Pig Dissection Lab Core Competency Reflection

Above is a photo of the Fetal Pig Dissection in the lab I did in Anatomy & Physiology 12

Communication Core Competency

I demonstrated this core competency by communicating with my partner during this lab. I can take on roles and responsibilities, in a group by doing my share. My partner and I communicated before the lab to prepare because we had circumstances that could affect our progress in the lab. During this lab, both my partner and I had to take care of RealCare babies for 3 days which overlapped with our lab. We talked over what we would do under different kinds of situations that could affect our learning due to the babies and came up with a solution by agreeing to have one person focus on the dissection while the other stepped out of the room to take care of the babies if they cried, and explain what each person missed when they came back. We would switch each time the baby cried so we both got to experience the lab. Although we were a little behind at some point, we made up for it by coming into flex and cent times so catch up. In the end we both got to learn and enjoy the lab despite our circumstances.

During the labelling of the fetal pigs body parts, we agreed that on the first day one of us would look for where the parts are and the other would pin the parts. The next day we switched roles. In the past, communication skills was something that I needed to build, and I have been working on it and now I realise how important it is because without communication with my partner, I would have struggled on how to move forward during this lab.

Titration Lab

Curricular Competency Explanation

  1. A Titration is a lab technique used to find the concentration of a substance in a solution.
  2. In this lab, a titration was used to discover the unknown concentration of a substance with Sodium Hydroxide.
  3. The endpoint in titration is the point where the indicator changes color. When the color changes, that mean that the reaction is complete. (The moles of the titrant should be equal to the moles of the substance being analyzed.)
  4. I know that I have reached the endpoint of the titration when the substance changed color,. The goal was to find a very light pink color that stayed for at least 30 seconds, once the color stayed for 30 seconds, I knew that we had reached the endpoint.

Core Competency Reflection

Communication

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

I work with my partner to figure out how to find answers to the objectives using the information that we learned in class, or using the textbooks. If we are both confused we usually ask for help so that we can get a better understanding on how to move forward.

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by…

I like to ask questions and re-read over lab instructions to ensure that I don’t make things difficult for my surroundings and the people around me so that we can do things correctly and not waste any time.

Collaboration

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…

I knew that my partner and I were working well together when we started to work on the trials quicker each time. By the fourth trial, we sped through and were confident that we knew what we were doing.

Accounting 11 Core Competency

Creative Thinking

When faced with ambiguity or setbacks, I… to advance the development of my ideas.

When I am faced with a problem or setback, I ask my surrounding for help usually. If that is not an option, I like to use my imagination and try different options to solve the problem until I find one that works. It is not the best strategy, but it helps me understand things better in my own way.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…

When I am distracted, trying to get straight back into work does not help me because usually I find my mind wandering off anyways. So, to get back on track I like to take a little mind break for a few minutes because it helps me reset my mind before getting back on track.

Favorite Recipe

Cilantro Lime Honey Chicken + Black Bean Burrito Bowl

Making and Sharing Reflection

This recipe required a lot of different steps and recipes combined together. This recipe actually took two day to make. The Spanish Rice and Black beans that we used in the bowl was made the day before, and the Cilantro Lime Honey Chicken was left marinating in the fridge until the next day. On day two my partner and I cut up tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos, and grated the cheese. We also made homemade tortilla chips that we baked in the oven until they were solid. We reheated the beans and grilled the chicken, then assembled the bowl all together, and topped it off with sour cream and cilantro.

We had another option while making this dish, the other was to make a burrito. We discussed and decided that we wanted to make the bowl instead because we were ahead of time and had enough time to make the chips. I had an image in my head on how the bowl would turn out, and the result carried my expectations.

My partner and I planned different tasks to do so that we all put our attention to the food we were assigned to eat. We worked well together to make a visually appealing and tasty dish.

Core Competency Reflection

  1. My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

I read over the instructions on the recipe and write down tools and devices I will need to use in the kitchen. When it is time to start cooking, I like to have every tool set out in front of me so that I can see what to use and keep the workplace tidy before starting to grab ingredients.

2. One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to…

I try to initiate conversations and group discussions to decide on what steps to divide to ensure that everybody knows what they are going to work on. This also helps break the ice between my partner and I so that we can work, and not be hesitant to ask each other things while we work together.

3. I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…

When the group comfortably has conversations with each other, and help each other out with tasks without being asked to. It is a kind gesture that I appreciate so I try to do it too.

4. A goal I have for myself moving forward, and something that I want to improve is…

Manage my time better and create a work schedule to complete my work. I think that I can be more focused in a quiet environment like a cafe or library. I often hand in my work late and fall behind because of it, so I think changing the way I work will affect my work habits positively.

Reflection on my learning in Marketing and promotion 11 Course

Curricular Competency Reflection

I thought about things that I like (Red Bull, SpongeBob, Wendy’s, Basketball) and thought of a way to bring them together, promoting it in a way that I would influence myself to buy the products. We looked for the images on the internet, when it came to photoshop, we decided to use Adobe. I decided to work on this with Mai and Aysha because they both have similar interests as me. It was easy to decide what and how we wanted to promote. Working together went very smoothly. Originally, we had no idea how to use Adobe. We were stuck on figuring how to edit the poster with our limited tools. Then, we looked up YouTube videos and explored the app to learn how it works. We learned how to brainstorm our ideas and make an image look appealing, so that it attracts consumers.

Core Competency Reflection

I know the group is working well together when I see all members taking initiative to solve a problem and speak up to include their ideas. When everyone is involved, you see satisfying and quicker results. That is how my partners and I were during this assignment.

I used to think working together is a distraction, and now I know it’s not because I was very focused and determined during this project. I was very serious and wasted no time. My group was the same. We all included our input and were satisfied with the outcome of our work.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I go outside the class. I usually go for a walk to relax my brain and cool down. It relieves my stress and reminds me that I need to get back to work.

Active Health Unit Core Competency Reflection

Daily Lifestyle Tracker

I think that I excel at staying hydrated. Usually, I drink about 2-3 of my 1 litre water bottle. Back when I did the lifestyle tracker I would drink 3-5 of my smaller water bottle. I always keep my water bottle by my side, in case I get thirsty.

I want to add my exercise into my life. I haven’t been going to the gym as often as I used to, my goal is to go to the gym at least 3 times a week. I wish to improve my stamina, and take care of my body more. I want to be able to visibly see my gym progress.

The Core Competency I demonstrated was Communication. I communicated with the people around me when I needed to ask questions about what we were working on. If I was confused I asked my surroundings, if they didn’t know I would have asked Ms. Purdey. I also helped my classmates if I knew something and they didn’t, for example the Oreo page in the package, I helped my classmate by explaining the instructions.

Positive Social Media

Positive Social Media Posts

Reflection

There are many ways that having a public digital footprint can benefit you. For example, you are able to promote yourself and potentially become well-known for a good cause. You can gain supporters and if you are successful enough, and people like you, you might be able to start a career with your social media account. Then if you become famous, you will receive brand deals and be asked to promote other peoples’ brands too. You may also get a chance to collaborate with someone else on that social media platform you are active on, and gain more and more supporters while you are building your account and career.

Those are some benefits, but there are also some risks to having a public social media account. An example would be if you were to accidentally post something, or post something and it was unintentionally offensive, there is nothing you can do from stopping people from hating on you. When you are on social media, you have to be extra careful what you post and do your research always. Because one little mistake can lead to the downfall of your career.

A benefit to a private social media account is that you don’t ever have to worry about accidentally posting something offensive and getting hate for it. Having a private social media is just to make you happy and it shouldn’t matter what you post because nobody that you don’t want seeing will see it. You don’t have to worry about losing your career because your co-workers and employers won’t be able to see what you post either. You wont have to worry about your reputation being stained.

Core Competency Reflection

  • I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. At first I had no idea what the “artefact” I was supposed to use was. I emailed my teacher and she gave me an in-class explanation which helped me a lot.
  • I can work to inform myself about issues surrounding me. Right now, this assignment is teaching me about the issues about having a public digital footprint. I am learning how to protect my online image and it has been very useful. I am using the knowledge about online safety I learned about in class and applying it into my everyday life.
  • I can be kind to others, and support others when they need it. While working on this in class, one of my classmates had asked me a question on how to do something on this assignment. I knew how to help so I answered that classmate’s question and she was able to get an answer and move on with her work.
  • I can reflect on my thinking. While doing my paragraph I did a lot of reflecting on my thinking. I was analyzing and reading over my paragraph and fixing it to make sure I was really writing what I thought. I was using my personal opinion to explain what I thought was risky and beneficial to having a public or personal digital footprint.

My Goal For The Future

“I can demonstrate respectful, inclusive behaviour.” Although this assignment was an individual kind of assignment, I know in the the future I may be part of a group assignment. Usually I struggle with including and talking to people I am unfamiliar with or just am not close to. I instead just sit and stay quiet. I do think it could be a bit rude to the other person, but really I don’t intend to make it seem that way. Next time, when I am part of a group assignment, I am going to take the initiative to talk to my partner(s) first. That is my goal. I’ll start with introducing myself if we don’t know each other’s name to make it a bit easier.

Core Competency Self Assessment

Creative Thinking

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others.”

My Artifact: Cell Cycle Stop-Motion Video

This Stop-Motion video shows what happens inside the nucleus of the cell during mitosis (Metaphase & Anaphase). It took me around 8 hours to complete the video because I did it in two separate days.

From the beginning I decided to do this with paper, but unexpectedly it was harder and took longer than I thought. It took a long time to cut out all the parts I needed for the inside of the cell as well.

Before I started to put together my video, I went on YouTube to find some examples of cell cycle stop motion video, to get an idea of on what materials to use, but all of them were clay or some type of material that I didn’t have in my house. I Eventually I found a video using paper for the nucleus and cell, but the rest was string and buttons, and I didn’t have those. I just decided to use paper and cut the rest of the parts that I needed.

A skill I learned was how to use stop motion. It was my first time using it, so I looked up videos on YouTube to find out how it works. I was confused at first, but I got the hang of it later. If I ever need to use stop motion again, I will try to get a better set up because my phone moved a lot, and you could see my shadow/reflection on the table throughout the whole video.

Core Competency Reflection

  1. I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. I demonstrated this by splitting the work evenly between my partner and I and completing them. (Collaborating)

2. I demonstrate inclusive behaviour. I showed this when I constantly asked my partner her thoughts on what we could do to improve our project. I asked if she had any ideas or suggestions on what we could or add on ir change. (social awareness and responsibility)

3. I can reflect on my thinking. I ended up taking a lot of time on my share when we were putting the project together because I kept going back to rewrite things after re-reading multiple times and try to change the way I write or what I should or shouldn’t add. (critical and reflective thinking)

I can tell the difference between facts and opinions. When doing research I stumbled upon many different answers to some of the same questions. There are many sites that share multiples peoples’ opinions and answers to a specific question. I needed an answer but I couldn’t tell what the real one was becaude of people’s different opinions. That made me want to dig more and find out what the truth is.(Critical & Reflective thinking)

To Improve:

I find it easy to be part if a group (Social awareness and responsibility)

I actually find it difficult to be in a group because there are times when there are disagreements and bad teamwork between partners. I find it very hard when there is poor teamwork in a group because it can affect how long it will take to finish and affect everyone’s marks even if it’s just because one person has their own opinion an refuses to work together and disagrees with something, or only one person does work and the others are slacking off.

I don’t like when this happens but i am also bad at standing up and trying to fix it. I want to be able to demonstrate great teamwork when I am in a group. My goal is to hear everyones ideas and speak up when I have something to add on or suggest how someone else’s idea can be improved if I know that it can be. I want to talk freely and comfortably with the people in my group so that we can get work done on time and without any issues.
