Curricular Competency Reflection
A. In Empire of Wild, the Indigenous communities were marginalized and forced away from their main lands and into small patches, one of them being Arcand. This is a reference to an issue that the First Peoples faced in the past and still face today; colonizers assimilate and steal from the Indigenous.
In The Marrow Thieves, the indigenous communities are hunted for their bones. In the past, Indigenous people were commonly used for the advantages of colonizers. The book also references residential schools, which is interesting because the story takes place in the future and residential schools were abolished in the past. This may allude that residential schools or systems similar to it will make a return.
B. What I take away from both books is that there are lots of issues prevalent in today’s society. When people reference Indigenous communities, they reference past issues as if they are only for the past, but a lot of these problems are still in motion today. We see this in Empire of Wild when the First Peoples get referred to as “Indians” by a lot of the Canadian people in the story.
C. It is important to read about the authors to see what perspective they hold on certain matters. For example, the author Cherie Dimaline, the person who wrote both books, identifies as Metis, and so she writes her protagonists as Metis origin with specific Metis traditions, such as the Rogarou and salt bones for protection.
D. I would recommend Empire of Wild to an older audience who are able to handle graphic contents in the book. The book has several themes and the main theme is up for interpretation by the reader.
I would recommend The Marrow Thieves to any audience. The book has a very interesting and unique storyline, and has many thrilling moments. The plot has deeper meanings for underlying issues, and so the main theme may be tricky for some readers to interpret. Nonetheless, it is a great read.
Core Competency Reflection
This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences:
In journal entry 2, 3, and 4, I used Ai generated photos to depict certain characters and scenes. This help make an impact in my journals. When discussing about a certain character, the readers may look at the images crafted for those characters and help better understand or connect to the journals.
An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is during the circle discussions talking about our sub-themes, we discussed “Identity” and how it plays a role in our novels. I often built upon my peers discussing the same topic, either to elaborate a point or add on to it. This was evident in our discussion, when a peer mentioned assimilation and I added on to it by mentioning specific moments in The Marrow Thieves that reference that point.
