Curricular Competency Reflection

I chose careers like Child Psychologist, Social Worker and Psychiatrist because I’ve always wanted to help people, especially children, and I find the way our minds work really interesting. After looking into them, I found out that Child Psychology focuses more on emotions and development which I find stands out to me the most. I’m most interested in the Child Psychologist program at the University of Alberta, and the program for Social Work at University of Calgary is my “backup”. I’m not 100% ready yet but I would like to be. To prepare I’m planning to take a Psychology and Child Development class, stay on top of my schoolwork, try to volunteer more often than not, and keep looking into these careers.

Artifact

In this artifact, it shows my groups data table, it tells us the average time we had for each activity, the velocity, and the kinetic energy for each activity we did during the lab.

My roles in the lab were recorder and timer, which meant I recorded the times for the activities on the clipboard that was provided and tracked the times it took to complete each task. I feel that throughout this lab there was no leader or followers since I had the sheet and was in charge of the timing for activities, my group knew how to do the activities and we communicated well about what happened.

In this lab, my group was able to combine our different tasks to get everything done. We communicated who did what, and shared ideas with each other for how and who would/could do the activities we were assigned. Using this teamwork we were able to complete the tasks and record our information as well as solve our Energy Problems on the back using the information found.

Social Awareness/Responsibility (Work On)

“I find it easy to be part of a group”

During the lab, we were doing activities to find our average time, kinetic energy and velocity for different activities. Even though I found it to be part of a group, I sometimes try to do all the work by myself because I want to get things done faster. But I realized that working with a group does make things go faster opposed to working by myself. It makes everything go faster, more work don at once and people can each have their own parts of the project to do. To improve I can allow others to help me so I’m not working alone, that way things are done more efficiently and the end product is better.

I can understand and share basic information about topics and participate in conversations. I can work with others to achieve a short-term goal and do my share of the work. I can ask for help when needed and listen to others’ ideas with full attention. I helped with researching for our battle presentation and helped organize our information. I can also reflect on what went well and what I need to fix for next time, especially when I am working in a group.

During group and solo activities, when someone in my group is confused about the task at hand, I ask others in the group if they know the answer to what we’re confused about. If no one has a clear understanding then I ask the teacher what were supposed to be doing.

In class when the teacher is talking, I try to remember the parts of the conversation that seem the most important; this way, if I don’t remember everything that was said, I know the general idea so I know what to base my ideas on. I also take quick mental notes on key points to help my understanding later.

What was something you learned that you didnt know or consider before?

I didn’t consider how hard it would be to save someones life. Watching people give CPR on TV made it seem like it was such an easy task but when we started this unit I realized it takes a lot of work to do it.

What is a key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit? 

The biggest thing I’m going to takeaway is that when trying to save someones life using CPR you have to make sure you follow the steps. The steps include, Check for hazards, Call 911, Landmark the chest, Give compressions, Give 2 breaths. I learned its vital to remember that you have to check for hazards because if you don’t it can hurt you and the person you’re saving.

How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously?  

It connects because if your body isn’t healthy then you can have a higher chance of having a heart attack, angina, cardia arrest, etc. Its important to make sure your diet is healthy, and that you exercise regularly to maintain good health.

These can be seen when I work in group settings, when a group I’m in is confused on the task at hand I try to explain what were being asked of to the best of my knowledge. This helps both me display my knowledge of the topic and help me understand my groups point of view.

One of the ways I can see using this learning to help others is… 

If someone near me or someone else that knows CPR, is having a Heart Attack, Angina, Cardiac Arrest, etc. Either the other person or I would be able to give the person in need CPR and could save their lives. Its helpful that we know this incase we are ever in this position.

I can describe how learning about CPR relates to my life… 

This relates to my life because my family members are getting older and have the potential to be more at risk for health issues, and me having a knowledge of what to do in a situation that could arise is helpful. T

Math 10 Core Competency Assessment

I know that being distracted by myself and my peers during class can have positive and negative consequences. Including distracting myself from the lesson and making it harder for me to understand the work we are doing. I am going to plan to adjust my actions to make it easier for myself to understand by, paying more attention during the lessons and trying to ask my teacher, peers, and friends for help when I don’t understand the topic. If I become sad, angry, or frustrated, doing a math problem I will plan to ask people around me if they understand, if they can then I’ll ask them for help. If they do not then I will try to ask the teacher to help me understand the materials better. Because I know that my being distracted during class can harm my marks, my peers’ marks, and my overall understanding of the assignment I plan to make sure that I pay more attention during the lesson to help reduce any problems that could occur.

I show others that I value their opinions by asking my group what ideas everyone in my group has for the project. I find that this helps everyone’s ideas be added into the project in someway because we’ve all said things we wanted in the project so there is a compromise between the group that everyone else’s opinions are added.

When I need to work in a group of people I don’t know well, I try to talk to people inside the group to get to know at least some people in the group. For the most part I just stick to myself in those types of groups, I ask what my tasks are and then I try my best to complete them.

Somethings I think about before dividing tasks among the group members include asking my group how much they understand the project or subject, then deciding what they could do with the best of their understanding. I also consider how much they usually do in group projects, how much they are on task, how much they pay attention, etc.

Why is it important to remember who benefits from the advertisement when you view an advertisement?

It is important to remember because customers often think that they are benefitting from an ad, but it is the company making the ad that is benefitting because they are attracting people to come buy their product.

Choose one form of persuasion and explain why it is effective in persuading you/an audience:

A form of persuasion is emotional, this is effective because it influences people to buy a product because the company uses empathy to make someone empathize the person or people in the ad making them want to buy the product in order to help them.

Name calling because it influences people to buy a product because someone or something famous has and or uses that product.

Core Competency Reflection

One of the ways I ensured my group was clear on what we were doing was to give everyone specific tasks on what they were supposed to work on, we made it fair so everyone got roughly the same amount and wasn’t confused on what they were supposed to do.

When there was disagreement within the group, I found it helpful to ask the group why they were disagreeing and then resolve the problem by asking both people to say why they were upset and then solving the problem further from each of their reasonings.

When my group was not productive, we put down our phones and tried to move away from people that could distract us in order to get things moving in the right direction.

My First Year

This year I missed reaching goals in classes like Math, Science, and English. Some goals I had in these classes were that I wanted to try to pay more attention and do the best that I can in those classes. Some ways I missed my goals were that during class, I would spend time being distracted and not on task, or I would leave things to the last minute and get lazy to do them. These all are ways I missed my goals but, next year I aim to do better and pay more attention to the materials that I will need to know.

I make an effort to include missing voices/perception by asking people “What do you think of this?” and also by saying “We can do ________ to decide.”

I am clear on the difference between plain “group work” and collaboration is shown by when I include people and encourage them to embrace their thinking.
