English 11 Poetry Reflection

By: Matthew Gottschling

My Poem About Blueberries

Blueberries, among the best superfoods

Antioxidants and numerous health benefits all tightly packaged inside

Commingling with the tasty tantalizing and tranquilizing tangy punch

Through the roof nutritional value delivers its magic

The moment its thin sturdy wall bursts

No longer holding back

The delightful jumbo jelly-like juiciness it withholds

The reveal is the next appeal,

The tingles of the old ripe wrinkles, or

The young sturdy and stiff that mingles

With the handful of ripe and unripe, the dynamic duo

Inseparable like day and night

Trust in the blueberries, they are always right

No disappointment, they serve to delight

A blueberry will always treat you right

Curricular Competencies Reflection

The purpose of this poem was to help visualize the textures and taste of blueberries as well as its uses. My intended audience was my English teacher Ms. Khokhar. I created this poem with the intention of it being personal to me as blueberries are my favorite fruit and integrating poetic devices in my own way. To make this poem engaging, I used adjectives as well as some poetic devices to thoroughly describe the fruit and its uses to make it appealing to the reader. I used imagery to help visualize a person eating a blueberry and the textures and flavors it has.

Creative Thinking Core Competency Reflection

I chose to write about blueberries because it is delicious and healthy and its distinct features are easy to describe to the audience. I developed my own ideas about the structure of the poem and the content talking about a few aspects of blueberries that make it such a likeable fruit by imagining the taste and texture of the fruit. The innovative part about my poem would be my use of a pun, repetition and other poetic devices to bring the poem to life. I would improve on the flow of my poem because I think I could’ve integrated my poetic devices more smoothly. To me it seems like I didn’t transition my ideas, so I would pay attention to that next time to make it an easier read.
