Drawing and Painting 11/12 CC Reflection

Communication: Throughout the art course I have been communicating through visuals on my feelings and emotions, using images instead of words. Specifically this art piece has a skull which means how tired and fatigued a person can be as well as their inner feelings of wanting to scream and let it all out. This is a piece I completed that has been an inner feeling I’ve wanted to create for the longest time but could not find the images to properly depict this feeling.

Art Studio CC Reflection Post

Communication CC

“I share my ideas and try to connect them with others ideas.”

During this art course I have been dedicating my time in class to making a portfolio for post secondary as a plan b. I have two art classes in the day where I can to work on and complete each portfolio piece. With majority of the art I have created, I try to incorporate a meaning behind each piece, where I communicate how I feel and what others may relate to. One piece I did where I feel it communicates a lot is a pencil drawing with some colour incorporated in it where there is a woman with a drape on her lower half holding a blade to her arm with a needle and thread hanging out of the same arm. It represent the healing stage an individual can be going through but also receives new pain.

Thinking CC

“ I can use my imagination to get new ideas of my own, or build on others ideas, or combine other peoples ideas in new ways”

While art projects are for the most part an individuals activity, there is also a sense of collaboration in a way. The thought process for an art work can be created by a group, thought of singularly, or an inspired piece. One art piece I created was a pencil drawing with alternating lines across the face which was actually two people combined into one filling in the gaps. This art piece can have two meanings behind it depending on the viewer. It may be a person that is your other half, compliments you and makes you whole. The other meaning which I resonate with more and the meaning that behind the piece when I created was struggling to choose who you want to be displayed as to the outside world, almost like the struggle of two personalities and you need to choose if you want to be yourself, or how you think people will actually like you.

Personal and Social CC

“ I can be focused and determined”

Painting is a fun yet challenging art medium which requires a lot of patience and determination. Mixing to achieve the desired or matching colour takes a lot of patience, painting within the lines and placement of the subject in the canvas. Painting usually takes the longest time for me because of these challenges of mixing paint and then not being satisfied with the placement, but this project had a lot of my focus because I was determined to finish it. The meaning behind this piece was to break out of your comfort zone or in this case your own bubble.

Brain Disorder Reflection

Core competencies I demonstrated while completing this project were collaboration and communication. For collaboration I worked with others to achieve my goal and did my share in completing the project helping with researching information and drawing the images, taking on the responsibility in making sure my partner and myself would not fail. In the communication core competency, i had to communicate with my partner to see what brain disorder we wanted to do research on and what parts of research each of us wanted to tackle.

Core Competency Goals

As an active listener, I notice that..

I try to interact and share my ideas with the people around me sharing my thoughts and opinions on the subject at hand showing I am collaborating and engaged rather than bored and uninterested with the subject. I find if I am instructed to listen to the speakers- example in a group discussion, I am actively listening to their ideas and opinions and add on to the topic they are communicating with the other members and myself.

Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle include..

Going to the gym, completing works of art that reflect my feelings when homework becomes overwhelming. When I feel burnt out and unmotivated to complete my homework, I take a step back and perform some physical activities or as a substitute if I am physically unwell, is to perform calming activities like drawing and listening to music. These events keep me balanced by allowing myself to distance from things that burn me out, wasting my time being unmotivated to complete the work takes more time out of my day rather than be stepping back, completing another task and eventually come back to what may be considered the more important task.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…

My artwork. Each piece of artwork I create, I try to communicate the emotions and thoughts that have been with me long term, not only trying to communicate what I feel, I try and create pieces that other individuals could relate with as well. If they struggle to express what they are feeling into words, I try to help them identify their feelings in an image; some people have a difficult time trying to identify their emotions and then put them into words.

Art: Drawing and Painting

2/3 Independent Post Secondary Compositions.

Core Competency:

Throughout this art course I completed 3 independent art pieces to contribute to my art portfolio that can possibly be presented to universities or colleges for my future career. The core competency I know I mostly applied myself to is communication. Each composition I rendered what I was feeling, the message I was trying to get across, and to demonstrate my skill level as a self-taught artist. I communicated clearly, the feeling of being numb, alone, broken, exceptionally well, and got my ideas out on the canvas or paper exactly how I visualized it.

Final Independent Composition

Core Competency Reflection:

I think I completed this art composition, applying certain aspects from each core competency, having to think creatively painting something I have never jumped into, thinking critically using the supplies and knowledge I’m given to overcome barriers that I have stumbled on when completing the piece, social awareness taking into consideration what viewers may find pleasing to the eye while rendering something myself would like to paint. The core competency that I feel I mostly applied myself to was thinking communication; I communicated the feeling of what I visualize as peace, calm, quiet into life, using nature to represent the naturalness of something left alone, and untouched.

Animal Investigation Labs: Self Assessment

Photo from my favourite lab: Squid Lab

Curricular Response

Completing multiple dissections on different specimens allowed me to understand the diversity and changes in species, having appendages with interesting functions, having more of one internal organ, etc. After dissecting two squid it gave me and other students a more entertaining way of learning it’s anatomy by removing its appendages and trying to figure out what the weird appearing internal organs were, finding out that’s how you determine the specimens gender. Dissecting the squid and other species gave me a way to stay intrigued in the subject more rather than dozing off, it was a hands on learning experience providing a fun yet messy way for us students to learn. The lab was nourishing both educationally and physically.

Core Competency Self Assessment

The lab during the Life Science 11 course that I found most accomplishing was our squid dissection. I am proud of my decision on dissecting two squids because it allowed me to repeat incisions, and try to dissect one better than the other. I am proud of this lab because I made clean cuts, I was able to extract parts of the squid whole without breaking anything, it was a larger subject giving us more of an enjoyable dissection to do, especially eating the finished product. Challenges that I faced with this dissection was left at a minimum, the only struggle that I really felt with this dissection was to catch up with other students, as they were dissecting one squid and I had been dissecting two- a mental challenge when completing this lab was to restrain myself from throwing up, as brown liquids oozed from the squids head. Strategies I used to overcome these challenges was to keep going, complete the lab and wait for the finished product as I knew the finished product would be more visually appealing than the process halfway, also thinking about squid being a food I eat frequently, calamari, thinking of how squid is prepared. This lab was one of the most enjoyable things I completed during this course aside from me and my groups past projects discussing herpes, this was an independent, entertaining, insightful lab and I hope I can apply this knowledge to things that come my way in the future as I become an adult and am left to be more independent, and hope future students find this lab as entertaining as I did.

English 11 Poetry Reflection

My poem

This is a poem I created about my favourite vegetable.

Curricular Competency Reflection

A) What is the overall purpose of this poem?

The purpose of this poem is to showcase what my favourite vegetable is, and to show the favourite form this vegetable can take that is personally my favourite. It discusses the appearance, taste, and feel of the potato while causing potential viewers to feel hunger.

B) Who did you have in mind as your intended audience for this poem?

The intended audience for this analysis and poem are my peers and teachers. I hope to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding that I have obtained so far through my high school career, and hope to receive some constructive criticism from those who read this analysis and poem helping me become a better English student.

C) What elements of this poem are personal or related to you?

This poem relates to me because it is my favourite vegetable, writing about what I taste, feel, and the way the subject is prepared prior to serving.

D) How did you plan, develop, and create this poem to be engaging?

To make this poem more engaging I added different poetic devices to cause a blend within the words rather than throwing them at the viewer.

E) How did you use imagery (different sense) in your poem?

Within this poem taste, feel, appearance was involved and the beginning stage of the potato while causing readers to visualize what the potato’s finished product possibly looked like, tasted like, and felt like.

Creative Thinking Core Competency Reflection

A) How did you choose the topic for your poem?

The decision to create a poem about potatoes concluded with the the frequent consumption of eating potatoes, while never getting tired of the taste.

B) How did you form or develop your own original ideas to create the poem?

After reading all of Pablo Nerudas’ poems about the onion, artichoke, and tomato numerous times- it gave me the idea to make a poem about a potato. Even though we were given the ability to write about something other than our favourite vegetable and something more sentimental, trying to capture the essence of a potato was the overall goal upon completion of this poem.

C) What strategies helped to stimulate your imagination?

Strategies to boost my imagination was to close my eyes, and focus on the subject without the sense we use most being sight. Thinking of the taste, and feel without having the subject in my hand caused me to be more mindful, and narrow my thoughts in to depict the feel and taste more than the appearance, giving me the ability to create a more vivid image of what I wanted viewers to focus on more.

D) What is innovative about your poem?

My poem brings a new subject to the table being about potatoes because viewers rather expect poetry to be more meaningful, sad, romantic, while this form of poetry is to broadcast what writers appreciate in their given subject.

E) What could you improve on for next time?

To improve this analysis and poem, I believe asking for assistance mostly on the analysis would make my word choices better, improve my vocabulary and take out any unnecessary words.

2D Art Core Competency Self Assessment

Artifact:

This is a portfolio piece. Medium: Acrylic Paint

Core Competency: CommunicationCC

With the completion of this project, I demonstrated good communication throughout creating this painting. The main idea I wanted to get across when creating this piece, was getting my feelings across of feeling isolated, alone, and in a world with no one to rely on. I got my ideas across successfully. Something I wish for next time if I decide to recreate my piece, is to take a step back, and just obverse what I’m painting instead of just trying to get it done. With each paint stroke, I didn’t put specific thoughts behind why I was painting in a certain direction, or with a certain brush, I painted each stroke with a motion I was feeling, helping to communicate what is special about this piece to me personally.
