Linear and Non- Linear Equations

Non-linear

Equation : y=2x ( x is an exponent)

This graph is not a linear equation. I can tell from this graph because it demonstrates a curve and bent line not a straight line. I can tell from the equation because it includes a exponent in the linear equation.

Linear Graph

Equation : 2x-3y = 12
This graph is a linear equation. I can tell from this graph because it indicates a straight line and not a curve line. I can tell from the equation because it has a form of Ax + By = C in the equation.

Non-Linear

Linear Graph

Equation : x2+y2 = 16 (2 is an exponent)

This graph is not a linear equation. I can tell from this graph because it demonstrates a curve and drawn as a circle not a straight line. I can tell from the equation because it includes a exponent in the linear equation of “x” and “y”.

Equation: x = 4

This graph is a linear equation. I can tell from this graph because it shows a straight line along the graph. I can tell from the equation because it has a form of Ax + By = C in the equation. As it demonstrates only the x axis in the linear graph.

Self-Assessment

I explored mathematical ideas using technology when I was creating and identifying linear or non-linear graphs. By exploring different varieties of equations onto the graph. I analyzed data and used criteria to draw conclusions when I was analyzing how I can tell if its a linear or not linear equation by looking at the linear equation. I justified my conclusions with evidenced when I was reading the graph by looking at my notes from previous lessons and homework assignments to help answer the equation.
