Scale Factor Project Reflection

Core Competency Reflection

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I… Put on some music while I do the work.

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is… How to easily figure out where to place a dot when the scale has changed.

An area of study in which I feel confident to regularly challenge assumptions and develop new ideas in is… Scaling up and down now.

A goal I have for myself is… Finding one strategy that stimulates my imagination in projects like this one. I am working on this goal because I lack creativity on some things. I will achieve this goal by trying to be more imaginative.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

Was the French Revolution justifiable?: I believe the French Revolution was justifiable because it’s unfair to make only one estate (the poorer estate) pay for taxes while the others do not. The king was not doing anything about it and was not making the best decisions, so the 3rd estate had good reason to be upset and start the French Revolution. They fought for their rights, which is fair.

I can analyze evidence to make judgments: I gathered my evidence from paying attention to the classes we’ve had on the French Revolution. I’ve answered the question based on my own beliefs from what I’ve learned.

During socials this year I can say that I’ve learned a lot that I did not know before, and I’d like to continue learning all the things I do not know.

R2 – ようかい

Kodama – Tree Spirit

I decided to choose this Yokai because it looked cute and I like trees. These souls wander outside of their hosts, tending to their grove, and maintaining the balance of nature. The first known mention of the tree spirits is in Japan’s oldest known book, the Kojiki. The book talks about the tree god named Wakunochi-no-kami. Wakunochi-no-kami was the second born of the godling brood of Izanagi and Izanami. I do think that Yokai differ from normal western monsters and mythical creatures because unlike normal western monsters and mythical creatures, Yokai are spirits and they have a different vibe. In a way I don’t believe in Yokai, monsters, ghosts, and mythical creatures, but in a way I do believe in them because I believe that somewhere on a different planet in a different galaxy they may exist, just not here. The closest we might get to monsters are lab made creatures.

R1 – Independent Children

When it comes to doing chores I don’t really do them unless I’m asked to or if I want to, so there’s not really a set routine for me. Because of that, I don’t really know what age I started doing them. I think that children should grow up with the independence that Japanese children have, as long as it is safe. I think this because children will have to learn to do it eventually and it’s more time saved for parents to do other things. I first started to go to school by myself in grade 5 where I walked, but I only first used transit on my own to get to school in grade 6. It’s good to know how to get places on your own and starting at an earlier age doesn’t hurt as long as the route is safe enough.

Why Japanese?

Inspiration

While part of the reason I took Japanese was due to Spanish being full, I’ve always found Japanese an interesting language and I believe it should be fun to learn. Sometimes I do like a challenge, and while learning any new language is a challenge, Japanese seems like it could be harder in certain aspects. It can also be useful for future events and it’s always nice to know an extra language.

Goal

Some colleges and universities require a few years of a different language, so learning Japanese is useful for that. I think knowing Japanese could also be useful if I went to somewhere where it is spoken, or watching shows/movies that are in Japanese.

Motivation

To keep myself motivated to complete the course, I will think about college and university. I will also think about how it would be nice to know what others who speak Japanese are saying. If I am struggling I could get some help from my teacher or watch some videos that may help.

Core Competency Goals

  • A strategy I plan to use to stimulate my imagination is taking risks- I enjoy doing things like art and writing, but sometimes my imagination runs blank. Something I hope to do in the future to stimulate my imagination is doing some of the riskier ideas I have that I normally try to avoid.
  • When I’m sad, angry, or frustrated, a way I hope I can be more productive or calm is to do work or read- Sometimes during school or at home I can get in a bad mood, and that makes me lose focus. Usually I just try to let it go away on its own, but that causes me to lose valuable time to be productive. A way I plan to try to put myself in a better mood is distracting myself with reading or working, as it might make me forget about whatever was putting me in a bad mood in the first place.
  • I learn best when I ask questions about my work- During class I can be afraid to ask for help, but this year I hope to try to be more brave and ask more questions, as it helps me understand the subject better and do better work.
