Earthquake Preparedness

What causes earthquakes?

The world we live on is built on giant areas called tectonic plates. These plates are buried deep under the ground and are responsible for earthquakes. Earthquakes are caused when two tectonic plates shift together they cause the earth around them to tremor.

How do earthquakes effect people/the environment?

Earthquakes can be devastating to entire countries effecting the economy, killing large amounts of the population, and destroying large cities important to keeping the country’s infrastructure. Besides destroying roads and buildings, earthquakes can also cause tsunamis (large and destructive waves) to ripple out across the ocean and destroy neighboring countries.

How do I prepare for earthquakes?

Earthquakes cannot be fully prevented but, you can be prepared for one. Earthquake kits are easy to make and require low maintenance. To make these kits you require water (bottled and changed out when required), shelter (this could be as small as a blanket to as big as a tent), and food (packaged military food is a great option). Other optional items are medical supplies, entertainment/comfort items (like chocolate or a handheld music device), and many others I’m too lazy to name. Another way people prepare for earthquakes is by building earthquake supports on large buildings like apartments. You can see on the photo below that this building in turkey was not built properly and ended up being destroyed in the quake.

Core competency reflection

I used Critical Thinking to research about earthquakes, what they do, and how to prepare for them.

Math 11 Foundations Stats Unit Self Assessment

Something I learned in this unit was how to use a graphing calculator. I always wondered how they worked and it was cool to learn all of the buttons, functions, and what they did.

Something I understood well was the z = (x-μ)/σ equation. It was fast and easy to learn because of all the equations I learned in pre calc and previous math courses.

I would like to work on completely finishing all of my homework on time.

 Curricular Competencies Reflection (creative thinking)

For this assignment I used creative thinking to describe my Imagery write. I made sure to include all of the five senses, as well as intricately describing my surroundings. This wasn’t very challenging for me as I enjoy writing like that. (when I’m in the mood)

Japanese Canadian Internment Paragraph Assignment

By Kieran McGivern

I don’t support the idea of putting Japanese Canadians into the internment camps. I don’t believe they should be put there just because they are the same race as the Japanese who attacked pearl harbor. These are normal, kind people that are being brought to the camps without any proper evidence to be taken away or deported. Another reason why I don’t support these interment camps is because the lack of people will cause the economy to struggle. Less people to work means less money flowing through the community’s economy. I believe these camps are a mistake and are only going to worsen the situations we are currently facing.

Core CompetencyJapanese-Canadian Internment & Paragraph

I did ask and respond to questions to be an active and supportive listener.

I worked with others to achieve a goal.

I now understand that my identity is made up of many interconnected elements of Japanese-Canadian internment..

I now understand what is important to me and I can explain my values.

I demonstrated my collaboration skills while working with my partner to achieve a goal by using my communication skills and listening skills as well as doing my share of the work. I also used constructive criticism to help my peer finish sentences and use proper spelling.

My model town

Name of the town: Babatunde town
Company name: Babatunde Cloth Company
Resources available: Cloth, Water, Wheat, potatoes, and Carrots
Elements of the town: Catholic church, Manor, lake, Babatunde Farm (four course crop rotation)/ Babatunde farm house, town, houses, shacks, workhouse/factory
Population: 227
Explanation/brief history: Babatunde town was founded by Master Babatunde after he discovered a fortune left for him by a deceased relative. He founded the town in 1745 in a meadow he found somewhere in east England and named it after himself aswell as the cloth factory he constructed. After he had finished the walls (which cost most of his money due to their massive size) he opened the town up to others to populate it. Within the year Babatunde lost the town to the bank for not paying his debt from borrowing extra money. Babatunde then became a farmer and worked to pay of his debt for the rest of his life!

Media fluency reflection

The town was quite easy to make. I used ROLL FOR FANTASY to create it and built from scratch. I really didn’t have an idea so I just made a lake and built around it. I realized in the end that I had placed the shacks in the spots where I should have put crops, but it still looks cool. As you can see I also ended up making the manner a weird maze of house blocks and was to lazy to remake it. I’m really happy with my church design (mid top) and the walls including my water door and front entrance. i tried to include the church and For course crop rotation to make it seem more realistic. I could have used Minecraft to create this town but this computer hates minecraft for some reason.
