A&P 12 Core Competency – Fetal Pig Dissection

Artifact:

This edublog will focus on the core competencies that I demonstrated during the Fetal Pig Dissection.

    Explanation:

Communication: My partner and I communicated perfectly as we did not face any major challenges during the fetal pig dissection. We clearly established our roles in the lab, where my lab partner was responsible for directly searching the pig’s insides, and I was helping with the identification and labelling for the parts of the pig. To make the lab flow smoothly, I considered what would work best for my partner. I would label and section the parts into where they would generally be located. For example, I knew the aorta, coronary arteries and the ventricles were all located in a similar area; thus, I gave those items to my partner so that we could complete a section for each interval. In addition, to optimize our dissection process, me and my partner communicated and used a flex so we could have more time to search for pig parts. Our excellent communication resulted in us being able to find all the fetal pig parts for the dissection.

Critical thinking: my partner and I were successfully able to use our critical thinking skills when facing difficult situations. When searching for specific pig parts, we came to an issue where there were parts that were not labelled on the supplemental diagram, or the white lab sheet. To tackle this issue, we studied parts of the word, and how it could signify its own location or meaning. An example is when we understood that “coronary” related to the heart, or like the parts, “duodenum”, “jejunum” and “ileum” had to do with the digestive areas, like the stomach/intestine area. Furthermore, we used our critical thinkings skills to make searching easier by completing all the easier-to-identify pig parts first, then finding the harder parts by process of elimination. Also, when the teacher would check our pig for correct locations, for the parts we got incorrect, we would analyze why we got it wrong, and go with the next optimal location. This lab required us to thoroughly use our critical thinking skills, and were able to demonstrated that through our results.
