Curricular Competency Explanation

Titration is the method of slowly adding a known solution of a known concentration, commonly through the means of a buret, into a known volume of a known solution in order to find its concentration. The solution in the buret is referred to as the titrant, and is added until the solution of the unknown concentration, the titrate, neutralizes, often indicated by a colour change.

In lab 20C, hydrochloric acid (HCl) of an unknown concentration was titrated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to find its molarity.

The end point or the equivalence point is the point in which the titrate and the titrant’s concentration become equivalent. The endpoint signifies the completion of the titration by a change in the colour or intensity of the solution.

The end point of a titration is when the titrate changes colour due to the indicator placed in it to signify that it has reached neutralization. In our lab, the HCl turned a light pink colour due to the phenolphthalein indicator when the NaOH was added on. Below is a picture of the solution fully titrated.

The lab resulted in 11.85mL ± 1.7% of the average volume used to titrate the acid.

Communication is necessary in order for the labs to go as mistake-free as possible. To be able to communicate with a lab partner to ensure that the lab is being done accordingly, tasks are being distributed equally, and experiments are handled safely, accurately, and within the time limit. Through communication, the combined effort results to the lab being done successfully, as well as through critique and encouragement.
