Metalwork Edu-Blog Post Assignment

For the metal rose project in Art Metal 12, we were assigned to create a vase for our rose. My idea was very simple consisting of a metal tube for the vase’s body, holes in the top to keep the rose in place, and a bigger bottom piece for stability. After braising a metal nut to my top piece, I used the angle grinder to flatten the top. However, I accidentally grinded too much and smoothened out the edges which I did not want. In order to achieve sharper edges, I decided to tack the perimeter of the top using electric welding, making sure to tack enough so that I could grind it down after into my desired design. I was able to successfully grind down the tacks I made and achieve my goal of sharper edges. If I could go back and change anything, I would have been more careful when grinding my vase to avoid having to do all that extra work. Overall, even though I am not the fondest of my design (my parents like it so that’s all that matters), I am proud of the welds that I did at the base of my vase as it took a lot of maneuvering the torch and angle grinding. I also think it is important to note that Mr. Peterson himself photographed me welding for the yearbook, quickly after recognizing the staggering welds I did on my vase.
