I can identify my strengths and limits by always trying my best and completing my work to my fullest. I can find internal motivation by always asking for help when I need it and by continuing to challenge myself. I can act on opportunities for self-growth by practicing work that is difficult to me. Science 10 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Artifact:

Communication. During this lab I learned that working together and communication was key. In this lab we were asked to keep one can hot and one can cold. We were aloud to use diffrent materials to achieve these goals. We were paired into groups of three or four and were asked to work together. Diffrent skills and techniques where needed to make this lab have effective results, so the more we worked together to generate ideas the more ideas and techniques we would have.

Reflection:

In this lab I used communication skills by talking to my group and sharing ideas. We thought by coming up with ideas together we would get more ideas that would work. In the end we decided to use snow from outside to keep the cold can cold. Then my group and I were wondering how we can warm up the hot can. We thought about using a blow dryer and a heat lamp but that was taking a while, so we decided to use hot water instead. The hot water made a bit of a success rate, but the cold can more. We noticed that the ice/snow from outside was really working, so we continued using that technique. I noticed that I used communication skills in maybe ways while doing this lab and I hope to continue that while doing future labs.

My Reflection:

  • Creative Thinking: My group and I used creative thinking when writing this script. We used creative thinking to come up with topic ideas, word phrases and more. Our creative thinking skills were able to make our spanish skit easier as we did apply words and things that we already learnt in spanish class to this skit.
  • Collaboration: While doing this spanish skit my group and I used collaboration by thinking together in a group and by listening to each others ideas. My group and I also came up with ideas together.
  • Communication: We used communication by talking and sharing our ideas in a group. We also communicated by sharing and listening to each other. My group and I will also be using communication when performing this spanish skit in front of the whole class.
  • Critical and Reflective Thinking: My group and I were proud of our mark and that all our effort has paid off. After showing appreciation, my group and I thought of ways we can improve, such as reading over the rubric before handing it in.

CPR Reflection:

  1. What was something you learned that you didn’t know or consider before? Something I learnt in gym was CPR. I learnt that there was an old way and a new way of doing CPR. I also learnt the skills and information on when to do CPR. I was able to grow my knowledge in strokes and heart attacks as well. Some other things I learnt was what an AED is.
  1. What is a key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit? From the Practical CPR unit some take aways for me were the fact that you must push as deep as a key on the persons chest. I also learnt that you are supposed to use an AED to try, and kick start the persons heart again. Some things that I leaned in the theory unit were the signs of a stroke and the signs of a heart attack. I learnt that the symptoms are similar in some areas for strokes but also diffrent then a heart attack symptom in other areas. I think that the biggest take away was the fact that a stroke and heart attack can possibly happen to anyone, anytime.
  1. How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously? Nutrition and CPR unit correspond, In CPR I learnt that a healthy meal keeps your muscles and organs running properly. During CPR we even learnt about obesity because this can affect your heart. I leant that being overweight is unhealthy because a person’s heart must work harder but not in a safe way. I also learnt that working out and gaining weight through muscles is good for your heart because it keeps it pumping blood and words your organs and muscles in your body. We also learnt that people’s food choices can put them at higher or lower risks for strokes and heart attacks. Heart attacks can be more likely to happen if you have higher cholesterol or are overweight.

Core Competency Reflection:

I advocate for myself: I can advocate for myself when I do not understand something. I ask questions and get the support I need. For an example I was not fully understanding a question on our theory CPR work, So I asked for help.

I make choices that keep me safe in my community and online: When practicing CPR and walking to the classroom to do CPR I made good choices like being responsible and not fooling around in class and on the roads. I also sometimes help others stay on task as well.

I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals: I care about feedback and can take feedback from my teacher when doing CPR. An example of when I did this was when I was doing the practical test on CPR, and I did good at walking around the body and becoming aware of the situation the happened. My feed back was to try and drive my weight forwards and use my shoulders to be able to push more weight onto the body. I cared about this feedback, and I took it to help me improve for the next time I was doing CPR.

I can stand for my learning and tell how it connects to my experiences: I can think of my experiences to help me relate to what I’m learning in CPR. For an example while learning about strokes and heart attacks I related this to symptoms that one of my loved ones has experiences. I learnt why this could happen and what was a possible symptom that made this happen. This helped me understand the difference between a stroke and a heart attack beacuse a few weeks before I did not really know the difference. I was also able to figure out what kind of happened to my loved ones.

A goal I have for myself is to respond to questions more often in class. I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. I am reflecting on this goal beacuse at times I felt like I did not communicate and contribute a lot when responding to class questions. To achieve this goal, I will try to communicate more and respond to more questions in class to show that I have a true understanding and care for my learning education, If I am already not showing this as much as I think I am.

Explain what you see as the greatest strength in this paragraph. In other words what does this paragraph do well and why?

I think that this paragraph includes smooth topic sentences and a great concluding sentence because I feel like it attracts the attention of the readers. In Those two sentences I added interesting details to grab the readers attention. These two sentences added the most important part of the paragraph because it describes what I was writing about. The concluding sentence also wraps all thoughts up very smoothly which is great. So therefor I think I did this very well out of this paragraph.

Core Competency Self-Assessment:

How did you act on the feedback from your first literary paragraph in writing this one?

When I received my feedback for the first time, I was happy, but I wanted to improve my mark. I saw that there were few things that I needed to work on such as fragment sentences, spelling, and minor other things. So, when I got another opportunity to write another paragraph, I was prepared to make myself more aware of the changes I needed to make. I used spell check, got extra support from my teacher while writing my second paragraph, and I even got a fair understanding on fragment sentences. So, this helped improve my mark which I was happy about. All though there are trivial things I do still need improvement in.

Core Competency Goals 

This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences:

I tend to have difficulties with this core competency because I do not know what word choices are fitting for specific assignments at times. For an example, in my English class I used the most basic words for an assignment because I thought it would be a good chose when having to read it to the class because I thought it will be easier for the listeners to understand. Then after I got feedback on the assignment, I was told that I should have used more powerful words. So, I feel like at times I could improve on knowing when to use more basic words and when to use more powerful words. I can achieve this goal by knowing what the assignment is and deciding what words to choose based on the assignment.  

I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by:

I show my understanding of this by knowing when we are doing group activities such as a science lab, I had to do a few days ago. We were told to do group work to figure out one common goal all together and that common goal was to make a bouncy ball out of the materials and instructions that were given to our group. I learnt that what we did during the lab was group work because we needed to work as a group on the same thing to figure out one common goal together. In my opinion collaboration can be many different things. An example of when I used collaboration was when I had to do a Spanish bingo activity in my class. We were asked to go around and find people who can achieve these tasks that were given on our bingo worksheet. One of the questions on my worksheet was “find someone who knows what Hola means” then I had to walk around asking people this question, so I think that was an example of collaboration because I had to ask and work with someone to achieve a goal.  

I show others that I truly value their contributions by:

I tend to show others that I value the effort and work that they contributed by telling them how great they did, and I also usually give them some feedback on how they might be able to make their work even better for next time. When I am working in a group or with anyone, I like to value that fact that it was not only me who put effort in, so I tend to show my appreciation to my group members by saying that they did an excellent job on their share, and I tend to incorporate their ideas into our work to show that I value their ideas and effort. I value all their contributions but if I am not fully satisfied with something they have done, I will share my feelings in a polite and kind way so we can make changes and come to an agreement within the situation. 

Arts and Crafts Core Competency Self-Assessment

Up above is a crochet shirt I designed and made. I am most proud of this assignment because it is very different and unique. I think that this assignment made me use a lot of thinking skills because I had to first come up with a plan of what I want to make. Then I had to do a few other steps before making the actual project and last I got to make the project. I feel that the part that took the most thinking skills was the tie dying part. The tie dying part was the hardest because their were not many instructions on how to do that since it isn’t very common. So I think that experimenting on how to tie dye the wool shirt I made used the most thinking skills.

Explanation:

During this project I used more thinking skills by generating new ideas. An example of when I generated new ideas was when I was trying to come up with a unique crochet shirt design. Some other ways of how I used creative thinking was when I got inspired by other peoples ideas and turned their ideas into other ideas of my own. I also used Pinterest to generate some more inspiration.

Meatballs and Garlic Bread

Making and Sharing Reflection

During making this meal I used the skill “minimizing food waste.” I did this by using the left over garlic bread and meatball to form this meal above. We were supposed to take a photo of all the meatballs and garlic bread in our skillet but my group did not have enough room in the pan to put the leftover bread in so I came up with the idea to serve the meatball in the garlic bread. During sharing this meal I used the skill “Deciding how and with who I will share this meal with.” I did this by making sure there was a clean table spot that was ready for my group members to eat at. I also did this sharing skill by making sure their was enough food for everyone in my group.

Core Competency Reflection

As an active listener I noticed that I am able to cook better because I always listen to everything the teacher says during demos and instruction times. Being an active listener helps me to be able to work better with my group and peers.

While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extended I understanding by explaining my knowledge of cooking and mostly baking. I did this by explaining tips and tricks and stuff I know about backing to my group and peers. For an example, my group did not know how to put together an icing bag so instead of doing for them i showed them how to do it. I also told my group to put the icing bag over a cup so the icing will go in better.

I know my group is working well when I hear/see collaboration. When I see my group working together I know they re working as a team which is usually the key to success. I also k now that my group is working well when I hear them communicating with each other.

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to ask if their is anything they did no understand. I need to also improve on telling my group when I do not understand something instead of being shy and embarrassed for not understanding simple instructions. I can also improve on my communication skills by not letting English skills and barriers get in the way. For an example if I or another student doesn’t understand something I can improve on trying to make the communication work. I can possibly achieve this goal by using google translate or another form of communication to get the message through to others or from others to myself.
