Metalwork Edublog

1-Ring Jewellery

In the class, we created rings. My two rings turned out FANTASTIC. I measured my fingers, cut and melted wax molds to fit the size, made a new mold outlying the ring shape, and finally shot some silver into the molds. My rings came out great

Unfortunately, I LOST ONE OF MY RINGS. Fortunately, my teacher understood and I did not lose marks for only having one ring. If I turned back time, I would definitely constantly check for my ring in the tumbler. Since I put my lost ring in the tumbler for a many days only to realize it was gone when I finally checked…. I would not leave my rings alone for that long next time I did something like this

I am very proud of being able to combine two designs– the original ring wax mold + a gecko wax mold that I managed to find! My rings turned out great.

2-Wall Art–The face of my cat

Another assignment we had was to make a wall art out of wires and welding. Welding is a technique that uses electricity to melt metal together quickly.

Well, I was able to create my wall art. It turned out ok, but there are many things I want to improve on. First of all, I succeeded in creating a good design. However, although I was able to make it though welding wires, the quality was lackluster. It pains me to say this, but…. The welding was inferior. Give my wall art a few hard shakes and one welded spot will come loose! I went back and forth from the welding and thinking its done only for things to fall apart.

If I were to do it again, I would definitely weld things better for sure. AND! I would make sure that my cat wouldn’t move so that the face wouldn’t be as tilted as it is…. No one seemed to notice that it was tilted compared to its design though.

I know I did just say the welding I did was horrid, but it was alright. It mostly held together at the end although there are still some flaws. But this design was really complex and I made things harder for myself by using wires that were so thin, the teacher thought it wasn’t possible to weld them. Perhaps I wasn’t so bad in welding and I just should have listened and used thicker wires. But the design I had in mind was complex enough that thing lines would look visually better. So, I have to praise myself for my work and my wired cat design.

3- CMC –Cat Logo. (for social media. @on0rbit and @lifestar053 on insta)

The CMC is a laser metal cutting machine. For this assignment, ,we had to design a shape for the CMC machine to cut out. We were allowed to trace images since not everyone is an artist. However, I really wanted to design something. So, I decided to design a logo for myself to cut out in metal with the CMC. I am really proud about my logo design! This part went excellently.

It took a long time to make, but I think I made all the right choices when making this. The only problem is that it took a long time.

There actually isn’t anything I would have done differently. One thing I wish I did better was the spraypainting part, but that only comes through skill and experience–not logic. I couldn’t have planned things better. This really shows how far I came in this class.

Earth Science 11 Reflection

Earth Science 11 Reflection

Critical Thinking

I compile and synthesize information to draw reasoned conclusions, such as when…

The Earth Science class were all asked what we thought would happen to the ocean.

This was all done in microsoft forms, but I saved my response.

Here is what I wrote (for this one specific question. There were 4 questions in total but its too long so I am only showing a response for one question):

Fossil fuels increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. They combine with H2O then become H2CO3. The H2CO3 separates into one H and one HCO3. That means there is a HCO3 and an extra H up for grabs- and the extra H ion combines with more CO3s-ones that aren’t from the fossil fuels. And the CO3s that are not from the fossil fuels are carbonate ions that organisms with shells need to build their shells!!

The HCO3 that is created from fossil fuel emissions combining with H2O is acidic– which makes the ocean more acidic. The more acidic the ocean it becomes, the more harder it is for things to live in the ocean. And if the ocean gets too acidic… things living in the ocean will start to die.

I compiled information from all the lessons we took and assignments we did before coming to this conclusion. I think this sufficiently proves that I am able to compile and synthesize information to draw reasoned conclusions.

Social Awareness and Responsibility

What

Because I know my actions can have a negative impact on (the environment, my peers, my family, etc.), I make sure that I… to help reduce any problems..

How

I observe my surroundings to reflect on what I can do to respect others. No matter what environment I am in or how my peers act–I strive to be a good person.

Evidence

There are some unnamed peers who act in a disrespectful way towards our teacher. However, I do not let this affect me and I act opposite from them.

Creative Thinking

Some skills I have developed to make my creative activities better are…

Time management. Time is of essence and pricier than gold. I make sure to take time to do my creative work and allocate enough time for other things in my life too. If I know that an assignment is due tomorrow but there is also a big creative project I need to finish-> such as the assignment Around the World…

First: I prioritize what really matters.

After that, I do work based on priority. I am rid of any guilt of not doing one assignment because I know I am using my time for work that matters more.

Core Competency goals for the Future

My goal (for my whole life) is to not use ai AT ALL. I do not really like ai other than using it for reasearch. Research is the ONLY thing I appreciate ai for, because research takes too long and it’s not using critical or creative thinking in my brain.

So, I am NOT going to use ai for anything other than researching resources. This is something that helps both my creative and critical thinking skills.

This is my main creative competencies goal

My Goal for the Future

Creative Competencies future goals, Critical Thinking too

Exploring Benford’s Law Using Logarithms

For my application of using Benford’s Law, I wanted to use data from Vancouver or BC. I wanted to see if my findings would be accurate to Benford’s law if I follow all the criteria that the Benford’s law article explained.

I decided to use population; and use a population census of munipincilities across BC and how it changed over the years. If I used only Vancouver, then there’d be too little variety. I also gathered data on population over the years instead of just the current population, since it would be great for getting more data and a more wide range of small population+large population.

Here are my results:

The dataset was too big to include in this edublog. You can see it in my excel sheet or the pdf of the data consensus.

Log leading digit.xlsx (only works for SD43 accounts. Contains the data consensus and the table with the data converted to only leading digits. Also contains the final table&chart)

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/data/statistics/people-population-community/population/municipal_census_pop_1921_2021.pdf (The pdf. Only has the consensus data)

The observed frequencies of my dataset was pretty close to Benford’s percentages. All the discrepancies were small and insignificant. Overall, I was able to confirm that if I gather a large data set with variety and a wide range from small to big numbers, Benford’s law will come into play.

There are some exceptions, of course. Benford’s law only applies on naturally occuring numbers and numbers that have a wide range, instead of having a common theme. And numbers that have a minimum or maximum limit do not follow Benford’s Law often because their range is restricted. Even then, some data-sets that have all the criteria for Benford’s law to come to play do not follow it. Due to this, I think that Benford’s Law is something that appears a lot, but is not a set rule.

However, although Benford’s Law doesn’t apply to everything, it can be used to double-check datasets that usually follow it. For example, it can be used with financial records. Benford’s Law is not a 100% correct, but financial records that dont closely follow it have a high chance of being fraud.

Benford’s Law works by using log10 because Log10 follows the logic that lower numbers appear more frequently.

On the logarithmatic scalebar (shown below), if you pick a random x position uniformly(which means that you don’t actually pick numbers randomly, you randomly pick numbers evenly, if that makes sense) on this number line, roughly 30% of the time the first digit of the number will be 1.

That is it for my findings and what I learned about Benford’s Law!

Final Choir Edublog

Your post will include images of a project you created, and a reflection on how you developed and demonstrated Core Competencies as you engaged in this learning.

In my journey as a choir member, I have found that reflecting on my personal experiences, such as past performances, enhances my well-being, particularly when

The reflections force me to look back and think what I felt from the concert and how it was good or bad. If I did not take the time to reflect on my concerts, there would be little to no learning on how I could improve my performance. I actually felt that I felt more confident and and made less mistakes due to my reflections. This is because when I notice something good about my performance, I get confident and when I notice something bad, I make effort to improve it.

I prioritize my vocal well-being by consistently sustaining a healthy and balanced vocal lifestyle, which includes

I take time to drink water whenever I can if I feel I need to hydrate. Sometimes my throat gets dry or gets “coarse”. I make the effort to drink water when my throat starts to feel that way, so that it does not affect my performance or hurt my throat. I make the effort to use techniques to make my voice sound loud instead of using my raw throat, and rest my voice when my throat needs it.

When facing challenging pieces or demanding rehearsals, I often look back on my personal journey in choir as a source of inspiration and resilience, especially when

When I feel nervous before or during a concert, I think back to how I did in the last concert often. Before the concert, I make sure to know exactly where I should be and where I should go, because I know from the past concerts that it is best to keep to myself and make sure I know what to do so that everything goes smoothly. I knew what to pay attention to in order for things to go well; it is the same for during the concert. This is all due to thinking back to my previous concerts that I know what I should do and how.

Parabola-Math Edublog

Parent Equation:

My equation:

My Equation and the Parent Equation together: (Parent equation= blue, My Equation = red)

Equation template:

y = a(x-h)+k

If a is negative, the parabola is upside down. If a is between 0 and 1 (fraction/decimal), the parabola is wide. If a is over 1, then the parabola is narrow.

If h is positive, the vertex moves right as much as h. If h is negative, the vertex moves left as much as h.

If k is positive, the vertex moves up as much as k. If k is negative, the vertex moves down as much as k.

In my equation, a is positive and between 0 & 1. This means that the parabola is upright and wider than the parent equation. The h is positive as shown in the equation: (x-h) -> (x- [6]) -> (x-6). The h is positive and the number 6, which means that the vertex moves right by 6. The k is negative and the number 7, which means that the vertex moves down by 7.

English First Peoples 11 Reflection

My Artifact:

I am proud of the presentation about Eli, a character from Green Grass Running Water. This is because I demonstrated my ability to create and communicate. This assignment had helped me a lot in growing my communication skills, both my writing and speaking skills infact. The reason is that I first struggled on finding out what or how to say the idea I had in my head; even when I wrote something down, it was not effective in getting my idea across. I struggled and then I overcame that struggle. Eventually, my communication skills( my writing and speaking skills) improved through this assignment. Communication is crucial in reconciliation and improving my communication skills was exactly what I needed to contribute to the cause.

Core Competencies Reflection

I had an experience of communication in this assignment. Not only did I work on my communication skills, but I experienced communication within my group as well. This assignment had helped me a lot in growing my communication skills, both my writing and speaking skills, since the group I was in focused on communication. It was not perfect communication, but me and my group put in effort to communicate what we are working on and what to do from there on. This helped in creating the presentation together, as nothing was missing from it and I was pretty satisfied with the end result as well.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

(I made this before but I didn’t save and I had to do it again and I really didnt want to do this ;-;)

I support others to get them to share their voice and perspectives. I used this skill in leadership class when we made as group discussion in leadership class. No one in the group was keen on participating in the discussion, I started by suggesting some ideas we could think about. I asked questions and other people followed my example. This is both a skill and quality that I posses, because I am encouraging and I have the skill to start a conversation or other activities in a group.

A leadership quality I would like to develop is decisiveness. I am always uncertain in many areas and it takes time for me to choose what to say or go in detail about a topic, because I have not made up my mind. An example of this is when choosing clubs to go into, I never knew what to do and could not choose a club to go into for the school year. One leadership skill I would like to develop is being able to stay consistent. I have never consistently stayed in a leader role nor have I consistently stayed on a decision very often. One example is when I decided to go into fencing club; I thought that I would be in this club for the rest of the year, but I ended up not signing up for the club in the end.

I can encourage others to share their voice and value diverse perspectives. I was able to do this skill in leadership class when we made as group discussion in leadership class. Seeing how everyone was a little hesitant in participating in the discussion, I started it by suggesting some ideas we could think& discuss about. I asked some questions and other people started to follow along.

SDTRG Reflection (D&D)

In this class, I portrayed my creative thinking by trying new things and taking risks by making my character a class with many additional options and although it was hard at first, I was able to exercise my creative thinking by taking the risk, the harder path. I showed collaboration in this class by sharing information and working with my group to help each other create our own D&D characters.

Collaboration was shown not only in creating characters with my group; this was also portrayed when I worked with my group to create a full D&D adventure. I was the one to always check the finer details and make sure nothing is missing. I double-checked, edited, and figured out what was done and what wasn’t.

Communication is demonstrated throught my efforts to portray what I want to do in the campaign. If anyone cannot understand my actions, I put in effort to explain what I want to do in different ways and try to find out the reason my explanation was not communicated well.

Lab 20c Core Competency

Titration is a technique used in labs to determine the molarity of substances. In this lab, we used it to find the molarity of HCl, by balancing it with NaOH. The goal was to find the point when there is an equal amount of acid and base. In order to find this point, we put in Phenolpthalein, which visualizes it and makes the solution turn a very pale pink at this point. However, if the point is not reached or overshot, the solution will instead be clear or vibrant hot pink.

During this lab, I was able to demonstrate communication skills with my two partners for the lab. We shared what we understood about the procedure we pre-read; to make sure that we did not miss anything in order to follow the correct procedures. In the first lab, we poured carefully and started to use half drops of the base; we did this because this was part of the procedures. If we had not done this, disaster would happen; one drop can turn a solution from light to dark magenta and we had seen this happen before. After we finished the lab, we communicated to put away the materials by asking questions when we didn’t know where something went and making sure that everything was returned to their designated spot.

This shows our group’s collaborative skills and communication skills, being able to work together in order to successfully complete the lab.

Here is a photo of the first experiment, where we put one drop in and the solution changed to dark pink:
