Core Competency Self-Assessment

Personal Social – Collaboration

Our subject, the Fetal pig.

I demonstrated collaboration with my partner Jared in the fetal pig lab by working together to find the necessary structures

assigning tasks to increase efficiency. We would give each other breaks if someone had become nauseated by the chemical smell

emanating from the pig and would check each other’s hypothesis on where specific structures were located. For example I pried

open the jaw as my partner was disturbed by the cracking sounds it made. He would wash the pig as I preferred not to. We worked

together to cover for each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This was a truly challenging lab and I’m glad I had Jared as a partner

to help me explore the anatomy of the pig fetus.

Core Competency Self Assessment

In my Spanish 9 and 10 review dialogue I demonstrated collaboration by working together with my group to put together a script that demonstrated the concepts earlier Spanish units. Some goals have for the next collaboration project are having everyone in the group contribute to the script more equally as well as practicing a few time with the entire group before presenting I also asked them to look over the script yet we lost marks for lack of accents. I’ll have to make sure it’s more of a group effort.

Death of a Salesman Presentation

My Power Point Presentation

Collaboration

One of the ways I ensured my group was clear on the common purpose is to discuss ideas with my helpful group members and make sure they are on track. I had each of them read out their journal entries to gather ideas on possible subjects for out presentation.

Critical and Reflective Thinking

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this assignment was when I used both evidence from the play and subjects Mr. Wallace talked about in class to formulate some possible reasons behind Willy to Linda mending her stockings.

Communication

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in how I attempted to talk more clearly and with less rigidity than my last presentation. I made eye-contact with the teacher and didn’t quote my script exactly.

Goals

One thing I need to work on is making sure we have everything ready before the date and improving communication between group members. The delegation of the works cited happened later than I hoped for.

Core Competency Self Assessment – Spanish 10/11 Presentation

Communication

Core Competancy Reflection

Communication

This was a presentation with the goal of constructing a linear conversation using vocab from unit 5 with a partner. I understood and shared information about this topic in a clear, organized way by speaking clearly, slowly and with adequate volume in from of my audience.

Collaboration

I worked with others to achieve a goal by collaborating with my group member Marco to write the script using correct vocab words. I made sure we practiced preforming for weeks before our presentation day, so we were well prepared

Creative Thinking

I can form new ideas to create new things. I demonstrated this by creating a Spanish story about going to the book store and inquiring about my friend Marco’s keen interest in cat. I had seen so many boring presentations about vocab words with no story but I wanted to jazz it up a bit.

Physical Geography Core Competency Reflection

Collaborating

My group and I worked on a project identifying the need of Somalia Puntland for RUTF packets in Geography 12 class. While gathering information for our project our sources were scattered and one page never had an abundance of information. A problem was arising; instead of a cohesive whole, our project was culminating into a messy pile of facts. I felt I had to take action. I collaborated with Mrs. Razzel to determine an essay style format to our project would be best. I divided it into an intro with our thesis statement and roadmap and then divided our culminative research into groups based on subject with color-coding. Then I worked with our group to assign each person a manageable workload. The effort it took to organize this was well worth it. Later on in our project I did the same with the works cited to make sure it got done in time. One thing I could have improved on was a miscommunication with one of my group members. He had misunderstood what I assigned to him and I didn’t think to check over his work until it was too late.

Ethical Judgement

Our group determined that Somlia Puntland was in dire need of foreign aid and should be supported by the Move for Mana effort. We decided this based on the impact of natural disasters, the economy, standard of living, corruption, political factors and the responsibility of Canadians. We also analyzed the future potential of the worsening of conditions based on predictions. Once I had seen the other presentations, I determined that Angola was in more need of help (despite our superior presentation). Puntland was in close second. I also felt that although Syria is also in great need, RUTF packets are not the best fit for their situation. The conflict occurring there would prevent distribution and would only be effective if accompanied by military intervention. As for future growth in my skills in ethical judgement, I would need to analyze more situations and practice the process more as well as look to more perspectives for input.

Physical Geography Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication

Presentation Section of assignment

I chose my Movement in the Earth project for this assignment. I demonstrated communication in this project by presenting the topic in a clear – easy to follow along format. My partner and I agreed to downsize the information on the PowerPoint. Often, students put too much up for someone to read and the presentation becomes boring and unengaging, not the ideal conditions for learning. Thus, we only put down key points essential for their understanding. We also tried to go “off” the script as much as possible and talk in a more conversative manner. This can help draw the attention of the audience and communicate ideas in a clear manner. Included at the end of the presentation was a video of our volcano, Krakatau just before the 2018 eruption. This is to communicate the size and texture of the volcano, as well as the nature of volcanic gases and pyroclastic flow. I can improve on my communication skills by talking to my partner about the overall length and content of the presentation.

We demonstrated Patterns and Trends by finding out the source of eruptions, figuring out what makes these volcanoes tick. We took into account convection currents in the mantle and how they lead to plate movement (also plate collision). We found the pattern that volcanoes often form at subduction plate boundaries. I also found that most cinder cones tend to produce smaller eruptions and are usually not the most dangerous type.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

Is history the story told by the Winners?

History. Is it written by the Winners? This depends on where you are learning history.

While I was learning about the Russian Revolution, I’ve noticed the fairly unbiased nature in how it’s taught. This, I’m sure is from hours of curation and hard work on my teacher’s part. If their is any bias, it would be against Bolshevik Russia. If we consider that the Bolsheviks ‘won’ the revolution as the most successful political party, I can conclude that my education was not written by the ‘winners’. The question goes deeper than that though. If I was a student studying the Russian Revolution in Russia today, my education would surely be different. I would be taught different things. Maybe they would frame Lenin in a better light; communism too, would be shown as an improvement over earlier systems. I would not know any better. I can also see other examples where history is written by the winners.

The history of the residential schools in Canada is currently being rewritten as new information is coming out. Canada was the Winner. Yet the entire truth is not known. History is never the ‘essential truth’. No matter what source you draw from there will be biases. The French experience of the Treaty of Versailles is different than the German one. History isn’t just written by the winners, each nation will have its own history, or set of stories that explain their perspective. That’s all History is. Not a guarantee of Truth. Simply a collection of stories with a specific narrative.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

In this assignment I analyzed my experiences learning about the Russian Revolution in History 12 and determined that my education was not influenced by the Winners of the Conflict, the Bolsheviks. I also analyzed my learning of the Treaty of Versailles and concluded that different Nations would have differed views on how history is taught.

Core Competency Goals

Goals

I will prepare for my future by: doing some volunteer work during the school year to prepare for my future. I have avoided this so far in my year. Perhaps I will find a friend to do it with my so I keep motivation.

I will develop my self dependency by finding a job of some kind – perhaps tutoring, to expand my independence. Another one I have avoided. I peer tutored for two semesters so I believe I can carry over some of the skills I learned there.

Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle include… taking time to care for my mental health and not being overly pessimistic. I am often very critical of myself. I notice so many things I’m doing wrong and get overwhelmed by it emotionally. I should take a break once in a while.

Animal Investigation Labs: Self Assessment

Curricular Response

During my dissection work in Biology 11 I learned about the trends cephalization and advances in digestive tracts the more advanced an organism is. Sponges for example, have no digestive tract, wheras Planaria have a simple 2-way tract. Earthworms have a 1- way digestive tract (most of their body is dedicated to this), a major advancement. Cephalization (increased nerve density in the head) was also a trend. Sponges have no real nervous system, and earthworms have a pair of ganglia (primitive brain). More elaborate means of movement was also observed. Sponges and coral are primarily sessile, worms ungulate and squid use a water jet to propel themselves. Limbs become more elaborate as well. Shrimp have 3 types of specialized legs.

Core Competency Self Assessment

I am the most proud of the shrimp lab because I got to eat it afterwards. I had volunteered to eat the head the week before (no idea why). It tasted like shrimp but with more flavours. Not flavours I expected. Or wanted. I had problems finding some of the organs on the animals. This includes the heart of the squid and the ganglia of the earthworm. I solved these problems by referring to the diagram in my notes. I also had a hard time getting the mussel open with the razor blade (thin gap). I disliked the squid dissection because I appreciate Cephalopods and didn’t want to tear one apart. I pushed through this though.
