Compare and Contrast Music

This assignment was to compare and contrast two songs called, “Wreck Beach/Totem Park,” The Zolas and “Caribou Ghosts and Untold Stories,” Leanne Simpson.

  1. Reflect on how these songs contribute to making the community or natural world a better place and identify how the lyrics actions call others to action and can work to make positive change. 

These songs showcase the historical events on Indigenous People and the affects on their community and culture. Demonstrates important events and knowledge through the tone of music. The lyrics show actions towards their feelings and emotions due to their past experiences.

  1. How do these songs represent that something is unfair? What is that “something”? Explain.

These songs represent unfair respect and treatment towards Indigenous People. That “something” illustrates their worth as an individual, culture, identity, issues, and view-points.

  1. What emotions do these songs generate for you? Compare your emotions between each song. Which one is more compelling? And why?

The song generates negative emotions based off unburden stories and issues based off past experiences. Each song showcase a timeline of different perspectives in comparison with Indigenous People. The ” Caribou Ghosts and Untold Stories” was more compelling based off the chosen of words with more impact of discourage and confided meaning.

  1. What is important to each of the singers? What is the message they are trying to convey?

Leanne Simpson conveys her experiences in reality of mentally and physically as an Indigenous woman. The Zolas conveys their view point as settlers in Indigenous Territory. Including the affects on their land, family and culture.

  1. Using one of your similarities and differences (not the example one given), discuss in a short paragraph (6-10 sentences) how music can convey different perspectives on the same cause?

Music can convey different perspective based off the artist or artists. Their choice of words and tone reflect on their own view-point and exposures to what is around them. Demonstrates their personal meaning that is distinctive in their lives. The lyrics of the song expresses the artist’s emotions and feeling through poetic devices or lyrical meaning. The music of the song has differences towards the listener and their mind-set. Artist write songs that are different from other artist. The Zolas quoted, ” I’ll sit on the beach till they put me in cuffs.” It conveys as an illustration of protesting their rights and freedom. Simpson states, “Meet me at underpass, rebellion is on our way,” showcases authority through hiding as a rebellion.
