Has investing become a more approachable or attainable concept to you?

For me it has become more approachable but I’m still not too sure about higher risk investments like stocks, because I’d rather put my money towards other things that are more interesting like getting into real estate, which is a lot safer and more trusted. I’m also going to resist from buying liabilities and buying assets, because I can discipline myself to do that and will overwork myself so that I can get a house as fast as possible.

What is something that you have learned which you have changed your mind about?

I changed my mind about investing, beforehand thinking it stupid to invest all your money into something super risky. Now though, I think it would be smart, as long as you balance your portfolio or trust in certain parts of the market. It helps if I keep track of my funds very closely, by doing whatever I can in my spare time to look at the market, seeing what’s low and what’s high. Also investing in my retirement fund would be something I’ve changed my mind about because I thought it would happen naturally to save for retirement but it’s not the case, and I will save for retirement as much as I can.

Core Competency Self-Assignment

Collaborating

  1. I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by…
  • We mostly worked together to make a complete idea and instead of minimally talking and simply finishing the work, we actually bounced ideas off of each other and making a key that was somewhat easy to read and made Latin names that are similar to each other if they were close to each other

Short Story Writing Process

My Story

Core Competency Reflection

Creative Thinking

  • One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is…

Writing, and making stories stimulates me to write more, and more, and more. This was very helpful, when making good copies of this short story and others, to have a good final copy.

  • An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is…

Whenever I needed help with poetry, or stories, or Shakespeare’s performances at the beginning of the semester, Mr. Wallace would help me create ideas on how to approach something, and giving a second opinion whenever needed for projects and assignments.

  • An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is…

The grammar section, where we double-underlined verbs, underlined once the subject of the verb, arrowed from the verb to the object of it and much more, we learned over a long period of time, and helped make the entire situation of writing the short story a lot faster.

  • One goal moving forward…

One goal is to make more stories with more detail, and greater narrative – descriptive ratio. I can make short stories easily, but I can only make mainly narrative stories, when a great amount of detail is needed. The similes and metaphors in other short stories like “The Sea Devil”, and others like it are amazingly descriptive in the way they portray the story and events inside it.

Musical Performance Reflection

Fall Performance

Curricular Competencies Reflection

During the year, I have learned how to play the alto saxophone, and played through multiple performances. During the Fall Performance I had basic knowledge of how to play properly, not being able to connect the notes together. As of now, I am able to play most notes in most songs, making minimal mistakes. With help from my fellow saxophones, I was able to hear them play and evolve through that. Improvements can always be made, especially for a first-year saxophone player like me. For example, I cannot hit very low notes first try all the time, and my breath control can be improved also. I plan to continue going on with music but mainly with tenor sax or another form of brass instrument.

Core Competencies Reflection

Communication

  • I can work with others to achieve a goal

I can help work with my friends and other members of the band to make a well-performed concert. Other times, I talk with some members to help them improve and vice versa

Immigration In BNA – Board Game

Artifact

We made a board game that followed some of the events that happened in BNA. Our class was learning about pre-confederation Canada. A game where you are an immigrant coming over to 1800s Canada, and living through it.

Explanation of Board Game

This board game was called “The Game of Colonization”. The game was made for two purposes; first, it was a purpose to study for the test a few days after everyone played the games, and second, it was made to see how accurate your information is and correct it before said test. It was a game that consisted of going along the board with your career, and avoiding major taxes from the government to pay for military, and other expenses. You started off with choosing a career (picking up from career pile or going through the other route to go through university / college), then would go along the board picking up action cards with either scenarios or questions on them.

If we had more time with the board game or had put more time into making the board look neater, we would’ve been able to make a better overall product. If we had used card instead of paper would’ve been easier to pick up the action card, or would’ve been more organized cards. With more time we could’ve been able to draw all the water or used a design on the water to use less pencil. We should’ve made other cards too, like house, something to do with fur trade, and / or making careers more accurate. Making some tiles clearer would’ve been useful as well.

Our game could’ve been more like Kristian’s board game in the way that there are multiple areas where you pass through. One area on a boat, the next being the journey to your town through forest and around Clergy Reserves, the third would’ve been passing through the Revolution, and last would’ve been a town area where you “retire” in. “Retiring” being you settle in your home with a lot of money, and it would be the longest area where you could do the most in; buying a house, making loads of money, getting a job, etc.

The way it connects to BNA is that you come over as an immigrant and have to progress through the board, get a job, and make money. Our board should’ve been more connected to BNA but didn’t have time to change the board, because we didn’t do any work at home.

Thinking Core Competency

Creative Thinking

  • I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others

One of our group members came up with the idea of using “The Game of Life” and I & the others were able to help build off that idea to make what we made. The idea of “Game of Life” was created and I was able to shape the game around it since I knew most about the game. Some examples are; how the game works, what the careers should resemble, most of the tiles should be action tiles, and how far apart the Pay Days & Taxes should be.

Creative & Reflective Thinking

  • I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress my goals

Throughout the project I had to change some of the rules and background knowledge because of my teammates realizing it did not make sense due to our changes to the board game as it was being created. I had also asked my mum to proofread for any non-spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors which I took lightly. Another example being, when some group members asked me about certain aspects I had not thought about, I changed them accordingly, and made improvements.

Catapult – Reflection

Artifact

This is our catapult project that involved throwing a ball through the catapult as far as possible

Thinking

  • I can analyze evidence to make judgements

Explanation

By analyzing how a ball flies and what angle I could determine how to make the ball fly further and higher without going to high or too far without height.
