Music Monday “LAND” Map Assignment: Self-Assessment

Curricular Response

I used the image of a stop sign on the East Coast to represent a message to the Europeans not to enter and stop before they colonize Turtle Island. As well, the quote “Chris Columbus gets credit for discovery,” talks about the colonizers overlooking the people who owned the land and claiming it for themselves. The meaning of my assignment was to present how indigenous people’s lives were negatively altered by European settlers.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

It was easy for me to select words and images to create meaning on my map because I knew I wanted to focus on the impact of colonization. The image of a flag reminded me of the countries planting flags on the moon, as if they could just claim property over something that easily. Europeans settled the same way, not thinking of the impacts nor people on the land, and took it and the resources for themselves to manipulate. I thought about that and the reservations and decided the binary opposites “natural, artificial” and “freedom, controlled,” were broad but clear enough to suggest that colonization was like a prison. Titling it was simple because the settlers were making another Europe, and treating it like the continent always belonged to them.

Art Independent Studies 12 Exploring and Creating Reflection

“Hands of Flame” by Isabella Banco

This composition demonstrates exploring and creating, as I’ve applied many new, researched techniques with unfamiliar mediums to execute this concept. Oil paints are unfamiliar, however I dedicated much of my semester to learning color application. None of my works were similar, but this especially stands out from the others because I remained within one side of the color wheel and worked dark to light with minimal layering to enhance brightness. Overall, this painting required much research and exploration.

Textiles Arts and Crafts Core Competency Reflection

We were assigned to sew a drawstring bag in Textiles Arts and Crafts.

I demonstrated communication in this assignment by consistently sharing my progress with my teacher, and asking for assistance from peers or my teacher when necessary. There was a written reflection component to this assignment where I shared how I intend to use this project and what I overcame or accomplished.
I ran into the issue of the thread making the fabric bunch or stretch too tight, so I used critical thinking to decide I needed to begin sewing a centimetre from the top as to prevent this. The drawstring bag had several pages of specific instructions to follow.
Personal awareness is another core competency I demonstrated in this assignment, as I was required to communicate my process, overcome issues alone or with the help of others, and manage my time to complete this project to criteria.

Brain Disorder Story Assignment Reflection

I demonstrated the core competencies creative thinking, critical thinking, and communication in this project. The assignment was to create a story line of a mental disorder, which required creative thinking to turn the written content into images. I used critical thinking to research and put together all my information to fit the criteria and support the story I created. Communication helped me get clarification and work with peers to see how to expand my ideas and edit my work.

Textiles Arts and Crafts Core Competency Self Assessment

Creative Thinking

I demonstrated my understanding of creative thinking by designing and altering the skull based on existing designs, as well as creating the best method to make the skull pop. I decided that 3D tape would make the design come to life and have a dramatic result. To continue thinking creatively, I can use my own designs consistently and try new materials. To feel creatively inspired, I want to ensure I do projects I take interest in, and incorporate things I enjoy with projects I don’t share the same level of interest. I’ll ensure I use many resources to complete my projects and get new, unexpected ideas.

Research Assignment Reflection

I displayed the core competencies communication, collaboration, and personal awareness and responsibility. In our research assignment, we organized into groups and had discussions about the best way to show our ideas, make compromises, and meet expectations. When we were confused or wanted to know if we were on the right track, my group and I would talk to our teacher and seek critiques. Together, we collaborated on ideas and encouraged each other to share thoughts and changes we had. I ensured I completed a fair share of my own work and helped the others around me.

Studio Art 11- Independent Studies Core Competencies – Communication

Archery (digital) by Isabella Banco

This piece was done over the course of a few weeks in class, with the advice and help from my teacher, and other students. By communicating with my peers and consistently re-evaluating, I learned how to use a digital art program and find the right lighting for this original piece. Other artists were very helpful with their critiques and advice on colors, proportion, lighting, logistics, etcetera. I ensured to take into account advice and was consistently learning in this new art form.

Core Competency Reflection – Pre-Calc 11

Pros For Group Work:

-Get more done quicker

-Have peers to ask questions

-Work through problems with groups

-Strong communication

Cons For Group Work:

-Depend on others in order to complete the project on time

-Depend on group members to do the work right and present well together

One of the ways I ensured my group is clear on the common purpose was to communicate. Constant communication helped us figure out what worked best for each person and allowed us to set goals for our achievements, such as deadlines and what information needed to be covered.

I knew the group was working well together when I heard/saw the members of my group working together and helping answer each other’s questions. When someone was confused, a member always made information clear and everyone would start contributing to check if thing’s were done right and thoroughly.

If I noticed someone looked confused or stressed that was a sign that my group needed help and we could get support by asking one another questions or making clarifications with the teacher. If we needed more assistance or help staying on track, we could work at separate tables to stay on track.

Examples of where I communicated clearly and purposefully can be seen in the second PowerPoint slide where I ensured to clarify with the group that it contained the crucial things about restrictions.

What did you I learn about working with a group from this semester that you will carry into your next group experience?

Getting things done is much faster when I try to complete most of it immediately and add detail later. Splitting up the work, having group members that are good workers, and people I get along with make the process faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Art Studio Core Competencies Reflection

Communication

Painting done by myself and Amber for the Maker Space.

A group of students, including myself, were assigned to created multiple pieces for the new Maker Space. This assignment required work similar to what is done in university, where several of us organized, planned, and executed an overall theme that met a list of requirements. We spent a couple weeks communicating ideas, then presented our plans to several teachers and took into account all recommendations and changes. The project took a lot of compromising and communicating to achieve the overall goal, which helped me learn how to work within a large group and overcome the obstacles that come with it.

Spanish 11 Core Competencies Reflection

Collaborating

Valentine’s Poem I did in Spanish 11 at the start of the semester.

I actively used the core competency Communication in my Valentine’s Poem by asking my teacher questions for

clarification on the assignment. I missed the day the poem was assigned, and met with my teacher during lunch to ask

for directions and to have my work checked. By getting assistance, I understood my task enough to receive a 10/10 on

the project, which was a good way to start my semester. When I saw my success after getting help from classmates and

my teacher, taking their comments and constructive criticism, I concluded that I could use others for help me continue

to succeed in Spanish 11.
