Core Competency Goals

This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences:

I tend to have difficulties with this core competency because I do not know what word choices are fitting for specific assignments at times. For an example, in my English class I used the most basic words for an assignment because I thought it would be a good chose when having to read it to the class because I thought it will be easier for the listeners to understand. Then after I got feedback on the assignment, I was told that I should have used more powerful words. So, I feel like at times I could improve on knowing when to use more basic words and when to use more powerful words. I can achieve this goal by knowing what the assignment is and deciding what words to choose based on the assignment.

I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by:

I show my understanding of this by knowing when we are doing group activities such as a science lab, I had to do a few days ago. We were told to do group work to figure out one common goal all together and that common goal was to make a bouncy ball out of the materials and instructions that were given to our group. I learnt that what we did during the lab was group work because we needed to work as a group on the same thing to figure out one common goal together. In my opinion collaboration can be many different things. An example of when I used collaboration was when I had to do a Spanish bingo activity in my class. We were asked to go around and find people who can achieve these tasks that were given on our bingo worksheet. One of the questions on my worksheet was “find someone who knows what Hola means” then I had to walk around asking people this question, so I think that was an example of collaboration because I had to ask and work with someone to achieve a goal.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by:

I tend to show others that I value the effort and work that they contributed by telling them how great they did, and I also usually give them some feedback on how they might be able to make their work even better for next time. When I am working in a group or with anyone, I like to value that fact that it was not only me who put effort in, so I tend to show my appreciation to my group members by saying that they did an excellent job on their share, and I tend to incorporate their ideas into our work to show that I value their ideas and effort. I value all their contributions but if I am not fully satisfied with something they have done, I will share my feelings in a polite and kind way so we can make changes and come to an agreement within the situation.

Arts and Crafts Core Competency Self-Assessment

Artifacts:

Up above is a crochet shirt I designed and made. I am most proud of this assignment because it is very different and unique. I think that this assignment made me use a lot of thinking skills because I had to first come up with a plan of what I want to make. Then I had to do a few other steps before making the actual project and last I got to make the project. I feel that the part that took the most thinking skills was the tie dying part. The tie dying part was the hardest because their were not many instructions on how to do that since it isn’t very common. So I think that experimenting on how to tie dye the wool shirt I made used the most thinking skills.

Explanation:

During this project I used more thinking skills by generating new ideas. An example of when I generated new ideas was when I was trying to come up with a unique crochet shirt design. Some other ways of how I used creative thinking was when I got inspired by other peoples ideas and turned their ideas into other ideas of my own. I also used Pinterest to generate some more inspiration.

Meatballs and Garlic Bread

Making and Sharing Reflection

During making this meal I used the skill “minimizing food waste.” I did this by using the left over garlic bread and meatball to form this meal above. We were supposed to take a photo of all the meatballs and garlic bread in our skillet but my group did not have enough room in the pan to put the leftover bread in so I came up with the idea to serve the meatball in the garlic bread. During sharing this meal I used the skill “Deciding how and with who I will share this meal with.” I did this by making sure there was a clean table spot that was ready for my group members to eat at. I also did this sharing skill by making sure their was enough food for everyone in my group.

Core Competency Reflection

As an active listener I noticed that I am able to cook better because I always listen to everything the teacher says during demos and instruction times. Being an active listener helps me to be able to work better with my group and peers.

While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extended I understanding by explaining my knowledge of cooking and mostly baking. I did this by explaining tips and tricks and stuff I know about backing to my group and peers. For an example, my group did not know how to put together an icing bag so instead of doing for them i showed them how to do it. I also told my group to put the icing bag over a cup so the icing will go in better.

I know my group is working well when I hear/see collaboration. When I see my group working together I know they re working as a team which is usually the key to success. I also k now that my group is working well when I hear them communicating with each other.

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to ask if their is anything they did no understand. I need to also improve on telling my group when I do not understand something instead of being shy and embarrassed for not understanding simple instructions. I can also improve on my communication skills by not letting English skills and barriers get in the way. For an example if I or another student doesn’t understand something I can improve on trying to make the communication work. I can possibly achieve this goal by using google translate or another form of communication to get the message through to others or from others to myself.

ENGLISH 9 EDUBLOG FINAL REFLECTION

What did you learn during this assignment or task and how did you grow in your reading, listening, or viewing skills?

I learned how to use new words to make my persuasive speech more enjoyable. I also learned how to write a good speech. Some ways I improved on my reading was by when I learned deeply about word structure such as the difference between prefix and suffix in words to increase my vocabulary when we were doing the book reports. I improved in my listening by focusing and listening to others presentations.

What did you learn during this assignment or task and how did you grow in your writing, speaking, or representing skills?

I learned that writing a proper speech takes a lot of time and has to be done in certain steps to achieve a overall good speech. I learnt new writing skills when I was making this speech because I learnt that I need to write a hook for my speech. I leant how to pronounce a few new words when doing my speech voice over.

Skills I grew in

I improved in my communication skills because I had to share my presentation with all the people in my class.

I need improvement on

I can get better at reflecting on my thinking because I do not use this skill a lot and I feel like this would be a great area to improve in.

From Scratch The Movie

My Movie

Plot, Character, Setting, Mood

I learnt that you must put thoughts and evidence from the book together, In order to figure out what your character might look like or act like. In the book their was not a lot of information about what my character looked like. I had to assume what my character looked like based off of other information like her job and her personal life choices. For an example in my book Lucy stated that she does not wear a lot of makeup, so based off of that I assumed what her face might look like. I also had to assume what my characters age was. Lucy in the book said she worked in Diana’s bakery for over twenty years, based off of that information I knew that Lucy must be older that twenty. For choosing my plot points I thought of the key scenes and important information that people would need to know about. For an example I wrote a significant scene from the beginning of my book and a few from the middle and the end as well. Because Lucy worked in a bakery I assumed the main setting would be the bakery. To me the word mood means what you feel from watching the movie. I think the mood of my book was happy because most people in the book acted like they were happy. I picked the song I picked because it seemed to match the happy, chill kind of vibe of my book. This is why I chose that song.

Core Competency Reflection

  • This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audience. I did this by reading my book over again and writing down powerful words as well as significant words in my book.
  • Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in my voice over. I used a clear voice to communicate the story and plot of my book to others.
  • In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by suggesting cool deigns that could be used in peoples PowerPoint movie. I also shared my thoughts and opinions with the class in some discussions as well.
  • My goal: I use evidence to make judgements or decisions. I think I need to improve on this because I did not include much evidence on where I got my thoughts from.

Creative Thinking Skills

This is my paper quelling project.

I demonstrated my creative thinking skills by making sure I had a proper plan of what i wanted to make. I also demonstrated these skills by making a producted that is out of the box. Though this project I showcased my creativity skills and I can form new ideas to create new things.

A Healthy Bowl Of Hash

(Home Lab) Rating *****

Making and Sharing Reflection

Making:

When making this recipe I used lots of ingredients. I put spinach in this hash and I had left overs so I diced it up to make a garnish. This recipe had a little bit of left over filling, So instead of wasting it I filled up the three bowls more. During the process of making this recipe I used a lot of vegetables, I only needed half of some veggies like the pepper and onion. I saved these ingredients for another recipe I created.

Sharing:

When making this recipes I diced to make them for my family. I picked a day to make dinner for my mom, dad and myself. I made this meal alone with my Dads supervision. This is one reason why I gave this meal to my dad to try. I shared this meal with my mom because she usually makes dinner for me, So I thought it would be a nice break for her. Then I chose to let myself have one of these bowls since I was the one who made it I had to try it.

Core Competency Reflection

Collaboration:

I show others that I truly value their contributions by taking peoples opinions and ideas into consideration. For an example I cut up the spinach because my dad thought it would taste better.

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I introduce myself and engage in a general conversations.

Communication:

As an active listener, I notice that I can understand and respect peoples opinions and thoughts about my food. For an example my dad loved the dish but thought it needed more pepper, I respected his thought.

The way I communicate while cooking differs from when I communicate at sports. When I am cooking I communicate a plan to myself or my peers when working in a group.

My Goal

One thing I think I need to improve on is communicating when our group is not productive and figuring out why we are not productive at times. I am working on this goal because it is an important skill to have when working with others.
