Comparative Cultures Mid-Term Assessment

Continuity and Change & Communication

In our project, “Egypt vs Mesopotamia: Ancient Literature”, I developed my ability to assess continuity and change. For my sample of the project, I was able to get an in-depth view of how Egyptian literature changed over time and which aspects remained constant. Drawing from this experience, I feel I am now more proficient in noticing aspects of continuity in more modern subjects and how the world has changed. Though I am confident in my ability to recognize these changes, I feel as though I could have elaborated more within the presentation itself. When adding the information to the slides, I felt as though I had left out a few crucial points of detail that truly would have expressed my thorough understanding of the topic. However, when asked to speak on it, I could most certainly deliver a speech on how Egyptian literature has developed over the years.

In this project, I mainly developed the core competency of communication. I was able to easily express my ideas in a group situation and take into account others’ preferences and opinions in order to make a project that would satisfy the ideals of all our group members. Though I may not have communicated with those outside of my own realm of research (those studying Mesopotamia), I was still able to reach out to them if need be to ask questions and collaborate effectively. I worked particularly well with the other person in our group that was researching Egypt, as we had a common goal and it was easier to understand each other when the overall concept is the same. Despite this, I feel as though we could have communicated more efficiently when it came to deciding what topics would be discussed when presenting the PowerPoint, as I feel as though there was a small multitude of facts I would have liked to discuss but were not brought up at any point in time. Had I relayed my thoughts back to my group, we likely would have covered them and had a slightly better presentation as a result.
